Title Lineup Trailer #1

SEGA has announced SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive Mini 2. It will launch on October 27 for 9,980 yen in Japan.

At 120.8mm in width, 32.3mm in height, and 116.5mm in length, the mini console will be even smaller than the original Genesis / Mega Drive Mini. It will feature over 50 SEGA / Mega CD and Genesis / Mega Drive games, including "bonus titles" that were not available for the original consoles (such as Fantasy Zone). The platform supports output resolutions of 720p and 480p.

The first few titles to be confirmed are as follows
A cosmetic Genesis / Mega Drive Tower Mini 2 add-on will also be available for 4,500 yen, which includes a SEGA / Mega CD 2 Mini, mini cartridge for Genesis / Mega Drive title Virtua Racing, mini disc for SEGA / Mega CD title Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Genesis / Mega Drive Mini mounting spacer, and Super 32X Mini mounting spacer.

Additional Fighting Pad 6B controllers will also be available for 2,500 yen.

SEGA also announced the Genesis / Mega Drive Mini 2 live stream schedule, which are all named after subtitles from the Yakuza series:
  • June 3 at 20:00 JST – "The Successor to the Legend" – This was the announcement live stream, which is now over.
  • June 24 at 20:00 JST – "Fulfiller of Dreams"
  • Mid-July – "The Song of Life"
  • Early August – "Whereabouts of Light and Darkness"
  • Late August – "The Place of Oath"
SEGA will host the "Sega New Project Announcement Live Stream" on June 3 at 20:00 JST, the company announced. You will be able to watch it on YouTube, Niconico, and Twitter.

Presenters include Hiroyuki Miyazaki, Yosuke Okunari, and host Misuzu Araki.

"While you may feel a sense of deja vu with the lineup of presenters, please look forward to the announcement," SEGA teased.
As pointed out by Twitter user @Renka_schedule, the lineup of presenters is the same as the lineup from the Genesis / Mega Drive Mini live stream from September 2019, and M2, which ported the games playable on the mini console, retweeted the live stream announcement.

Probable?
The rumored Crazy Taxi/Jet Set Radio GaaS?
Supposed leaked Shin Megami Tensi V for PC?
Possibly the new rumored Etrian Odyssey entry?

Already Known:
Company of Heroes 3
Sonic Frontiers

Possible?
Would not count out a new Alien Isolation, Transformers, Godzilla or Star Wars game.

Skies of Arcadia Remake
Skies of Arcadia 2
Jump Ultimate Stars remastered port or a new game of equal or better quality.
Total Warhammer 40K
Total Warhammer Lord of the Rings.

All I want is virtua fighter 5 pc port and shadow to be playable in the new sonic game.

I think it is probably going to be the Dreamcast Mini. Sega's Yosuke Okunari, who is one of the presenters, mentioned in a Famitsu interview, two years ago, that it is a possibility but it would take more than two years after the release of the Mega Drive Mini (2019).

Unless M2 made a programming miracle, it's something DC Mini related, isn't it? Saturn Mini would be the logical step after a a Megadrive Mini but the emulators aren't just there yet (Yabause based: low-med spect systems can run it ok, compatibility bad; Mednafen based: compatibility very good, no chance on low-med spec system)... and M2 usually makes their own emulators if I'm not mistaken here.

Never played any Saturn games so it would be interesting to see the lineup. Dreamcast was one of my favorites and maybe for the mini console they will re-release Skies of Arcadia again. It would also be nice to have Sakura Wars 3 and Segagaga localized.

Sega has announced its next mini console, which will be based on the Mega Drive 2.

The Mega Drive Mini 2 will include 50 Mega Drive and Mega CD titles, including arcade ports and what Sega describes as a "mysterious new work".

The console was announced during a Japanese Sega live stream, which at the time of writing is still ongoing.

