Thread: Ron Gilbert is officially creating a new Monkey Island game

Love the honesty he is throwing down.

Sounds a lot like the initial reactions were not what he expected.
Return to Monkey Island may not be the art style you wanted or were expecting but it's the art style I wanted.

It's ironic that the people who don't want me to make the game I want to make are some of the hard core Monkey Island fans. And that is what makes me sad about all the comments.

Return to Monkey Island is an incredible rollercoaster. Get on and have some fun or stomp out of the amusement park because it's not exactly the rollercoaster you wanted.

Sorry, but that art style looks awful. I'll admit I've never played any of the Monkey Island games, and I still wouldn't if it looked like THAT.

I know they went with a cartoony look later on, but I much prefer the art style from the original release of the first game.

Added to my wish list!

Art style is perfectly fine to me. Having been playing the series since origin, I have learned not to get too attached to any style. I thought Curse was the absolute peak (by miles and miles) and they went away from that. So no matter what they did/do its a disappointment... but not in anyway shape or form a deal breaker.

I am here for the wit, story and puzzles. As long as those deliver, this will be a gem.

I see potential problems there tbh. The latter will presumably be impacted by the industry-wide trend towards dumbing down (even Monkey Island wasn't immune with the interaction coin replacing the word list), the story will have to pass the sensitivity readers and wit... this is 2022 and jokes are simply not allowed, or at least not funny ones. While Monkey Island was never especially edgy and indeed leaned into the strong female (Elaine) and pathetic male (Guybrush) trope that still might not be enough to save it from being completely humourless, and that would be a fate worse than death for such a great series of games.

I'm worried but I'll keep it positive here since I already shat all over it on GAF, there just isn't a lot to get excited about.

What I think they should do to shut up haters is show a few minutes long scene/puzzle so we can see what it plays and is written like. Thats what I need to reassure me it won't be average/bad.

Thats what I'm worried about though, where they'll go too far into that because its the trend right now, so he'll just a bit toooo stupid and Elaine will save the day completely or something. My head hurts too much right now to remember whether he actually ever did get any glory in the old games, I think maybe he often won by luck ultimately but at the same time the interim puzzles he came out looking decently capable.

Its just that sardonic and/or dry humor seems to be hard for writers these days, it ends up being "idgaf" humor or that sort of thing where things are decontructed/made minimal but they didnt actually start with something tropey/complicated and deconstruct it, they just shortcut to the ending and thats not the same imo.

I don't know. That doesn't look charming or.... good? Don't like the style. Not at all.

I'm with you. Imho this artstyle feels so lazy and cheap. Looks like every other cartoon nowadays. In comparison to something like cuphead this looks like dogshit.

I'll wait for the reviews. Monkey island was awesome though (1 and 2)

There's an art style I'd love to see more of in games. I love Cuphead's 1930's style animation.

Hell, you don't even need traditional cel shaded animation like the developers used in the game to achieve the look. Netflix's The Cuphead Show! (which I hear is pretty decent) achieved a near identical result using digital animation.

Using the Curse art style would have generated so much more hype and probably would have been a good business decision. Disappointing that they're not going that route, but not a deal-breaker.
Curse artstyle is probably expensive as hell. They had infinite Star Wars money back then.

So Ron Gilbert is pissed at all the negative reception the game has been receiving.

And guess who chimes in defense of Ron against those darn dirty gamers? The Cuckmann himself!

Seriously, these two deserve each other with how they've shitted on the fanbase that made them a success.

"Search for quality entertainment!" *pfft* Yeah right.

Also, a horse armor DLC joke? Really? A gag from 2006 is the best you can come up with to hide the fact that the art style still looks like shit? The creators must be really desperate for any sort of coverage because they know how much they alienated whatever small fan base they had.

The art style was pretty off putting when I first saw it but in the latest trailer it has kind of grown on me. I'm still willing to give this game a try. Hopefully there is no woke shit in it.

In the same boat. I will give it a try - if the music, humour and characters are good I'll be happy. Was hoping for a Thimbleweed art style but ah well.

According to IMDb somebody else does LeChuck's voice. Earl Boen seems to be fully retired. This sucks.

I want to love it and accept the art style. But god damn do I hate that Guybrush.

Are the old games worth playing? I saw yesterday you could get 3 or 4 games for 99p total lol.
When I was a kid my sister's bf at the time would play Escape From Monkey Island late at night. I would wake up to use the bathroom or get some water or something, and see him playing it on occasion. The original one was around our house too, I saw a copy of it near our computer. I can't say whether or not it's quality but he had excellent taste in games and was the one who essentially introduced me to the Zelda series

Adventure games come from a period without internet access for the masses or even enthusiasts A lot of the fun playing adventure games came from getting absorbed into the game world and figuring out solutions to the
obscure puzzles (which admittedly could get frustrating, especially when playing localized versions that didn't account for the use of language based humor for some puzzles).

These are massive time burners.

In today's environment with solutions just a few clicks away, and games being very competitive, an different mindset is required to enjoy these games. I've kind of lost it, but from the time I still had it I can safely say, at least early Monkey Island games were fun and are definitely recommended.
