In descending order from best to worst:

Aliens
T2
Bladerunner 2049
Winter Soldier
Two Towers
Dune 2
Empire Strikes Back
Maverick
Godfather 2
Dark Knight
Toy Story 2
Dawn of the Apes

They're all pretty great mind.

Haven't seen enough to rank them all. But...Blade Runner 2049 surprisingly is my pick.

I can get behind that pick. I think I'd probably go with Aliens as my No1 pick, with BR2049 in a close second, ESB third (great sequel, but the franchise went to dogshit after it). Godfather Part 2, again though pity Coppola flubbed the 3rd film. TTT was great, but honestly, I haven't watched the LOTR films in years, and I didn't like RoTK all that much.

Dune Part 1 was awesome, but I do have issues with Part 2, and although I'm looking forward to watching it again, I still maintain it would have been a much better move to make a High Budget HBO series that could capture the rich complexity of the Book, versus excise a lot of storyline aspects.

As for the rest, I don't have strong opinions. T2 was great for the effects, but some of the cheesy aspects kind of irked me.

Especially since the original was one of my favorites, and I avoided 2049 for years because I never thought it could hold up to the original, only for it to surpass it in my eyes.

I hear you. When it was first announced, especially with Ridley Scott attached I was pretty hesitant given he has demonstrated time and again (I'm looking at you Protheus esp) that he's only as good as the script and that naturally was a huge concern. However when he decided to make Alien: Covenant instead I was kind of relieved and DV stepping up was a solid move as he had a great track record and didn't disappoint.

T2 by a landslide for me. That movie set the precedent for the possibility of a sequel far surpassing an already great OG. While I enjoyed the new blade runner, it doesn't hold a candle next to the original. I don't consider empire a sequel rather I look at those as a whole trilogy with empire obviously being the best. Don't remember any of the alien movies it's been so long. And never saw any dune movie which I need to correct. That was a carpenter flick if I'm not mistaken? That dude shits gold. In fact thing 2 should've made this list.

Soundrack for the OG is just too good to be surpassed IMO.

I know I'm in the minority but as someone who recently watched the first two Godfather films, I like the original quite a bit more.

Empire Strikes Back is the golden standard for sequels. For Aliens, Godfather Part 2, even Two Towers and T2, these are all movies that either changed genres or twisted the structure so it makes comparing the two difficult. Empire Strikes Back though? It stayed true to what the original was and made it better in every way.

Top Gun

The rest are pretty average or subpar. (Dune I have not seen)
You thought Terminator 2: Judgement Day was subpar? I'd argue that LoTR: The Two Towers is up there with the best of any second film in a trilogy

As I said in the big movie face off… it's cringe as fuck. 10year old me loved it. Adult me thinks it kinda sucks. Production is an improvement over the original, but that's more a factor of budget not quality. And for me the LoTR films decline with each installment. Fellowship was fantastic, two towers was meh and RotK was hard to watch.
