I've been thinking about this idea for awhile - a Half-Life series or movie based off the Seven Hour War.

As a series, it would be around 7 to 10 episodes detailing the Combine invasion. I'm thinking seven episodes out of the series would take place in "real time" where we would see characters fighting and surviving the extradimensional invasion.

Outside the seven episodes, it would set up any kind of drama, character development, preparation, the aftermath, etc.

If this were a film, it would obviously would not be in real time. However, as a film it could "raise the bar" being more than just an average film. For instance, include "4D" effects such as motion, smell, fog and lighting effects, etc.

A lot of interesting things could happen and most of all, we'd get to see how the invasion played out and how the Combine beat our asses down in seven hours.

Personally I like the idea more for a series but a film with "4D" effects would be a lot of fun as well.

I know there's fan films and some of them are very well done such as this.

I can easily imagine an official series or film backed by Valve actually turning out to be really good and nothing something mediocre like Halo: Forward Unto Dawn or even worse, that utter bore that was Halo: Nightfall.

They'd ruin it. I want Hollywood as far away from properties I care about as possible.
That's my take on most things. Have yet to see an instance where Hollywood has made any property "better". But gun to my head movie vs series? Movie every time. At least then there is a chance for meaningful story arc. With a series its just senseless cliff hangers, viewer feedback based changes and attempts to get renewed. Basically its the worst of all worlds.

If they cannot rub those brain cells together fast enough to have an original idea... they probably should not attempt making a film.

The Tv Series Colony was kind of tapping into HL2 territory. Unfortunately the painfully slow pace of the first season kind of killed it in terms of traction and much like Half-life it ended on a Cliffhanger when it got cancelled, though it did make it to Season 3. They actually filmed the final season in Seattle ironically and albeit I've never been able to confirm whether it was him I'm sure Gaben makes a brief cameo queuing up at some refugee camp scene (it sure looked like him). Trailer below for the show season 1: -

I kind of dug it and thought it was a pity it got cancelled, but it is what it is.

I did always think a story exploring the 7 Hour War and Combine invasion was warranted because going from Half Life 1 to Half Life 2 can be pretty jarring story and narrative wise.

In Half Life 1, I was just some guy trying to survive an alien invasion, murdering a bunch of my own countrymen in the process (and not just the soldiers trying to kill me, I know many players murdered one of the Barney's so they could get their first pistol. lol) Suddenly, come Half Life 2, and I'm now some messianic figure who's a legend because of my actions in Black Mesa and now am leading a resistance movement against a tyrannical alien regime that sprung up in the meantime. I know the lore behind it, but it still feels pretty jarring.

That being said, the main problem with Half Life right now has been its constant cliffhangers never resolving the plot. Even the leaked original Episode 3 plans still ended on a cliffhanger. Nobody would be clamoring this hard all these years for a Half Life sequel if the plot was at least somewhat resolved, and it seems like despite Alyx coming out, they still have no intention of actually ending the damn thing. Even RAGE eventually got an ending, fucking RAGE with the second game. RAGE had easily one of the worst video game endings of all time (despite me liking that game otherwise) and RAGE 2 at least finally resolved that. Duke Nukem Forever also had a fucking ending. Half Life 2 Episode 3/Half Life 3 was announced back in like 2006 or 2007. It's been in development hell longer than even Duke Nukem Forever has been at this point. I want Valve to end the story and properly conclude Gordon's adventures first before exploring anything else.

I really think some kind of multimedia project detailing the Seven Hour War could work out really well. Whether it's a series or game or something else entirely.

But who knows? Maybe it's already in the works as there's supposedly two more Half-Life games in the works.

Of course, more than anything I'd want to see them move forward and tell the story after the ending of Episode 2 but I think Valve is legit scared to because of how careful they'll have to be.

Half Life: Alyx did jumpstart the Episode 2 cliffhanger however. With Eli alive and Alyx sonlmewhere in stasis, who knows where they're going next but I would imagine the Borealis is still the destination.

I honestly found that plot twist at the end of Alyx to be pointless. It's been so long since Episode 2 that Eli's original voice actor has already passed away. RIP Robert Guillaume. What's the point of bringing him back at this point? This just feels like Valve doing stuff willy nilly, which doesn't bode well IMO for how they'll continue the story in the future. Stop stringing us along, stop retconning things, just give us an ending.
