Thread: The Last of Us 3 has a plot outline, but isn't being made just yet.

The Last of Us 3 has a basic plot outline, creative director Neil Druckmann has revealed.

Speaking on the Script Apart podcast with fellow co-writer Halley Gross (and first spotted by IGN), Druckmann revealed that there's been "quite a bit" of discussion within developer Naughty Dog about The Last of Us 3. "I don't know how much I want to reveal... [Halley Gross] and I did write an outline for a story, that we're not making – but I hope one day can see the light of day – that explores a little bit what happens after this game. We'll see," the director said.

"We've now had two games that I feel speak to something universal as well as telling a very personal story for these characters. With one game, there's no pattern of what a franchise is," Druckmann continued. "With two games, now there's starting to be a pattern – now I feel like there are some structural and thematic themes you'd have to stick to if you're making a third game."

"After we finish one of our big titles, we take a long time to explore different ideas, whether it's going to be Last of Us 3, whether it's something new, whether there's some old franchise we want to go back to. I like to fully explore all of those, then look at, like: okay, we have all of these ideas in front of us. As a studio, what do we want to commit to? Because it's a huge commitment – monetary, time, passion, talent, so you think about all the opportunity costs that come with that," Druckmann concluded of the sequel talk.

Structural and thematic themes they have to stick to....
So.... More woke?.. More boring "oh-mah-trans-struggles" stories? Sign me up.

Oh shit are you ManOfOne from NeoGorf?

But yeah I was going to reply with something similar.

Really though I find it difficult to just get into these Zombie Dramas, as I call them nowadays. I guess we have Walking Dead to blame for this?

It's going to be about the social and cultural struggle to accept and integrate the Clickers.

A minority that faces systemical racism and discrimination. They are the victims of many, many unarmed shootings. Why don't people try to de-escalate more? Why should they be discriminated against, when they did not choose their opinions and preferences? I mean, it's a fungus, so it's natural. They have been born as human beings and should be treated with dignity and respect. Where is the equity here?

There's nothing a Clicker can't do equally as well as a human. Nothing. Nothing. NOTHING.

#ClickerLivesMatter
#Accountability

It's going to be about Ellie transitioning and suiciding to make the cure.

Jokes aside, I think they should do The Last of Us 2 Director's Cut. Too many things wrong with that thing, that isn't so hard to fix I think.

The best advice I can give them is to throw the plot outline away, seriously look at what went wrong with TLoU2 and the (real, non critic) feedback, and look at what went right with the first game, maybe even hiring back some of the same personnel that I understand were less involved or not involved at all.

But I think we all know that's not going to happen. At best, there'll be some surface-level concessions, like keeping it all Ellie. The rest will exist to serve Neil Druckmann's ego and (from a distance, I haven't played) not great storytelling ideals.

This franchise highlights what's wrong with current game development cycles. The story of a TLoS-game basically equals the story of one season of a tv show. Imagine having to wait 4-5 years between two seasons. Nobody would wait that long, people would move on. But gamers are expected to wait.4+ years means you might be in a totally different life situation. Not criticizing Naughty Dog here specifically, but the industry as a whole and that there haven't been good solutions yet. Games with a heavy focus on story like TLoS should release on a yearly basis imo, but something has to change to make that possible. Valve once tried with its Half-Life episodes, but failed. I hope that concept is being picked up again.

I just don't care about the next TLOU anymore. Druckmann threw away two important characters making them uber retards, Joel and Ellie. He didn't respect what he'd accomplished with these two characters with the first one.

You play as Joel, resurrected as a true undead-clicker hybrid, traveling across the country to reunite with Ellie and wage war on the Fireflies. Along the way you get your sweet, sweet revenge on Abby, and Naughty Dog is finally able to make peace with all the fans it angered and alienated with the second game.

Actually make Anita Sarkeesian the main char and beat Abby to death with a golf club because she wasn't a 100% good ally and watch the whole woke world melt away with that.

Wonder when it comes out that Druckman is one of them creepy touchy faux male Feminists. He ticks all the boxes.

As for the game. Sounds dull. Woke is dull. Social Justice themes are dull. Virtue Signalling is dull!

I might actually be the biggest Naughty Dog fan on the forum. Best games studio ever. Part 2 wasn't perfect but I'm down for anything the put out there at full price, day one.

I really hope the rumored PC ports are true ❤.

I used to like them a lot, but I found Uncharted 4 to be quite boring and I wasn't going to give them money for The Woke of Us 2.

It'd be awesome if they went and made a crazy new generation Jak and Daxter or something. Just a fun game with crazy visuals and no "pat me on the back for being on the right side of history" bullshit from Dreck-Man.

I liked Uncharted 4 but on replay I loved it. I think once I knew (similar to a film) it was a action heavy last third it became so much more enjoyable.

