Developer Comments

Tetsuya Nomura – Creative Producer

The initial concept for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin came up around the time following the release of Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy. I was thinking to myself about making my next game into one that featured action elements in which locations are conquered, rather than the kind with battles against characters. Some time passed without anything coming of it, but separately I was also thinking to myself about another plan for a new series of Final Fantasy titles revolving around "the story of an angry man". Even more time passed, at which point I received a request for a new plan, so I combined these two ideas to come up with this.

While it is Final Fantasy, it feels different—but there's no doubt that the blood ofFinal Fantasy runs through its veins.

We've undertaken the challenge of finding this difficult middle ground for this mature and stylish title.

We need a little time until we're able to complete it, and while the battle system is a bloody one, it does links to the story, so I hope you'll use this opportunity to give it a try.

Kazushige Nojima – Story and Scenario

"It's not a hope or a dream. It's like a hunger. A thirst."

When I wrote this line, I felt like the story had been brought to life.

What drives them to want to defeat Chaos as much as they do? What, then, are their hopes and dreams?

It was in this moment that what used to be fragments and pieces of story came together in a powerful way. The story that I wrote—in what seemed like a single breath after penning that line—is Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. I think it turned out to be quite a memorable story that accompanies a game which prominently features brutal imagery.

Please enjoy!

Jin Fujiwara – Producer (Square Enix)

True to its label as "a bold new vision," this title is full of new undertakings that draw a clear distinction between it and previous Final Fantasy series titles. I can't divulge too many details at this stage, but we prepared a glimpse of these ambitions within the trial version, including the title's direction and overall image, so please enjoy.

I believe that the feedback we receive from all of you around the world is very important as we improve upon the title even further. Please send us your thoughts through the trial version survey or through social media.

I'm already looking forward to the day I'll be able to play this title with you.

Daisuke Inoue – Director (Square Enix)

This is a title that has been developed with the goal of bringing something new to sit alongside the many Final Fantasy titles in the series. I think it could be considered a side story in terms of how it is positioned.

There may be some people who were disappointed that this announcement was not a new, numbered title in the series, but this game contains ambitions within that even a mainline title may not have been able to achieve.

Grounded and challenging action created by Team Ninja. Our protagonist, sprayed with blood as he literally rips apart, throws, and pulverizing his enemies. The way he looks is almost as if—

Well, we have prepared this trial version with hopes of having players experience this new flavor that the title brings with it, even if just a little bit. As we are still in development, I think there may be some areas that are not perfect and may be that way for a while to come, but I hope you'll enjoy the trial version regardless.

Additionally, please let us know your thoughts on the game, whether it be positives or negative that you noticed—we will make great use of this feedback as we continue development.

Fumihiko Yasuda – Head of Team Ninja, Producer (Koei Tecmo Games)

Playing Final Fantasy IV 30 years ago is what made me aspire towards a career in the gaming industry, so I always hoped that someday I could be involved in the Final Fantasy series. When Team Ninja was working on Dissidia Final Fantasy, I was in charge of a different section, which meant that every night I filled my pillow with tears. I'm truly happy to be involved with a new Final Fantasy, and a title connected to its Origin at that.

Using the feedback that the players provide after playing the trial version, all of us at Team Ninja will work to make this a title that meets the expectations of not only action game fans, but also Final Fantasy series fans around the world!

Hiroya Usuda – Director (Koei Tecmo Games)

I grew up playing Final Fantasy since I was very young, so it is a great honor to have the opportunity to be involved with this title. Furthermore, I'm truly excited that Team Ninja is able to deliver the first full-on action game in the Final Fantasy series to the world.

In this trial version, we've made specific demo-oriented adjustments so that players of all styles will be able to enjoy it—we have incorporated elements such as multiple jobs and weapon types, adjustable difficulty levels, and great replayability. Please let us know your thoughts and feedback once you have given it a try!

Nobumichi Kumabe – Director (Koei Tecmo Games)

I'm glad we were able to announce this new Final Fantasy game—an action game in which Jack, a Warrior of Light(?), lays waste to monsters while being bathed in the spray of their blood. I'm a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series myself, so I'm going to work hard towards release so that this blood-stained Jack can become a hero!

This is a title developed with the characteristic Team Ninja level of difficulty in mind, but once you start getting the hang of it, you'll be able to defeat enemies in an exhilarating and satisfying way. I hope you will replay the trial version many times and try out the various weapons and abilities available.

The difficulty level can be changed as well, so one recommendation I have is to start playing on an easier difficulty and gradually raise it higher for a challenge!

===

A story painted by layers of challenging action gameplay and intense combat. Battles punctuated by iconic actions and abilities from the FINAL FANTASY series, as well as dynamic weapon abilities.
Deplete an enemy's break gauge and deliver a finishing blow with Soul Burst, shattering the crystalized enemy to oblivion.

SWITCH BETWEEN JOBS IN BATTLE
Various weapons such as greatswords, daggers, and spears determine a character's job when equipped.
Acquire new abilities and jobs through a character enhancement system called the Job Tree.

