Yeah I mean even if its the greatest game ever surely the art style would stop it reaching the upper echelons. I'm skeptical as well, interested on reading people's opinions.

As much as I dont like the art style, there are better than average odds Ill pick it up this week and play this weekend. I just cant help myself when it comes to Monkey Island.

If it was one of my favorite franchises I must admit it wouldn't stop me from giving it a go either.

So I grabbed it. The game right off the bat throws me a curve ball. You are given two difficulties. "Casual Mode" or "Hard Mode" Casual sounds too easy/lame.... but hard sounds hard. Where did normal go? FML I think I will just go Hard and Curse my life.

Edit: I know I am only 10-15 min in.... but this feels super weird. It feel like way more modern than the previous games. The kids in the beginning are super swick. Their banter is something from a cartoon in the 2000's. Again, It feel weird. It sure better change tone fast or this might be a meh experience.

Played a bit more tonight. Once you get past the part as Guybrush's kid it picks up. And getting to hear the Loom spiel again was awesome. Art style for the environment actually works pretty well and makes it little easier to see object. (well maybe), but I still hate it for the characters. Voice acting and dialogue trees are great. Some MI quality witty banter indeed!

That's good to hear. Have you seen any signs of woke shit?

Too early to tell. They replaced the three Pirate Leader on Melee Island with a new younger trio, a black man and two white women. But they also throw shade at them. A couple people talk about how they are terrible, but they have lots of money to spend so they tolerate them. Not sure if that is a reference to the current state of games and bending the knee to the woke for sales or if it's just a coincidence.

Will play some more tonight and see where it goes.

Ok, have put a few more hours into it. I don't think its woke. There are definitely some douche characters, but most of them get ripped on or used as the tool they are. Like the stuck up black cunt locksmith. She needs to be punched in the pune. But she is also retarded and helps you break into locked things. And the Museum curator is brilliantly funny. All his exhibit items are from previous MI games but has his facts wrong (which are based on research!) and will not accept Guybrush's corrections. Made me chuckle.

Overall its pretty good. The puzzle loop is pretty tight and keeps you connecting the dots. I am glad I did hard mode, its not that hard. Anything less would feel a bit lame. Have not got stuck yet or resorted to using the in game 'hint book'. And for the next three puzzles I can already see how the string will go (more or less) and just need to figure out a couple loose ends to set the dominos in motion.

That sounds pretty good, thanks for the impressions! I want to play it but I can't get over the character design. I watch 10 sec of gameplay and feel the urge to punch somebody.

Tbh the art style doesn't bother me too much. I would have liked an evolution of 1 and 2's style but I don't mind this. After seeing impressions here, I'll probably pick it up. I could do with something different.

The art direction sucks balls for most characters (some it works). But IMO the big gain by the style is the way Guybrush moves when sped up. So when you double click to make him move at twice the speed, it looks pretty good. The whole "floaty arms' design works well. It makes it feel more natural. And when scanning for items it is clear what is/isn't interactive due to the clean/simple deign.

So its 100% a step down from Curse, but it its not as terrible as it looks and is honestly better than Escape.

Finished the game. It's pretty good and totally worth playing if you enjoy the series. A bit scaled down and indie compared to more cinematic previous titles, but the dialogue and humour are authentic Monkey Island.

I think it's almost impossible to find anything without pressing TAB all the time. But using it is part of the game so it's fine.

Publisher Devolver Digital and developer Terrible Toybox will release Return to Monkey Island for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on November 8, the companies announced. It will also be available via Xbox Game Pass.

Return to Monkey Island first launched for Switch and PC via Steam on September 19.

He explained he didn't have PC then. And Escape is cool.

To each, their own. Escape is the low point in the series for me. Going from point/click to actual movement felt terrible. The visuals were also super disappointing coming from Curse.

I don't disagree with it, but as far as writing, voice acting and puzzle design goes the game is fine.
