Thread: Tekken 8 announced for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC

I have a bit of a craving for Tekken lately, having recently watched some YouTube stuff.

The video makes it look suspiciously like it has something similar to X-Ray attacks from MK or Supers from SF, but I hope it doesn't and that's all just cinematic flash.

It will be weird not having Heihachi about too, but we'll see. 8 also seems to be about killing off my preferred character, so there's a lot to find out with this one.

Bandai Namco has announced Tekken 8 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC (Steam). A release date was not announced.

Here is an overview of the game, via Bandai Namco:

Developed by Bandai Namco Studios, Tekken 8 pushes the envelope for fighting games and takes full advantage of the power of the latest generation of consoles by creating one of the most visually stunning and immersive titles in the genre yet. Tekken 8 picks up after the gruesome battle that ended in Heihachi Mishima's defeat, focusing on a new rivalry pitting father against son as Jin Kazama stands in defiance against Kazuya Mishima's quest for world dominance.

"We are very excited to show the next generation of Tekken," said Bandai Namco Studios chief producer Katsuhiro Harada in a press release. "The team at Bandai Namco Studios has been hard at work to bring groundbreaking new features to Tekken 7, pushing the feeling of power in battles continuously further by harnessing the power of the latest generation of consoles. We can't wait to show you more in the months to come."

Here are some additional details, via chief producer Katsuhiro Harada on PlayStation Blog:

Hi, this is Harada, chief producer of the Tekken project. We have kept you waiting for a long time, but we are finally able to announce that Tekken 8 is in production. Have you seen the first trailer yet?

This trailer was actually taken directly from a certain part in the current work-in-progress Tekken 8's story mode, played on PlayStation 5. In other words, all the character models, backgrounds, and effects are the same ones that are used in-game. Although this was captured from the story mode, it is not a pre-rendered movie made for the trailer but rather real-time rendered footage, running at 60 frames per second, similar to how you would experience the game in versus battle modes. (Of course, some of the effects, dialogue as well as the camera angle is currently being updated and may change when the game launches)

The Tekken series has always been known for the dramatic pre-rendered movies from its story mode. And in addition, we also have plenty of other exciting content from Tekken 8 we would very much like to show you. However, for our first announcement, we chose to focus on the content that showcases the quality of this game on PlayStation 5.

In the trailer, you can see this level of quality in the newly created playable character models that completely sets itself apart from the current Tekken 7, and in little details like how water droplets run down the character's skin. This is not footage created solely for trailer purposes, but an actual real-time rendering of what is happening on the game screen.

Also, if you pay attention to the background during the battle, you can see dynamic waves and tornadoes, a huge tanker gradually breaking apart, storm rendering so realistic that you can feel the wind pressure, the density of the rain.

These are all battle stage effects to be used in this title. We are of course working hard to enhance the quality even further. In the latest version of the work-in-progress build, the quality is dynamically improving each day, with the giant tanker moving closer to the shore in the background and large flames flare up near where the character is standing. We hope you look forward to seeing them in-game!

Also, the Tekken series holds the record of being the longest-running story in a video game. Just as the ending dialogue of Tekken 7 mentioned, this new entry will focus on the father and son showdown between Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama. As for the meaning of the scene in the trailer and how significant it is to the main story… we look forward to you finding it out when the game releases.

However, the game is still in development, so I'm afraid we will have to ask you to wait a little longer.

The entire development team is working hard to make this title worth the wait so thank you so much for your support.

This looked too good to be actual gameplay. Even though they say it was, I'll be skeptical till I see release footage.

This may tempt me back since Tekken 6.

They probably mean the cutscene is rendered "real-time" on PS5 instead of pre-rendered on PC.

We'll see if it still comes close to looking as good when they add in the rest of the content and logic with the same high frame rate.

Tekken Chromatic Aberration in the meantime.

Looks good so far. Sucks we don't even have a year of release yet though. At least it sounds like we're past them holding back the home release for an arcade run.

I like how the characters still look like video game characters, especially the faces. Probably modeled by an artists, not face scanned.

They'll include him in a season pass eventually

I'd honestly expect visuals like this for a new current gen only Tekken. Limited to one stage and two characters at a time, FSR to get more performance, should be possible.

That CA is killing me though. Disgusting.

Looks good enough though the little VS gameplay shown looked like even less of an increment over 7 than 7 was over 6. Though they may have a new mechanic or something they've yet to reveal so we'll see.

It's a new Tekken though. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, they have my money.

- Nina looks cool again
- Rage arts simplified even further for n00bs
- Recovery gauge from TTT2 is back
- New 'heat system' explained... apparently makes the game even more beginner friendly?

Color me interested

Another secondary control system designed to simplify and partially play the game for you. =/

It having a real-time toggle is gonna make for some greasy play too.

Right

They don't need to simplify the game for beginners , they need to offer better tutorials so newcomers don't need to resort to youtube to learn the ropes
