What would you rate the components that make up the game or the game overall? You can copy and paste them if you'd like or rate the game any way that you'd prefer to rate it. But I am curious about how great this game is. Some gamers praise this game as a top FF game, while others say it is just alright. How great is FFXIV?

Story - /10
Exploration - /10
Overworld - /10

There we go. Curious how nobody even cares to talk about this game, I know it didn't sell jack and put Square Enix in a panic but how great is this game? A true reflection of its quality?

Wait are you talking about 16 or 14
16, 14 has proven itself. This latest one has such mixed reviews that I can't even tell where it truly falls. Some say it's GOAT material, some say it's top five in the FF series, some call it okay it's alright like it's pretty good, then we have some like you who will critique it harshly and say it's lacking. It's not like 15 where mostly everyone was in agreement that the game was mediocre

6/10 at best, my feelings say to give it a 0/10.

Underwhelmed and lacking a sense of adventure. The brutal and hopeless Game of Thrones like tone make the game difficult to endure. You never get to visit any of the major cities. The excitement of finding a new town, only to find all the inhabitants gone or massacred.

Most disappointing game since Mass Effect 3. Not what I expected from the team behind XIV, which has one of the coolest worlds, nations, lore, job systems and settings in all gaming.

I didnt get very far before getting distracted by something else entirely, and Id purchased a PS5 primarily to play FF16

While I do plan to revisit eventually, I can earnestly admit that it solidified my understanding that Final Fantasy games just werent made for me any longer. Peak era was 6 through 10. Think I even enjoyed 15 more tbh.

I was on board for it at first too because the game looked grim and serious. Then the trailers came rolling out year after year and was thinking, "FFXVI looks like it offers nothing but war" and then it was solidified. It was all gloom, war, and the more lighthearted portions in previous entries appeared to have been committed entirely. So my hype for the game turned into uncertainty and eventually it just deflated. I thought there was going to be this expansive world or even universe to explore and some grand war of epic proportions maybe even involving another planet. Then I heard the overworld was linear and that was the last straw for me, decided to hold off on playing

I don't have scores, but I played the demo (which is like the first 2+ hours of the game) and was completely sold on buying it. The story starts out so well. I was really surprised by the level of quality when it came to dialog and voice acting and even just the pacing of the scenes compared to their other games.

In something like FF7 Remake, grunts and sighs count as full sentences and it lingers awkwardly on the character's dead-eyed face for a delayed moment before cutting to the next character who then just giggles awkwardly. FF16 is a massive step up from that. The combat system is fun enough as well. It has weaknesses but I have no idea why I didn't come back to it yet. I'm pretty far in.

I'll definitely check it out once it hits PC or falls to like $20 on PS5, but while I liked the demo for the most part, I wasn't in the mood for the dark and gloomy atmosphere that felt like it was trying to copy Game of Thrones over 10 years too late.

With most games this happens with me. It's probably a combination of wanting to savor what's left knowing you're deep in the game, with feelings of whether you want the game to end or not; to prolong it. It's not so easy sometimes deciding. Every single Final Fantasy game I played, I kind of wanted it to end and I didn't at the same exact time. It's kind of a frustratingly stupid fork in the road that probably presents itself to gamers who like to do and see everything is my take on it

Story - 6.5/10
Exploration - 2/10
Overworld - 3/10
Music - 7/10
Combat - 2/10
Inventory - 3/10
Difficulty - 2/10

I think it's a game that 'could' have been very good. I actually like the characters and a lot of the story in the game. I think it was worthy of being wrapped up in a better game than we got.

Exploration wise, the game is an A to B simulator. Exploration hardly exists. The game has you revisiting the same spots throughout the entire experience for lacklustre rewards.

The overworld doesn't exist. Imagine a fighting game, the overworld is almost like the stage select screen. You choose your destination and the game loads your mini map. So it is essentially fast travel into mini maps. These maps have the same interactivity of a game like the original Devil May Cry. It is so limited in design and interactivity. They design it to look nice, but there is nothing you can do but travel the corridors of these areas.

The music was serviceable. From memory, I liked it. The less impressive aspects of the game have made the experience forgettable.