The list of games confirmed for the console so far is as follows:

  • Silpheed (Mega CD)
  • Shining Force CD (Mega CD)
  • Sonic CD (Mega CD)
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls (Mega CD)
  • Popful Mail (Mega CD)
  • Virtua Racing (Mega Drive)
  • Bonanza Bros (Mega Drive)
  • Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive)
  • Thunder Force IV (Mega Drive)
  • Magical Taruruto (Mega Drive)
  • Fantasy Zone (new Mega Drive port)
The original Fantasy Zone was never released on the Mega Drive. The version on the Mega Drive 2 Mini is a new Mega Drive port based on its sequel, Super Fantasy Zone.

The Mega Drive Mini 2 will be released on October 27 in Japan and will cost ¥9,980 ($75). Sega has yet to confirm a western release.

The first Mega Drive Mini was released in 2019 and included 42 games, with the libraries differing per region. It included new ports of Darius and Tetris, which had never been released before.

SEGA CD doesn't have a ton of gems, but there are a handful which are excellent. Bari Arm, Sol Feace, Robo Aleste, and Lords of Thunder are all highly regarded shmups in that community.

Listen to this shit and tell me it doesn't ooze mid-90s nostalgia

This is beautiful but I would love to see a Sega Saturn and Sega DC mini. Still really cool to include the CD games. Sega is doing some cool shit lately.

Also, they should make a mini with the arcade work they've done, like a home model 2 and model 3 minis. One can dream.

There's some expensive games there that aren't available in any other legal form, so that's a plus (Shining Force CD, used, costs more than the whole Megadrive Mini 2 system).
Silpheed crushes real hardware due to the streaming technology used, another plus.
A shame to see the standard Virtua Racing and not the 32X version which has better framerate, more cars, more courses, better gameplay and a short but sweet soundtrack.

Edit:
Just saw this includes an all new port of Fanatsy Zone. Not a lot of interest in seeing that to be honest. It's like Darius 1 on the first system: A nice "what if" scenario but as far removed from real retro gaming reality as it can get: No publisher back in the day would have spent money on a 32 megabit rom cartridge for an old game.

What are the odds of Sega announcing a Mega Drive Mini 3 in a year or two that has 32X games on it?
The Sonic spinoff Knuckles Chaotix could be a selling point due to the brand strength and rarity (another game more expensive than the whole Megadrive 2 Mini) Should have done that in wake of the second Sonic movie that prominently features Knuckles to be honest.

I also don't know why the fuck they don't re-release it for modern systems as a downloadable title. They could even include it as a bonus in the Sonic collection.

I'm note sure myself. Making an emulator costs money and they have very few marketable titles such as Star Wars 32X or Chaotix (no one will buy Virtua Fighter 32X or Space Harrier 32X with better versions out there), but that's just speculation..

the game at 29:38 looks awesome.
That's Silpheed, and what looks like giant polygon models are actually movie files streamed to the system, which was quite an impressive feature back then.

They could just use the emulators available on the web and call it a day hehe

Description says it's purely decorative without moving parts :(
At first I thought this was an indication for 32X games to be included, but there was a similar decorative version of the first Megadrive Mini available as well

(scrolling down quite a bit is required))

Yep, like the addons for the first one.

It would cost way, way more if it actually played discs.

I've got most of the games I wanted over the course of the last 20 years but jesus, buying used games is no fun anymore.

Not much of post, so can I shill some more for Shining Force CD, perhaps the highlight of this mini console.

4 scenarios, two are completely redrawn version of the first two Shining Force Gaiden games made for Game Gear. An all new intro. Sountrack remade using high quality orchestra samples, an all new third scenario with new enemies and some of the best humor in the series, a fourth scenario that is also all new and basically a long challenge battle.
This is how remakes are done. This should be in best remakes lists all over the net. The gaming press should have been all over this back in the day. Sucks it was on such an unpopular system.

Can anyone imagine how amazing it would be to see the third Gaiden Game, Final Conflict, also included, ported by M2? Up to this day it's a Game Gear exclusive. Final Conflict takes places after Shining Force 1 and ties part 1 and 2 together. Obviously this isn't going to happen but one can always dream.
