Thread: The Day Before: devs shut down after 4 days - guess who's back now
The Division exists. I'm thinking there's a market for these super shit games. YouTubers, streamers etc will pick up on it, trash it and bring attention to it. Enough people will buy it just to say they played Shitty Division. The developers will probably make some money.

Not for me, but a lot of people really dig this sort of thing. A persistent DayZ/PUBG crossed with The Division is bound to appeal to some people. Early Access seems like a smart approach for it, as people know what they are getting into and there's a direct feedback loop.

The only thing I did think is that the in-game currency is called Woodbury coins, which you know is going to get shortened so everyone will be running around going 'I need wood' or 'He has wood' or 'I've got wood'

Seems the game has taken a substantial visual downgrade from the initial trailer, less density of clutter, environments and player characters not as detailed. I'm still going to be shocked should even the supposed Early Access period launch in a week, let alone this ever sees a 1.0 release.

This has that feeling of vapourware or a scam and I can't really put my finger on why.

That trailer honestly doesn't look too bad. Sure, visuals are rather crappy, but it's kinda cool. Doubt they'll pull all that off in a fun way though.

THE GAME IS OUT

What's an extraction shooter? Is that where you have a guide someone out or make it from one side of the map to the other? Etc.

It was a total scam.

Looks like they ran out of money and the launch wasn't successful enough to keep going.

And honestly, it happens. For my experience in managing software projects, with the more difficult ones, basically all of the estimations from the team for the bigger features are wrong. Nearly always too optimistic, it turns out to be more complicated than expected. Even from experienced devs. It's tough and complicated. The devs of the game said they overestimated their capabilities and I believe them because I saw similar things happen countless times.

@Musky_Cheese the whole saga got a quick ending, I think both of us were hoping for some more drama with this one.

100% agree. From my experience budgets are always calculated tightly and during the development process there are always surprises nobody thought about during the planning stages. I'm not in game dev but shit must be similar more or less.

Edit: on topic. It's sad to read. The statement felt really honest to me. So sorry for them that days before didn't pan out with the plan they had in mind.

I think that the devs should really be honest about the state of the game if they are going to release it in such a botched state. Getting defensive about it won't help them either. They should just say they didn't have enough time/resources and they did the best they could. Anything else is just insulting peoples intelligence.

If they really wanted to make things better, they could have released some updates making it a meme game and go for an alternative angle to attract players. Putting that toilet skibidi thing in it might make the younger crowd rush to play it.

I'll be honest. Entire thing seems needlessly cruel. It's like everyone decided this game was that offensive to their sensibilities (even though it was early access) so lets rubbish it entirely and actively ensure it garners no support and then put the entire dev team out of work right before Christmas. GJ IGN.

It's the clicks business, they need those clicks. And this drama generates attention, so IGN will use that.

I wouldn't blame IGN much though, shit should be called shit. If IGN chimes in or not, Steam reviews were abysmal and the word got around quickly.

Its blood in the water syndrome. Game is nowhere near high profile enough to really justify an IGN review. I'm not saying it undoubtedly had problems, but it does seems like everyone was very eager to declare it the worst thing ever right out of the gate, even though it was Early Access.

With all the drama leading up to it's release, the delays, the high promises, the trademark shit show, game being pulled from Steam before launch, coming back with a promising trailer - during a slow period of the year, I totally understand IGN covering this, because it is damn interesting, people want to know.

The publisher charged 40 bucks for this Early Access game, same as Witchfire, which is damn amazing despite having big issues at launch (performance was shit, balance issues, screen effects covered everything during combat etc.) I understand the challenges for the devs very well, but a bad product deserves to be called out imo.

Kudos to the dev person for being that honest. It's an absolute shit show, but shit happens. I believe they did their best, working long hours, devoting years of their lives to this game. They're the most disappointed people in this mess, for sure. Hope they learn from it, recover and get the chance to work on better projects.

Have to agree with this. I'm sure the game is awful but IGN are giving it a 1/10 for attention and nothing more.

If the game was an asset flip, volunteer staff how did it not make a good profit?

You'd think a No Man's Sky redemption would be possible and cost efficient.

Yeah I feel like it wouldn't have got a 1 if the studio hadn't gone under before the review was finished.

For some reason also Zombie games get irrational hate. Days Gone was a great game and some outlets rated that like a 6/10.

It should really be a lesson to these types of developers to not be so ambitious when it comes to the technical side of games. It's possible to turn a simple idea into a wildly popular indie game.

This just seems like they wanted to create a game that would rival the likes of Ubisoft or EA when they should have been looking at companies like Motion Twin or Supergiant Games.