VISUAL CUSTOMIZATION
Equip with weapons and gear to change each character's appearance and abilities in game.

MULTIPLAYER MODE
Experience co-op play in a group of up to 3 players through online multiplayer mode.
Enjoy the main story and side missions with your friends.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Review Thread

Dude you should've told me you made an OT, i would've saved the time i spent cutting & pasting 🤣.

No matter, my game unlocked about 9 hours ago cause i preordered the deluxe edition with the season pass + digital art book and early 72 hours before release access, of course I've played the final demo which is basically the beginning of the game (3 main mission + 3 side missions and weapons tutorial missons) and it carried over my progression, i played the 4th mission which was featured in the 2nd demo a few months past along with the 4th party member Neon (aka the fake Chaos) and i made it to the boss but i stopped to get some sleep before work, can't wait to get back to it, i unlocked the Warrior and Samurai class along with the Knight and White Mage during the demo and their natural ability makes a LOT of difference with tougher enemies and especially the white mage with the bosses with it's protect/shell and cure/regen spells.

Word to new players PLAY THE WEAPONS TUTORIAL MISSIONS! The game doesn't teach you the unique aspects of each weapon and it's move sets outside of these tutorial missions and it makes a HUGE difference especially with something like the stance of the Ronin class and the Katana.

Edit: also try and explore every nook and cranny and you'll be rewarded with loot and more importantly lore/back story bits called the "Fool's Missive", the first one i found was in mission 3 (The Dark Elf's Castle) which basically tells you about why Jack and the party are obsessed with killing Chaos and why the crystals they hold are deep black if they're the four heroes of light.

Locations

Hallowed Massif

A perilous, snow-covered mountain, which seems poised to crumble into an avalanche at a moment's notice. Statues of human figures that appear to be sleeping lie buried within caves, deep in the mountain.

Terra Tortura

A scorched land hanging in the sky. Countless bones protruding from the surface deny a solid foothold. Statues of what appear to be deities have been placed here, and they seem to be giving some kind of power to this land.

This is the shrine of CHAOS. He's here…We just have to hunt him down

The darkness is so thick I can taste it

I've been fairly hyped for this, but I have Elden Ring to keep me busy for a while. I can wait a few months for a sale. Looks like it won't take long, the reviews being what they are.

I mainly just want to fight all the FF monsters.

I don't think releasing another Souls-like so close to Elden Ring was a smart move.

I just want to say fuck Master Tonberries, the sub mission in the 4th area was to kill 3 of these bastards and i took it as an opportunity to level up some of my basic classes and they one shot me even with their basic non Chef Knife attacks, took me an hour to get through that mission.

Those little fuckers were always assholes. I'm not surprised they're annoying in this too. In a way I'm glad.

Oh my god, the cringe. I feel for the team that had to work on the localization of this game. It's like they captured the angst of an early 00's emo teen making anime music videos to Linkin Park tracks and turned it into a video game.

Honestly kind of want to play it just for the ridiculous spectacle.

You're selling me on it tbh

@Komatsu @Rean no Kiseki @Zeta Dragoon did you guys beat the game yet? How is it?
I did, I'm 2 trophies away from the platinum, I love the game, it's flawed of course like any game, i played it on hard, finished every main mission/side mission and I'm at 74 hours played (your mileage may vary on difficulty setting/co-op), like I'd said before if you're interested the game's latest demo (aka trial) let's you play the first few hours of the game (3 main missions and 2-3 sub missions) so i say download it and form your own opinion, the game's entirety is shown in those few hours, both pros and cons.

Also if you've not played FF1 before or have no knowledge of Garland, the Four Fiends, Cornelia and the Lufenians (all from FF1) you'd be missing out on some aspects of the story as that's what's the game's about, a prequel to FF1 hence the Final Fantasy Origin title.

Edit: forgot to mention the game's awesome soundtrack which has original tracks and several motifs/remixes from across the whole franchise much like the areas the missions take place in, here some of my favourites:

First phase is brand new and the second one is a remix of FF1's boss theme, fitting.

Again first boss phase is original and the second is based on Mt Gulag from FF1 which is the dungeon you fight Marilith in.

Motif from the very first dungeon of FF8 the Fire Cavern.

Motif from the Sunleth Waterscape from XIII..

And many more great remixes, but you'll mostly be hearing the main battle theme.

Publisher Square Enix and developer Team NINJA have released a full-length trailer, new information, and screenshots for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin downloadable content "Trials of the Dragon King," which is due out on July 20.

Get the details below.

■ About

The highly anticipated first of three expansions planned for the season pass!

Stranger-of-Paradise-Final-Fantasy-Origin_2022_07-15-22_001.jpg

After countless deaths, countless cycles, a man assumed the mantle of the dark god of chaos and seized the very power of creation for his own.

All this was according to plan—a meticulously orchestrated scheme to shatter the shackles the Lufenians had placed upon the world and free Cornelia from their grasp.

His first task complete, he set the wheels of a new design in motion. Across time eternal, he and his allies would nurture and guide heroes worthy of the title of warriors of light—just as a friend had once guided him and his comrades.