Combat seems interesting at first. But it quickly descends into a skill-less pattern that I remember comparing to 'Cookie Clicker' of all things. Mash your attacks, special bar fills, execute your special moves with that button, then back to mashing attacks until those specials fill again. No thought required, 95% of it almost feels on rails.

Inventory? Do you mean phoenix downs and potions? I can't remember needing anything else. Gear wise, you complete a story section and the entire gear layout changes. You know when new gear will be available simply because you complete a part of the story and return to base. It is always available from the same vendors throughout the entire game. There are 15 or so examples of the exact same pattern happening throughout the game, and that is the inventory in the game.

Difficulty wise, mini maps and simple combat. Corridors. Cumbersome boss fights. Some look good in places, but as much that looks good, the same quantity looks a spectacular mess.

Despite liking parts of the story, there was much more wrong with this game than right. I found it very disappointing and I was glad to be done with it when I finished. I immediately deleted it from my PS5 despite having a very large 2nd storage drive with no space limitations.

My main questions for the next numbered FF game will be to do with how different it is from this game. I hope the formula used in this game was a one off - or the series becomes one of very little importance to me.

I found Tales of Arise to be hugely better than this. And that game had aspects I didn't enjoy. But it has so much more going for it than FF16.

Story can't remember/10 -
Exploration 2/10
Overworld 3/10
Music can't remember/10
Combat 6/10
Inventory 0/10
Difficulty 1/10

Largely agree with @Dr. Farnsgoth. I didn't even remember the story anymore. It's about destroying crystals I guess and for me it felt like after titan it should've ended but it dragged on and on. Liked the graphics and the combat was okay imo but nothing that wows you. Inventory I don't know. I just upgraded the best weapon/armor and it was enough to finish the game.

I liked The additional monster hunter side quests where you have to kill a special monster but it didn't kept me entertained enough to kill all of them. So I killed like the first 5 or 6 and then stopped because I just wanted to finish the main game.

Overall 5/10 don't worth your time.

Man you people are weird. Who the fuck cares about "exploration" or overworld. Inventory, get the fuck out of here. And difficulty? Why would I enjoy a hard game, it's meant to be enjoyable. The only criteria are the story and if I enjoyed myself. And I did enormously. The Rising Tide DLC on the other hand was a big turd and left me pissed off.

Loved some parts, the boss battles are some of the best on the series.

Has some of the best music in the series.

Graphics were well done, loved the art direction.

Main character wasn't an feminine male.

And the story at its best is great.

But

The gameplay felt like a lesser version of a DMC game, also the enemies felt spongy sometimes, making combat repetitive.

Lack of a party was a bit sad, but understandable with the gameplay.

The setting was well done, but was lacking anything grand, too many small hamlets.

Side quest, were mainly fetch quest and go from point A to B, a bit boring.

Its a shame, iterating on this game, you could make the best FF game ever, but considering the budget and sales, its never going to happen

I'm glad you enjoyed it, but if you can't discern what makes it enjoyable then who is going to be able take your posts about this game discussion seriously? This thread is about rating the game accurately in regards to how great it truly is and one of the ways to do that is to consider the sum of its parts. Analyzing the components that make up the game. I would say I even left out some categories, such as artstyle, and sound or sound effects. It's fine if you don't care to rate the game, but all these categories matter in games

I completely disagree. Like add a category of LGBTBBQ+ representation, feminism category while at it.

Dude, you can hardly disagree on this lol, those categories exist in virtually every RPG we play. What would you have to say about FFXVI if the story was was the GOAT but the developers chose to use camels instead of humans, the sound track was made by William Hung, graphics or artstyle looked like Pitfall on the Atari, overworld was as barren as Superman 64, the inventory or items you get and the management system of those items was just about collecting and storing cans of fish paste, and all you had to do to beat the game was walk forward and mash buttons? Would you still have enjoyed the game? I doubt you would

This is worse than humoring FactsAreDead tbh, even he came with a small bit of substance in his whiny ass posts. I didn't make this thread to argue with a drunk homo, so either articulate yourself or get the fuck out

I played for a few hours then i dropped it. I enjoyed the big monster battles but the regular combat wasn't as enjoyable imo. Side missions weren't as enjoyable as i hoped either. I'll give it another chance in the future it just wasn't able to hold my interest.