To be honest third person story games are my jam. Only discovered Spec Ops the line last month and that was amazing. Add in Plague Tale and the genre is quite healthy.

I can see a directors cut of part 2 coming out where they take *some* of the criticisms on board.

I love the first three Uncharted games but was a bit meh on Uncharted 4, tbh.

It's way too slow paced. I get that the story, writing and all that were supposed to be the focus, but the thing I loved about the Uncharted games in the first place was all those crazy, cinematic moments were playable. When I was shooting goons on a plane that was disintegrating mid-flight, I had full control. When I was dodging a tank trying to grab RPGs in a Tiben village, I had full control. When I was running through a train while a helicopter gunship was peppering my area with miniguns and missiles, I had full control.

When I'm just climbing stuff without any meaningful input on my part listening to characters babble on for a while, I don't feel like I'm an active participant in the story but a passive observer. At that point, I might as well just watch it on Youtube for free.

I still liked the story and am happy Druckmann didn't go full TLOU with it, but I definitely really missed Amy Hennig's touch. Naughty Dog died the day she left the studio.

I was a huge fan of the trilogy and I hated 4. Too much focus on story and climbing. Still haven't replayed it.

It's a bit like the Resident Evil franchise in the respect that different people come to it for different reasons. Uncharted and Last of Us play very differently and Uncharted 4 is a blend of both of these styles. Your milage will vary depending on how much you like both elements IMO.

What did you think of Lost Legacy? I felt like that was alot more action focused 😊.

Haven't played that one, though I did hear good things.

Granted, 3's enough of an ending to the series that I typically just stick with the Nathan Drake Collection and call it a day.

And yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of TLOU, even the first one. So Uncharted 4 going more TLOU is not something I was particularly into.

On a separate note, the biggest reason why I disliked TLOU 1 was Joel dooming the entirety of humanity for one girl he bonded with, so the story of how the relatives of the people he killed coming back and beating him to death with a golf club and Ellie ending up bitter and alone at the end is exactly the kind of story I would've written as a way to troll fans of the original.

And it absolutely baffles me that TLOU2's story actually went that route because you'd figure the people who'd be most interested in the sequel are fans of the original, not people who disliked it like me. Granted, I didn't find TLOU2's story great either, as everyone was a complete dickhead and the story had a lot of cringe inducing moments.

See I didn't mind the story of Part 2. I was never under the illusion Joel was a "good man" and Last of Us always dealed with shades of grey.

My main problem was with making so many of the women fulgly and boobs = bad message lol. Like fair enough for some to be like that but not nearly everyone while men are largely unaffected from been "aspirational" for lack of a better word. But it's a small point in an otherwise wonderful game (for me).

I thought Joel was a dickhead so I was happy he got his face caved in. lol

But still, how is it that the story would sound like something I would come up with rather than a fan of the original? That's what baffles me.

I don't think all fans of the first game necessarily wanted a different story. Personally speaking I like to be challenged creatively. I love it when they put a character I care about through hell or make them morally questionable... think along the lines of Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones etc. I think its similar to tv show when some fans kick off if there favorite character is killed off, where they think the whole show is worthless because of what happened etc. Me I love it when someone I care about is axed, makes it proper emotional and gripping.

Essentially different people coming to the same product for different things. While I loved the story I can understand those that don't. I always wanted a story from "the other side". Too often "heroes" who kill thousands get a free pass. Not in this world. ❤

I just hope the 3rd game is even MORE woke and cringe for the memes.
The memes for the second game were on a level I'd never seen before.

In terms of TLOU love not sure you beat me, but I never played their older stuff. TLOU II might be my GOTY 2020, have to see what I think after Cyberpunk is finished being... finished and I got other stuff to play but the great gameplay, potentially the best visuals ever and the most adult storytelling in gaming combined for something truly special for me in TLOU II.

With Uncharted I dunno, they're REALLY fun games for me and I'm one of the few who will talk up their combat, playing them on harder difficulties, especially Crushing can be amazing but I've never been enamored with the characters or the stories in them, I prefer grim, dark, depressing shit like TLOU, not happier Indiana Jones. And yes, I said happier, Raiders and Temple of Doom are WAY more badass in terms of story and where their stories go than any Uncharted game. Last Crusade is great, too, a good example of how out of its mind the story can go. Uncharted tried that in the beginning, having supernatural shit happen but they messed up the execution and so just stopped attempting it. Lost Legacy was the last one I played and while I liked a lot of what they did to improve the formula (like the big open first half) it still might be my least favorite entry because of story stuff and all that.

Naughty Dog do that for me, though, where they go from making games I'm not even interested in to something as fun and exciting as the Uncharted games and from that they come up with TLOU something that works for me on a whole other front Uncharted didn't work on either. Can't wait to see what a next-gen exclusive Naughty Dog game entails.
