Thread: The Rise and Fall of Driveclub

In 2013 Sony announced a new and revolutionary racing game to help usher in the PlayStation 4 called Driveclub. This is the story of the racer meant to ride the wave of a new and exciting generation of connected social games but ultimately crashed at the finish line, leading to its studio's collapse and changing how we look at connected games forever.

Was a really great game but the connectivity being down at launch, which was really the whole point of the game, totally doomed it.

such a fun game. The bike expansion was real good too. I would have loved to see this grow into a Forza Horizon competitor but I understand it launched in a shit state and probably soured any good will it could have built.

Solid racing game. Though I didnt play it until a year or so after release. It was a nice alternative to GT and Forza.

Beautiful looking game in the right weather conditions. Framerate killed it for me, just didn't have that magical racing sauce.

I've never cared so much about friends and world leaderboards as I did with this game. And the fact that each car had its own leaderboard per track was the cherry on top. I had my name in a few top 10s with a few of my favourite cars.

I loved this game and completely echo @regawdless point about how sad it was with what happened to the team and the game. I loved Bloodborne on PS4 but I would say I loved this game more. This game was my go-to whether I had a quick 20 minutes to spare, or all evening.

The DLC was so strong for this game I was really anticipating a new season of content. Then the news dropped about the game going offline. The way it felt for me, was like Sony was throwing its best game under the bus.

Side point but I was a huge huge fan of PGR also. And this game felt very much like a rebirth of sorts of that old franchise. Just to get tarred by the same shitty treatment. Oh well. 😑

Rise? Let's not fool ourselves, it was a flop from day one. The real shame is Sony closing Evolution Studios when it was obvious how talented they were and that there was a market for their games. MotorStorm for PS4 would've easily made Sony money and paid for itself.

Yea, it did give me some PGR vibes too. Which is what I liked about it. Put the emphasis on style and fun while maintaining some semblance of (relative) realism.

No weather gifs yet? For shame guys

The weather update was huge and amazing. But again, sadly it was an update. If it was all there on day one, the story of this game would've been a different one.

Outside of the weather, the lighting was also incredible. Sunset and night races where so good.

Let's also not forget the huge amount of very good DLC. DriveClub with all the content is one of the racing GOATs.

I loved this game's graphics so much, yet I somehow never had any fun playing this game.
I guess cart racers and stuff like Excite Truck are more of my thing than halfway sim racers.
