So I gave in and bought Control from GOG for $40 a couple of days ago.

I've been meaning to look into for awhile since one of my favorite themes is anything in regards to other dimensions and dimensional travel.

So at this point I wonder how good Alan Wake and Quantum Break is? I know the latter is about time travel and it stars Lance Reddick, who I was first introduced to in the TV series Fringe and later appeared in the John Wick films.

Quantum Break looks good with regards to graphics and gameplay. The amazing Lance Reddick aside though, the rest of the cast and live action sequences look straight out of a CW production. I can't get over how generic the main character looks.

I'm still waiting on the other new games in the Remedy universe to be announced as well.

Really? The TV show part has been basically what prevented me from installing it all this time!

The TV show has ZERO action scenes and is entirely based around ancillary characters who only appear in the main-game via lore you read, there's an occasional glimpse of some of the actual stars but nothing important ever happens in it. I sat through the whole thing, it was SO boring and totally hurt the flow of the game. There's a VERY good reason this show never aired on TV, I've never seen a worse TV show in my life.

It's odd how Remedy is using FMV live action cutscenes for their games lately.

I mean that was a thing from the 90s that was better off staying there.

Live action comes off as so cheap and cornball. It really hurts games like that which are trying to be serious. Quantum Break looks just like a CW show. The generic guy with the 3 o'clock shadow turns me off of it. The only good thing from this is Lance Reddick.

Even Alan Wake looks hard to swallow. I've heard nothing but good about this game with some people saying it's even better than Silent Hill. But that voice acting.... Oh man, that voice acting. And Wake himself looks generic.

However Control looks so good so I wanted to dive into this. I always loved the idea of a shared universe long before Marvel Studios.

But yeah Remedy has some odd choices.

I like the live action stuff in Control, they're almost all the same character talking in them and he's pretty good. I don't remember Alan Wake having bad voice acting, might need to replay it, it's been since well... 2010 when it came out. But I loved the game. They do the pulpy noir vibe a lot so that could be what put you off.

I'm looking forward to the other games they're working on that is supposedly within the Remedy-verse.

The three games that are almost for sure that exist in the same universe/multiverse is Control, Quantum Break and Alan Wake.

Supposedly Max Payne might exist in this shared universe as well.

I think there was one other game as well - Death Race or something like that. (Edit: Death Rally)

They have covered other dimensions, time travel and horror.

Maybe the next one will deal with space? Or it'll go more of a "grounded" route like a military or crime shooter?

Death Rally looks like something @MetalAlien would love.

I've saw many positive reviews for Alan Wake when I was researching survival horror games last Halloween. 👻

The noir stuff sounds great to me!

I've heard people say they found it scarier or just better than Silent Hill.

I've never played Alan Wake and I'm not exactly too much of a Silent Hill lore buff but I love the background lore of SH.

I forgot that Wake was a 360 game. For some reason I kept thinking it was an OG Xbox game.

Either way I am a fan of shared universes if done right so I'm curious where Remedy will go from here.

I can almost see a Control and Quantum Break crossover with how crazy that would be.

Also major Quantum Break spoiler question....

Isn't Lance Reddick's character some kind of powerful "time entity" or a human that was affected by the time anomalies to the point he's immortal and/or living in all points in time?

I've not played Alan Wake or Quantum Break yet. I must, soon, though. I really want to play Silent Hill!

Pure speculation on my part but I wouldn't doubt Remedy is preparing for an Infinity War kind of event down the line.

This might be why they're working on other games that will be part of the Remedy universe.

Most of all I can see a Control/Quantum Break crossover.

All this probably won't happen for another 5 to 10 years, assuming they don't try and rush things.

By the way @Aiden Pearce in case you haven't read it yet.

There might be some spoilers but I'll quote the more non-spoiler-ish parts.

According to Remedy, the dream of this shared universe has existed for over 10 years, which means it was likely conceived during the development of Alan Wake. The AWE expansion is identified by the developer as "the first concrete step" on the road to establishing this universe. In addition to sharing its excitement for the project, Remedy also announced that the team was already working on a new game to be set in the connected universe, which could be a sequel to Alan Wake or Control, or an entirely new game altogether.

The developers themselves are calling it the "Remedy Connected Universe"

Now I think there was a more recent article that mentioned there are ~five~ new games to be released for the RCU.

