Thread: The GPU Thread
@regawdless Did you save any of your budget for this monitor?

That's a crazy one, wow. But nope, definitely wouldn't. Wouldn't even use it for free.

Because the resolution is too high. I like high fps gaming and even with a 5090, the res is too high for my fps goals. 3440x1440 is the sweet spot and I already have the best monitor for that, the Alienware OLED curved one.

Btw. the cheapest new 4090 in Germany is listed at 3.5€. Absolutely ridiculous. You'd think you'd be able to buy one at least for the MSRP of the faster 5090. But it's actually more expensive than the 5090.

Btw guys has anyone compared single framegen latency between 5000 and 4000 series? I know the 5000 with multi can insert many frames between with not too much latency something they say 4000 cant do. But when inserting just one frame did situation improve?

Very interesting question, I did some reading on that but don't have a definitive answer yet.

There's an article that has been recently posted by Nvidia, explaining a bunch of tech stuff for Blackwell. It says:

In DLSS 3's Frame Generation, a single 4K frame could be generated (thus doubling the frame rate) in around 3.25ms on a GeForce RTX 4090. In contrast DLSS 4's Multi Frame Generation, each of the three new frames (a quadrupling of the frame rate) can be generated in around 1ms on average on a GeForce RTX 5090 at the time of launch.

So it's apparently significantly faster but I couldn't find anything that compares the specific gains with the normal 2x frame generation that can be done on 40xx cards as well. And that's from a 4090 to 5090 comparison with the 5090 being significantly faster so that's a flawed basis. We should take a 5080 and compare it to the 4080 Super. Maybe I'll find something... Now I want to know lol.

I also asked my bro Bryan from Nvidia on X, maybe he'll answer.

Pretty extensive comparison between the 9070XT and and 5070ti

Good information but the summary was a bit too positive for the 9070XT. I feel like he didn't get across two points:

The AMD card has some severe issues with path traced games and AMD is not nearly competitive in that regard, because Nvidia has build up all the tech, like in Indiana Jones. The arguably best looking game at the moment simply can't be played on AMD hardware.

RT-Indiana-p.webp

Second point is FSR3, he was very positive on it and not very neutral imo. Yes, it's impressive and great. But very limited in support so far, you can't go back to most old games and upgrade it like you can with DLSS. Because AMD switched to a .dll late in the game and only those work. Meaning for the majority of games, you're stuck with super ugly FSR2 vs the super good DLSS4. Which is a very important factor.

Other than that, I think he did a very good job. Interesting how there are wildly different results depending on the games.

What games have you been testing/maxing out @regawdless ? I bet your in heaven with Cyberpunk with full RT settings!

Interested what you think of frame gen also :D

Cyberpunk maxed with PT and DLAA is a great experience lol

Played the Half Life 2 RTX demo, a lof of fun and runs great.
Star Wars Outlaws looks insanely good after it received a bunch of updates, now has the latest Ray Reconstruction and DLSS model.
MH Wilds finally runs well, using frame gen for a smooth locked 100fps
and more, it all runs great!

Frame gen, I don't use MFG, have no use for that. I used the normal FG in a few games, looked good to me and no real issues with that. Definitely feels smoother and when having a base 70-80 fps, there's no latency impact that I can feel.

I'm still half way though my Half Life 2 playthrough, so I may post pone it until the full RTX game comes out.

I took 3 days off work (long weekend) for when the Last of Us: Part 2 comes out. Spiderman 2 will also show case the 5090 very well, I'd imagine.

I found the same as you with regards to frame gen. When the base is good, its a nice feature. I guess fairly niche, because the first port of call will be DLSS, and then frame gen.

There's an issue with Plague Tale Requiem where you have a noisy red tint, which is the case now with my game. Happens with a variety of cards and setups. Now, I tried to fix it by doing a clean driver re-install.... which doesn't work. Always goes to infinite black screen.

Nvidia showing a lot of weaknesses lately that weren't there before. I hope they get back on track.

Good news!

The stupidly priced and dumb ass 5090 Astral for over 3.7k € is not selling, stock isn't moving, it's a sales failure and nobody wants it. At least people aren't THAT retarded.

Hmmm I'm kinda shocked.

In all the reviews and analysis I was neutral (slightly negative maybe) on the Nvidia MFG stuff, it wasn't something that I even took into account for my purchasing decision. I didn't plan on using it with my 5090.

