Oscar Nuñez Reprising 'The Office' Role in Peacock's Follow-Up Series

Oscar Nuñez will return as Oscar Martinez in Peacock's follow-up series to "The Office," Variety has confirmed.

Sources say Nuñez will not be the central character in the upcoming mockumentary sitcom — which takes place in the same universe as "The Office" — as it is an ensemble series. But he is part of the show's character mix, and has been in the opening script from the beginning.

There are no further details regarding Oscar's role or storyline in the new show, which Greg Daniels is creating and executive producing with Michael Korman ("Nathan For You").

As of now, Nuñez is believed to be the only "Office" cast member who will appear in the follow-up series (right now still referred to as the "Untitled Daniels/Korman Project") — but it has been noted that since it lives in the world of "The Office," there was always a chance that characters from the original series might appear.

Universal TV and representatives for Nuñez declined to comment. Sources close to the production note that in the past, when asked about rebooting "The Office," Daniels has said he felt he told a complete story for most of the characters — but if there was one character he'd like to revisit and explore, it would be Oscar. (It's believed that producers were hoping to keep Nuñez's involvement a surprise, but the news first leaked Wednesday via newsletter The Insneider.)

The series, rumored to be titled "The Paper," will follow the staffers of a dying Midwestern newspaper whose publisher is trying to revive it with volunteer reporters. It will be "filmed," so to speak, by the same documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch in "The Office" — which might explain the connection to how Oscar winds up in the new setting.

The new show hails from Daniels, the mastermind behind the American "Office," and Koman. Character details have been kept under wraps; previously announced cast members include Domhnall Gleeson ("Star Wars"), Sabrina Impacciatore ("The White Lotus"), Chelsea Frei ("Poker Face"), Melvin Gregg ("Snowfall"), Gbemisola Ikumelo ("Black Ops"), Alex Edelman ("Just For Us"), Ramona Young ("Never Have I Ever") and Tim Key ("The Witchfinder").

Guest stars include Eric Rahill, Duane Shepard Sr., Allan Havey, Nate Jackson, Mo Welch, Nancy Lenehan, Molly Ephraim and Tracy Letts.

Co-creators Daniels and Koman serve as executive producers along with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, who created the original British version of the series, as well as Howard Klein, Ben Silverman and Banijay Americas. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

Daniels opened a writers' room in January 2024 to begin working on the new iteration of "The Office," which ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2013 and followed the staffers of the Pennsylvania branch of a paper company. It starred Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms, Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak, among many others, including Nuñez. The show became even more popular in its afterlife, becoming one of television's biggest streaming hits.

Nuñez's other credits include "Lucky Hank," "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist," "Mr. Iglesias," "People of Earth," and films such as "The Proposal," "Mascots" and "The Lost City." He has also been regularly seen as a pitchman for State Farm.

Can't be worse than the post Michael seasons when they were trying to make Ed Helms a thing.

St. Denis is pretty good. Has the chick from Reno 911. Pretty soon all the Reno cast will have their own mockumentary show.

The show really went downhill after Michael left. Then towards the end they tried to setup a Schrute farms spinoff too which never happened. It's quite jarring looking at the characters, jokes and settings in the first few seasons vs the last few. They got more absurd as time went on and it moved away from being grounded and believable as a mockumentary and into the direction of being a pure comedy, something more abstract and skit based. The show worked initially because it was so relatable, anyone who works in an office can identify coworkers with elements of each of the characters but by the end the characters had kind of become extravagant parodies of themselves where their quirks had become their entire personalities and their hijinks were more extreme and outlandish trying to top the last each time. I love the show but whenever I rewatch it there's a reason I stop soon after Michael leaves.

Was Oscar the Spanish accountant guy ?
Its going to suck.
The show worked because of Carell making insanely inappropriate jokes and the sexual tension between Pam and Jim. Once both those things were removed the show went downhill.
And we all know it's going to be woke. There will be gay trans non binaries etc...
Good luck on this but I see 0 chance of it being good

it says he's not the central character

I liked the Office (both versions) and both of them. But two seasons of each was enough for me. I know the US one went on for another 5+ seasons, but I was done and tapped out after two. So no real interest in a spin off at this point.

Well, it can certainly be worse than the post Michael seasons. The show was different and not as good, but it was still serviceable imo. Where I agree 100% is that Ed Helms sucks. He's not good in anything he's ever been in imo. He's just cringeworthy in all the wrong ways, no matter what he is doing. Carell was cringeworthy in funny/entertaining ways way more often than not.

That being said, I think the show jumped the shark long before Carell left. Doesn't mean it wasn't still entertaining, but I'd say after season 5 so much of it was nonsense from there for some of the reasons @Tapped outlined above.

Still, all time great show on the whole. This spinoff, meh, whatever. I'll check it out, but expectations are low.

Yeah the first three seasons or so were definitely the best for sure. I never checked out the UK version. Been meaning to get around to that for years.

Really odd to just throw one random castmate back in to a reboot. Maybe he was the only one they could get to say yes.

And then I assume if the show ends up not being a total turd and gets ratings, they'll be able to convince other castmates to make appearances or maybe even join in. The major players are all so rich from it that they don't have to embarrass themselves with the risk of it being a dud.

I really enjoyed Parks & Rec, but I haven't been able to get more than an episode or 2 into US Office.

Maybe I should skip to series 2 as people say, but I enjoyed S1 of Community and P&R just fine.

I need to try and change my own opinion, because every time I see that "They're the same picture" meme of whatever her name is she just looks like an annoyingly smug person to me.

Pam was never the best comedic actor, especially for the Office. It's a rare woman who can pull off deadpan humor without it seeming off.

Its very good. I would not say one is 'better' than the other, but I thought some characters were better in one version and some better in the other. The only thing about the British one is that you have to enjoy Ricky Gervais, cuz he is a big part of the humor there. If you do not like his style of comedy, you will not enjoy it.

I'm with you.....Ed Helms killed the show for me, such an unlikable character

Ya Pam wasn't exactly funny but her and Jim's romance was the core of the show. Its the same for a lot of shows. The romantic tension grips the audience but eventually the series has to pay it off and then it kind of goes downhill from their. Friends had the same issue with Ross and Rachel.
The show was 45% the Micheal Scott character. 45% the office romance. And 10% everything else.

isn't that the episode where Ed Helms ripped his balls on his keys while doing a split? That was one of the all time classic moments in TV/cinematic history, dare I even say world events.

I actually credit the Wedding episode as one of the best all time moments on the show when Dwight is trying to fuck the bridesmaids
