Join Ryo on his journey to become the ultimate martial artist and avenge his father's death. Shenmue the Animation, a Crunchyroll and Adult Swim Original, begins February 5th!

Shenmue debuted first as a video game by SEGA for the Dreamcast on December 29, 1999. Since then, its captivating characters and riveting storytelling. Now over 20 years later, the 13-episode anime adaptation aims to capture the same essence of mystery and thrilling martial arts.

I like the idea of a Shenmue animation, but knowing that by the end of Shenmue 3 the main issue hasn't been resolved sort of kills the hype. Shenmue has a wonderful world, good audio and an interesting story but has an issue with endings. I do hope the animation involves Ryo collecting all the capsule toys though, I never bothered too much with those while playing the original game.

Feels pointless. What's the point of going over stuff that happened in the Dreamcast games, especially when the HD collection exists?
They had a chance to significantly advance the story with Shenmue 3 and they blew it.

Honeslty Shenmue feels like the last property to turn into other forms of media. In the dozens of hours of 3 games maybe 15 minutes worth of traditional storytelling has occurred.

Unless they are completely changing the narrative, this is going to have an ungodly amount of padding and repetition.

Yep. The main draw with Shenmue was its realism and simulation of real life. The story itself is pretty unremarkable. Wouldn't be surprised if the anime introduces magic and supernatural elements and Ryo ends up throwing fireballs like in that awful looking Shenmue Online concept trailer:

Does moving crates around count? It felt quite satisfying in the game just doing tasks and getting paid for it. Perhaps in the anime, Ryu will overcome the obstacles of learning to move the crates in a long training montage, before getting everything right and getting a bonus after a good day. There could also be the chance for all the other workers in the warehouse to have dialogue and share their stories. A whole episode could even be dedicated to winning the first prize in the warehouse race before work...