For in the end, it is only the light that can sever the fetters of the past and lead the world to a brighter dawn.

■ Characters

Bahamut

The king that rules over dragonkind, Bahamut sets trials for the brave and awards them titles. Taking an interest in Jack and the others, it lends them its counsel and strength.

Warrior of Light

Warriors of Light who appear in Cornelia. They fight to restore the light to the crystals and save the world.

Stranger-of-Paradise-Final-Fantasy-Origin_2022_07-15-22_007.jpg

■ New Jobs

Summoner

Summoners can use their job action, summon, to call Bahamut into battle. While Bahamut is active, the summoner's MP and max MP will continually decrease. In exchange, the summoner can control Bahamut and gains access to its powerful abilities. In accordance with the amount of maximum MP that has been consumed, Bahamut will be able to use megaflare, gigaflare and exaflare. All of Bahamut's attacks whilst summoned are extremely powerful, with a wide area of effect, making them highly effective when you're surrounded by enemies. Additionally, you can increase the duration of the summon by attacking enemies to restore MP.

Evoker

Evokers can use their job action, evoke, to summon a spirit to aid them in battle. The spirit will automatically attack your foes, and can also unleash special abilities on command. It will provide backup as you fight – for example, blast wave staggers enemies, shackle seals enemy movement, interrupt delays enemy actions and heal restores your HP and the HP of nearby allies.

Pilgrim

Pilgrims can perform their job action, assault hook, which changes the length of the staff and grabs an enemy. Depending on how you wield the staff, you can leap toward the enemy and strike, or draw the enemy in. It all starts with setting up an advantageous situation in battle, for example, by closing in on enemies from a distance or by pulling out a specific enemy from a crowd.

■ New Weapon

Staff

Stranger-of-Paradise-Final-Fantasy-Origin_2022_07-15-22_015.jpg

Staves are striking weapons that can attack enemies over a wide area by adjusting the length of the weapon. During a normal combo, you can perform thrust attacks or gain distance while unleashing an upward attack. The thrust attack closes distance, while the upwards strike increases distance between you and your enemy. This means that you can turn the battle to your advantage by using the strike best suited for the situation.

New Mechanics

New Equipment Category: Accessories

One accessory can be equipped to each battle set. Accessories may grant special abilities that cannot be obtained by weapons or armor. By boosting weaker stats or granting special abilities, accessories add even more options for customizing your equipment. Equipping some accessories even allows you to use specific abilities, such as enemy skills.

Stranger-of-Paradise-Final-Fantasy-Origin_2022_07-15-22_016.jpg

Changing Classes

You can change classes from the job tree screen, under battle settings. Two different classes are available to choose between, each of which can empower certain job actions in different ways—evocation and ultima. Using a rat tail on the class tree screen will allow you to learn new abilities.

Stranger-of-Paradise-Final-Fantasy-Origin_2022_07-15-22_018.jpg

Chaos Equipment

Equipment found while playing on "Hard" or higher difficulties may be imbued with powerful special abilities: chaos. These grant effects such as increased damage against specific enemies, and are stronger than regular special abilities. The higher the difficulty level, the greater the chance to obtain chaos equipment.

Stranger-of-Paradise-Final-Fantasy-Origin_2022_07-15-22_020.jpg

■ Additional Missions

A new difficulty setting, "Bahamut," will be available. On "Bahamut" difficulty, the Bahamut tab will be added to the game menu. The Bahamut tab contains three options: Trials of the Dragon King, Exchange Shop, and Conversations with Bahamut. Complete dragon king trials to reveal new story in Conversations with Bahamut.

Trials of the Dragon

During a trial, you will be forced to fight under a variety of disadvantageous effects, but you will earn dragon treasures once you complete the trial. In addition, raising your trial rank makes it easier to obtain powerful chaos equipment.

Stranger-of-Paradise-Final-Fantasy-Origin_2022_07-15-22_022.jpg

Exchange Shop

Dragon treasures earned in a dragon king trial can be traded for items and equipment at the exchange shop. The exchange shop's stock can be refreshed and clearing a certain number of missions will increase the amount of times you can refresh the exchange shop's stock.

Stranger-of-Paradise-Final-Fantasy-Origin_2022_07-15-22_024.jpg

Conversations with Bahamut

New conversations with Bahamut will be unlocked as you complete dragon king trials. Conversations with Bahamut will unlock new missions and progress the main story.

A season pass with three expansions in total, including the additional mission: "Trials of the Dragon King."

Release Date: July 20, 2022
Price: $24.99
Supported Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC (Epic Games Store)

Additional missions planned as season pass content:

First Round: "Trials of the Dragon King" (July 20, 2022)
Second Round: "Wanderer of the Rift" (coming soon)
Third Round: "Different Future" (coming soon)

I need to go back and finish this. Souls games are all the same and this one doesn't really feel that unique unfortunately despite the FF brand, which is why I dropped it about 15 hours in. However, I am interested a bit in the story so I really should finish it. I'll just put the difficulty on the easiest and blow through the rest of the game, since I heard from the reviewers that at some point the difficulty breaks and the levels become obscenely hard to beat.