I'll see if I can dig it up.

Edit: rumor has it that one of them might be Alan Wake 2.

I need to get back to Control. Waiting for my 3070 (getting one via an HP prebuild, the rest of which I will repurpose after I put the 3070 in my main PC.... was supposed to ship yesterday but will probably get delayed).

I heard the Alan Wake tie in DLC was interesting.

I love Quantum Break and aside from the shitty final boss I think it's better than Control, even with the cheesy TV show. Liam was a badass motherfucker.

I never found the mention of Riverport in the hundreds of Control collectibles but apparently it's there linking it up in the universe. In QB though there are many instances where you'll see the letters "AWE" spray painted on the walls which I realize wasn't on purpose to connect the worlds, but it sure is a weird coincidence.

I love Lance Reddick and the CIA "What Happens If I Take Off The Mask" guy.

Overall I love shared universes if the things they share with are good. All around I like what I see of Control, Quantum Break and Alan Wake.

I think with Control's theme of dimension traveling and Quantum Break's time traveling, that almost screams for a more direct crossover.

I'd love to see what Remedy could do on a higher budget.

Edit: I had always wished System Shock would be included in the Bioshock universe/multiverse. Missed opportunity there.

I just realized it was Aiden Gillen in that game.

At first I was thinking, "that looks a lot like the CIA guy from Dark Knight Rises" and hey it was.

He's got the 24 hour smirk mouth.

Right now 'Control Ultimate Edition' is on sale for $15.99 on GOG.

I think I will play the CONTROL DLC when it's packaged in this way. I don't want to pay for it and I'de like to play the other games in the series first.

Did you hear what they did on Steam with 'Control'?

505 Games Has Removed The Option To Buy Control DLC From Steam

Both expansions have been retired from Steam as per the request of the publisher.

505 Games has removed the option to purchase Control's two expansion as well as the Season Pass from Control: Ultimate Edition's Steam page.

First spotted by a Resetera user, you can see on Steam Database that the storefronts for both "Control - The Foundation" and "Control - AWE" have been retired from Steam as per the request of the publisher. This means users can no longer purchase the DLC separately, meaning Control: Ultimate Edition is now the only way to buy it on Steam.

If you're one of the unlucky people who own Control but haven't had the time to jump into either of the game's expansions, you'll be required to buy another copy of Control just to access the DLC. However, Humble Bundle is temporarily selling the Season Pass for Control for half price. If you're interested in Control's DLC and own the standard version of the game on Steam, make sure to go grab this cheaper Season Pass before it goes away.
505 Games has repeatedly sparked the ire of fans over its decisions regarding Control: Ultimate Edition. In August last year, 505 revealed that only players with the Ultimate Edition would be able to receive a free next-gen upgrade, leading early adopters to claim they were being punished for supporting the game. Despite the outcry, 505 explained that it was impossible to upgrade players who had bought the Deluxe Edition.

That was until 505 accidentally upgraded Deluxe Edition owners free of charge before quickly revoking the upgrade, much to the dismay of fans. Now it looks like 505 is risking upsetting fans once again by removing the game's DLC from Steam entirely, likely in an attempt to push more people to the Ultimate Edition.

Fortunately, the standard edition of Control, all the game's DLC, and the Season Pass can still be purchased separately on the Epic Games Store. It's not particularly useful for Steam users that have been burned by 505, but it's there for players that only want to purchase the standard edition. Control is also available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and can be streamed on Nintendo Switch.

So all or most of Control takes place inside one building, specifically the 'Old House', correct?

Because if so I think it does remind me of the original Half Life.

@Cryptek

I really recommend you get to playing Alan Wake.

It is a really great experience overall and for me oozes that typical Remedy craft, atmosphere in general with some great set-pieces. As an older game is stands up to today's standards incredibly well and is very much worth your time.

@Explosive Zombie I always thought the more pulpy style of delivery of some aspects of Alan Wake were a conscious decision to show the way the dark power was using Alan's work (pulpy horror writing) to influence events against him. I really liked this as it reinforced the idea of Alan Wake being this Steven King/Sutter Kane character at odds with his success and the style of his writing.

I will do a (happy) shit if they announce a new Alan Wake!

Yes, these are definitely pulpy narratives