Play main story and skip non essential side missions, it will go from a 6/10 game to a 7.5/8 out of 10.

Story: 5/10

Overworld: 5/10

Combat: 7/10
Inventory: 3/10
Difficulty: N/A

You have some weird ass categories OP, inventory? I mean i guess I know what you're talking about but is it worthy of its own category, probably not. Where's the graphics category, the presentation category? I put N/A for difficulty because you can choose it, plus there's accessories that make it even easier if you decide to use them, plus i don't know what constitutes a high score for difficulty? does 10 mean ultra difficult or just the right amount of difficulty.

The fact that I played this soon after Tales of Arise probably didn't fare in FF16's favor as I feel like Tales of Arise, which has a very similar story, ended up having both a better story (with more interesting twists) and better combat.

7/10. I had fun with the game, but the combat is mostly brain dead and the story kind of fell off towards the end third of the game. It also had the least amount of customization I have ever seen in an RPG.

People just want a Final Fantasy which reminds them of the games which made them love the FF series to begin with. Seems like the developers want the series to become something more/different.

Dont fix what aint broken tbh
I think a lot of the gaming industry suffers from this. The older fans want experiences that remind them of their childhood, and young consumers are utterly uninterested in those types of games. The problem is the young consumers aren't even there on the platform, they're on tablets and phones.

Now all you're doing is turning off the gamers that are still there for you.

Inventory entails the system that shows all your items, how they're kept or organized, maybe if the game is extremely detail oriented you get descriptions of each item, where to find it, other valuable information such as hints or suggestions, recipes, etc. Interface matters for a lot as well because who wants to look at an ugly menu showcasing what you have? People want an easy on the eyes, simple, yet pleasing interface that will display everything with ease. Take the game EarthBound for example. It has an excellent inventory system for its time. Fun to look at, fun to buy, the items were interesting, items were also valuable in many situations and especially for survival, you have your younger sister and others iirc who would store your items if needed. Inventory is a big part of RPGs so why wouldn't the category be considered? Like if I asked you how many hours did you spend looking at and considering your inventory when preparing for battles, healing during battles, preparing for advancement past dangerous areas and the adventure ahead, considering how best to adapt and strengthen your character(s) it would probably be a few hours of time that added up right?

There are other significant categories worth rating too, I agree with you there. Categories such as graphics or I guess artstyle same thing almost, and then there's lore, sound effects, pacing, characters, controls, etc.

If a game receives a ten out of ten in difficulty, I would consider that game challenging right out the gate and it remains challenging, thoroughly so, throughout the entire course of the game. Could be the perfect amount of difficulty or difficulty that causes the player to die plenty of times, rage even after failure, get stuck at certain spots, all these things. I prefer for games to be very challenging. Even if the mechanics are somewhat janky and cause frustration that's fine by me. Better than being easy and mindless imo. It's all subjective

If you love the game of thrones deep lore you would love this game. The story lost me after a while. I ended up b lining the whole thing half way through. I wonder if I am getting jaded on voice acting these days. I prefer to read it quicker than they speak.

The combat is ok, but I just don't like the combat that square is creating. It looks amazing but so much is going on on the screen that my old age eyes can't handle. On top of that it's the type of combat where you you get hit by unavoidable attacks which sometimes cancel and waste your guages. I hate this. So you just blast through combos and hit dogge and counter every so often.

There isn't too much exploration, which is something that square has lost over the years. Maybe that's just a result of what modern gaming has become. There is no longer any mystery of "what is that thing?" "How do I activate that?" "What does that do?" I miss these elements of the older rpgs.

Clive is a legend though. Easily best protag square has created in a long time and his voice actor does a great job.

Music is ok. There is one combat song that has an epic crescendo in it. I don't remember much more.

The eikon battles bored the shit out of me. I thought that was a waste of time.

I still think it's a worthwhile gaming experience though. I seem to be slamming it a bit, but it is a good game. It's a 7.5 for me.