Now I tested it just out of curiosity, in Star Wars Outlaws. It's.... Really good? Like, with all the super crazy extra max settings and DLAA I get 40-50fps base, but 3x frame gen to around 140fps feels awesome tbh. Snappy controls with a controller, no noticable lag, super fluid, great looking with DLAA. Didn't notice artefacts going back and forth between modes.

I wouldn't want to play it without MFG anymore. Had a friend around yesterday and I let him play it without telling him MFG was on, he thought it was running at over 120fps natively. It's very, very good.

I think it's Nvidia Reflex + Boost doing its work on the input lag side of things. I did some testing with a few hames back when I had the 3080 and noticed that even at sub 30fps some had pretty good controller response with Reflex and Boost, there was this strange disconnect of the camera controls feeling direct but the game stuttering because of low fps.

All that said, the game lends itself well to MFG. Cinematic rather slow third person game with a controller. The result is still damn good, I might be coming around on that MFG thing. A lot of the fake frames drama is overblown outrage. It's good. No, it doesn't make a 5070 into a 4090. But with an ok base frame rate, it's very good.

The 5080 came! This card is nuts... I don't know how, but it's smaller, quieter AND cooler than my OG 3080...

Not only that, but it's eating up everything I'm throwing at it. I never thought I'd play Cyberpunk at this quality... It's surreal. I have everything maxed. DLSS set at balanced (because performance gives me too many frames, 120 is my max on my LGOLED and I don't know how to cap it atm so it stutters a lot if I go over). Then RT at max and with frame gen X2 (Again, because anything else would give me way too many frames and it starts to stutter) I'm getting 80fps and it feels incredibly smooth. The combination of the crispness of 4k, the smoothness of 80fps and the clearness when everything is in motion... It's freaking wild. Running the benchmark at native without RT I couldn't tell the difference in image quality when I used DLSS with the transformer model at balanced btw. And the input lag is actually better than with my 3080...

Tried Death Stranding, which was stutter city on my 3080 at 4k and again the combination of crispness, high fps and responsiveness is incredible. And I haven't even tried overclocking it yet... As is, even at full load it's still quieter than my old one and doesn't even heat up the room like it did either. Heck, I even think HDR looks better on this card for some reason. Maybe that's placebo, but I swear there's something going on here. Maybe it's just how clean everything is so the HDR works better?

Some magic going on.

All I know is that I'm incredibly satisfied and this card will undoubtedly tide me over till next gens new architecture where I'll snag the flagship if it isn't a balls to the wall price like it was this time so I'm set for a good long while.

You can cap the framerate using Nvidia control panel. I do that for my LG C9, which is a 120 hz panel. The 5080 really is a great GPU despite the initial underwhelming impressions. A big leap over my 3080 FE.

We have any word on when the 5060Ti is gonna drop and we get benchmarks? I know its "soon" but it seems most expected it last week and dont have updates.

I am curious how it looks compared to my 3060Ti and see if it warrants any consideration. Or wait for a killer sale on a 5070ti or wait even longer for the 6000 series. On paper it looks like a minor upgrade, but some benchmarks would be nice.

Congrats! The cards did get a lot of shit compared to the 40xx series. But coming from the 30xx cards, they're a good upgrade and just on their own, very good cards. And the Nvidia features do provide additional value.

Is that the MSI Shadow? There doesn't seem to be many reviews for this model.

I was thinking about the Shadow since it was closer to the fictional "MSRP" and I like the blacked out look. I would also be upgrading from a 3080, although my ASUS TUF 3080 is pretty quiet. My timeline for upgrading would be this summer, so hopefully stock (and maybe pricing) will be more favorable.

Yup. It's the shadow. I was just watching the stock alerts page and happened to snag it. I didn't like the way it looked at first but the blacked out look grew on me a lot. It actually looks better in my case than my last one. It came with a neat magnetic gpu brace that actually looks nice. It's the one in this video. Looks like they give it out with several of their card models.

Although the card is lighter than my last one and doesn't seem like it would sag, it's nice peace of mind.

Ok I have to backtrack a bit on frame generation.

While awesome just running around in Outlaws, when driving with your Speeder in the open world, it's not good. The fast speed with a ton of vegetation, water with reflections and objects in it - that combination introduces visible and distracting artefacts. At the same time, wow are those open world segments heavy on the GPU when running the game all maxed out, damn. Gotta tinker a bit with the settings. But MFG isn't the best solution here, clearly showing the limits of that tech.

PhysX and Flow GPU Source Code Now Available!

Doesn't really make up for dropping the support on the latest graphics cards, but now that it's all open sourced there's hope for a solution so games like Mirror's Edge and Batman: Arkham Asylum can run well again.
