Clarksville residents are going crazy over mystery chicken that crosses busy road
CLARKSVILLE, In. (WDRB) -- When you're behind the wheel on Brown Station Way, there's little time to focus on anything, other than traffic flying by.
However, if you happen to hit the red light at Randolph Avenue, you might see something else flying.
"I think she may roost in this line of trees over here," Cathie Miller said.
She's talking about an elusive chicken, captured on camera crossing the road.
It's just like those 'why did the chicken cross the road?' jokes from elementary school that were never funny. Yet people are still writing the "knee slappers" and plenty of comments about the chicken on the "What's Happening Clarksville?" Facebook page.
"People are proposing names," Miller explained.
They also wonder if it's a hen or a rooster.
"Nobody gets that close to it to be able to tell," Miller added. "You're going to get pecked."
Even the police department is in on the hen (or rooster) hype.
"They're proposing a change to their cruisers, you know tongue and cheek, with a chicken decal toward the back of the cruiser," Miller explained.
We know what you're thinking, are you clucking kidding me with this story? There's probably some chicken coop nearby.
Nope. We checked.
That's why everyone seems to be wondering why the bird is so far from a farm.
"It's a really odd, random thing to see a chicken casually strolling through a suburban neighborhood like this," Clarksville resident Matt Harris said.
Some commenters pointed out, the Clarksville Roosters did just reopen.
"It might have escaped," Miller added.
There's also a Chick-fil-A and Joella's Hot Chicken nearby.
"Somewhere pretty close to the same area, I do hear a rooster crowing around the same time in the morning, but it's not the same chicken," Harris said, hinting that the two chickens may be lovers.
Better that, than fighters.
"It could happen, a cock fight," Miller said.
WDRB's Chris Sutter went with Miller to see if they could find the bird on one of the hottest days of the year. There was sweat on their brows and fear of only finding a fried drumstick in their hearts, but they found the chicken.
"I think I see... it's here! It's really here!" said an overjoyed Miller. "It's adorable."
The bird wasn't having it, flying up into a tree. Perhaps it thought Miller and Sutter were bad eggs?
At least now when we ask: "Why did the chicken cross the road?" We know it's to get away from the news crew trying to do a story about it.
