Thread: Steam Deck IOTI These Things, They Take Time
Official Thread
I downloaded that when I first got a deck, but noped out of it immediately when I saw what to took to set up.

It wasn't too bad tbh and runs nicely when it's done, but I might try the other option when the card arrives tomorrow. I suppose I should treat this as an excuse to organise shit a bit more on my deck.

Just poked around with GParted and it showed up there - realised a fix was on. Fsck'd the bastard and now it's working! Phew! Time to cancel my amazon order!

Oliver's back with another in his regular analysis of the most demanding PC titles and the extent to which you can get a playable experience from them on Steam Deck. There's no holds barred here as the Valve handheld tries to take on nightmare games like The Last of Us Part 1, Hogwarts Legacy, Resident Evil 4, Dead Space Remake and even Redfall.

I like how they open by repeating Richard Leadbetters lie about it being a handheld PS4, but then say the games run comparably to the XSS, despite PC ports currently being utter dogshit and struggling to run on even high end rigs.

Also I've got Hogwarts Legacy and Dead Space to run better than they have, with barely any fiddling required.

I can't imagine it would be too difficult tbh given how easy it is to run uplay and ea stuff. I don't use Epic because I'm not a cunt though.

There are a couple routes you can go.

Lutris or Heroic Launcher can add the EGS to your deck, or you can download and install EGS on Desktop mode and add it to your Steam library and launch it through there.

Does anyone know if it's possible to map radial menus to the PS4/PS5 controller?

For example, if I use the Steam Deck I can load a controller config for PCSX2 that brings up a radial menu when I touch the left trackpad. That menu allows me to do things like bring up the pcsx2 settings menu, save state/load state, etc...

In theory, I should be able to map this to the touchpad on the PS4/PS5 controller when playing in docked mode, but damn if I can figure out how to do it.

You should be able to map those buttons in big picture mode.

So I couldn't get the System Shock demo to work a while back - found out the cause. So when you download it on a linux machine (eg a Steam Deck) it downloads a dud 5 byte file. When running it claims it's trying to run a .sh file but that file doesn't exist. Needless to say, no game demo. However, there's a solution. Go to properties in Steam and tell it which compatibility tool to use, pick a version of Proton. That'll force it to download an update, which will be the Windows version, which will work.

Works for me. Taking the console approach of letting developers optimise for a set hardware and only brining out a replacement when it's a significant improvement that won't kill battery life or be bigger numbers for bigger numbers sake is going to make the system last longer, give everyone more reason to upgrade when it does happen and not canablise it's own sales.

With Switch 2 on the horizon, I would also expect a boost in games targeting lower minimum specs to accommodate too, which should boost game compatibility with SD, so an upgrade won't be as necessary for a good few years to come.

Since I am more and more starting to feel fed up with what MS and Sony are doing with their consoles these days, and Nintendo feels to expensive, I finally want to give this thing a shot.

I like quirky games, shorter experiences, indie stuff, also old games, but would love to play the occasional Nintendo Switch game through emulation.

What are your verdicts after using the SD for quite some time now?

It's great! Especially for the things you mentioned.

It is my main platform now. I was against getting an OLED before since I have the regular model, but I use it so much I ordered the OLED last week. It will be here in a few hours. It sounds like it would be perfect for you as it really excels at indies and smaller games. Plus it is the best handheld emulation device out there. It runs AAA games decently too with a mixture of low/medium settings. Since the screen is tiny the lower settings aren't really a big deal. It can hit 40+fps in a a lot of those games which feels nice. I've been looking to move over to PC more since I am also not happy with what MS/Sony are doing.

Is there a trade in program or something? I'm liking the original screen just fine but if there's a way to upgrade to an OLED model without just outright buying one I'd be tempted. The switch OLED screen was a huge upgrade.

No. You would need to sell the old one yourself.

I have the original and got the OLED for Christmas. Upgrade bro. Its worth it.

Wife wants me to buy a family computer for the kids… browsing, typing, multimedia, school stuff like that. I'm angling to get an OLED Steam Deck plus dock since it's cheaper than a desktop or laptop and the kids don't need much power to do their tasks. we haven't made any final decisions. Fingers crossed!

If it is going to be docked you could save a few bucks and get the cheaper LCD one. I hear a fellow who goes by the name ExpandKong is looking to sell one.

If imma spend the money, I'm going OLED. A dock, monitor, m+kb, etc plus the Steam Deck will still be cheaper than a laptop or a PC tower. The only downside as far as I can tell is I won't be getting the absolute max power-per-dollar compared to the other options but that isn't a big concern.

Also she has suggested an Apple computer which I'd rather not get.
