Report: The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remake Is Real; First Gameplay Improvement Details Revealed

Key Takeaways

  • A remake of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is in development by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5.
  • The game is confirmed to be fully remade, implying significant changes compared to the original.
  • Gameplay improvements include reworks to Stamina, Stealth, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and HUD.
Back in September 2023, a Bethesda release schedule was leaked, mentioning Dishonored 3, a new DOOM game, and even a remake/remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. While Bethesda has yet to officially announce the Oblivion remake, reliable leaker Nate The Hate mentioned it again this month in his latest podcast stating that it's set to be released in June of this year.

Today, we can confirm the project is indeed real. A mistake made by a former Virtuos employee has provided us with not just confirmation of its existence, but also insights into gameplay improvements set to be implemented to the original game.

A Return to Cyrodiil in Unreal Engine 5

The information comes from the website of a former Virtuos employee, whose name we won't disclose for privacy reasons, and who worked on the game from 2023 to 2024. Before this, the individual worked on games such as Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, Call of Duty: Warzone and more.

A description of the project provided on the site confirms that the title is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and will be "fully remade," hinting at significant changes in this reimagining compared to the original game. Brief descriptions of six gameplay systems that will be reworked are also provided: Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and HUD.

For the Blocking system, ideas to improve it were taken from Souls-like and "ACT" games (we're not sure which games this refers to, but our guess is the Assassin's Creed Ezio Trilogy), as the original system was considered too "boring" and "frustrating." The Sneak icons are now highlighted in the improved Sneak system, and the damage calculation methods were reworked. The stamina system was modified to be less frustrating for the player, making the knockdown that occurs when stamina is depleted more difficult to activate through changes in calculation methods. The HUD was changed to make it easier to understand and more aesthetically appealing to young players. Hit reactions were also added to improve the response to damage inflicted on the player and NPCs. Finally, Archery was improved to make it more playable and modern in both third and first-person viewpoints.

These pieces of information dispel any doubt that this is merely a port to another graphic engine like Grove Street Games did with the "Definitive Edition" of the old Grand Theft Auto trilogy. Instead, it will be a full-fledged remake that reworks everything seen in the original title. These doubts make sense if we recall an old list of Microsoft vs. FTC documents from 2022, which listed an "Oblivion Remaster" that we assume eventually transformed into the remake.

With the Xbox Developer Direct Event set to take place on January 23, and Microsoft teased in the announcement image that it will feature the participation of an unannounced "brand new game," some might be wondering if this remake is the game being alluded to. Unfortunately, that won't be the case, as some insiders claim it won't be shown at the event. This was collaborated with our own sources, who also said The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake won't be at the upcoming Xbox direct show airing January 23. However, if we follow NateTheHate's report stating that the game is planned for release in June this year, we shouldn't have to wait long for an official announcement.

No, fuck that. Keep the cheese. They fucked with the voices and music in Demon's Souls remake and made it worse.

Oh, right, that Demon Souls Remake was so terrible! :ROFLMAO:

I understand the logic/desire for preservation, but I also think it can go too autistically far sometimes. When everything else looks and plays 100 times better, but it's still some 2004ish era audio recordings for the dialog, that is just a stupid mismatch that only the extreme minority would genuinely want.

I didn't say it was terrible, you dingus. I said they made it worse. Worse than great does not equal terrible. Do this again and you're getting the dreaded Rear Admiral.

If I have the PS3 version and the PS5 version in front of me, I'm playing the PS5 version.

So I hope this Oblivion remake is "worse" than the original too :ROFLMAO:

The PS5 version should just stop working after 30 hours, for authenticity's sake.

Seriously though, I wouldn't exactly call this promising news. I'll tell these devs the same I did Square Enix with Star Ocean 2.

"Don't fuck up."

Honestly, I'm with you. I get it that Studios can't employ hundreds of voice actors, but at the same time, it's quite jarring to have a familiar voice coming out of a different character. In my KCD replay hearing some random NPC talking with Fritz's or Peshek's voice takes me out of the experience. Certainly, I wouldn't want to see everything AI voiced, however at the same time, using AI to change things up a bit to add more uniqueness to every character's voice wouldn't go amiss.

Anyway, curious to see what they do with Oblivion in terms of bringing it up to date.

Options for toggling level scaling would be huge as it's one of the most frequent criticisms of Oblivion, that and your characters lack of agency for the main story.

I'm not betting on if they are replacing male and female gender with body Type A and B, this industry absolutely can't help themselves.

I loved this game. I would definitely be open to buying this and doing a good 100+ hour re-play.

Skyrim always got the love and attention but I much preferred Oblivion. Better world, map, quests and factions for me.

I absolutely adore Oblivion, it was my first Bethesda game and it's still my favorite. That sountrack is god tier. Day 1 for me, I'm incredibly excited to learn more about the remake when they finally announce it.

Excited but my BS detector is going off too, as to my knowledge UE5 doesn't support the large world constant persistent object system that the creation engine does. Unless they somehow built out an entirely custom branch of UE5 for this, which seems like a hell of a lot of work for a remake.

I know jack shit about it, but is it possible that the age of the game puts it in a position where the number of objects being tracked is within the boundaries of the engine's capabilities?

If a POS engine like Creation can do it then UE5 can do it, and they've probably had people experimenting with UE like everyone else to see how viable it is.

I wouldn't assume things like that, if UE or other engines could easily do this stuff they would have abandoned the pos creation engines awhile ago. It does some things that other engines just haven't put the time into.

Well for one thing I didn't say it would be easy, very little is easy when it comes to game development. There's also the matter that it's a lot easier dealing with the devil you know than expending time, manpower and money to learn something completely new. The possibility of this being outsourced to an external team that has significant amounts of experience with UE versus their normal in house teams.

Unreal Engine can do a fuckton more than people give it credit for, especially with the appropriate amount of TLC.

The same people who've been bitching about how Bethesda should abandon Creation Engine for years are now bitching about Unreal, and how there will likely not be much of a modding scene.

Hopefully it at least allows for mods that fix the dumb shit like retarded inventory systems. I was never one of those "unlimited mana one-hit kills ez mode mods" guy like @regawdless

On one hand, it's a remake, you can't change as much as making a sequel, also they're most likely all autistic so maybe they're good programmers.

On the other hand, they weren't necessarily hired for their skill, and will also find any way at all to inject there ideology into this remake.

Also get ready for a glut of pink and blue coloring for the remake

4 minutes after posting and whatever you posted was already nuked.

So what are we thinking. That this remake is the filler content til the next ES is done? Keeping the brand alive and buying them another year or two. Kinda like Blizzard did with Diablo 2 Resurrected for Diablo IV?
