PlayStation 5 will outsell Xbox Series X/S consoles two-to-one this year, data and analytics firm Ampere Analysis has predicted.

Ampere research director Piers Harding-Rolls has forecast 18 million sales for Sony's console in 2022 and nine million sales for Microsoft's systems.

However, he expects Switch to be the year's leading console with 21 million sales.

"It looks like the availability of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles is going to improve slowly over the year and our expectation is that Sony will outsell Microsoft two-to-one," said Harding-Rolls.

"But actually the biggest selling console in the market is going to be Nintendo Switch at 21 million units, and that will be driven by demand for the new Nintendo Switch OLED."

Sony claimed last July that PS5 had become its fastest selling console ever after topping 10 million sales globally just under a month faster than the PS4 managed.

While supply issues have negatively impacted sales, more recently the company said it remained hopeful of hitting its annual PS5 shipment target of 14.8 million units this fiscal year, a feat that would see it best PS4's performance during the same stage of that console's lifecycle.

The company has also said it intends to ship more than 22.6 million PS5 consoles during its next fiscal year beginning in April 2022. If achieved, it would beat a 24-year-old console sales record set by the original PlayStation.

Xbox Series X/S systems continue to sell faster than any previous generation of Microsoft consoles, the company's head of gaming claimed this month. Nintendo said in November that Switch had shipped 92.87 million units since its launch in early 2017.

I mean, yeah? Probably?

There's a reason MS are buying up massive amounts of the gaming industry, although it's still to be seen if that reason is to become a third party publisher, or to 'win' by virtue of paying to stop people being able to buy games on the platform they want to.

They just announced they are making PS4s because they can't make PS5s. They can't even manufacture 2-1. Analyst is a dummy
Even if the PS4 thing were true, which Sony has denied (see above), that has nothing to do with their being able to make twice as many PS5's as XSS/X's.

It absolutely makes sense Playstation would be a higher priority customer to manufacturers and chip suppliers than Xbox, because they have a proven track record of selling massively more.

Why would suppliers give both companies equal amounts of production line time and component parts, when all their prior experience tells them Playstation will sell far more reliably than Xbox? Especially since the XSS has been so consistently in stock, in a time when these consoles are massively in demand, because supply has already apparently exceeded demand for that version of the current Xbox?

Even if that story was true, 1M less PS5s sold in the year than they had hoped to manufacture wouldn't preclude a 2:1 sales lead over the Xbox.

My point is there's still an ongoing shortage of parts so I don't know about 2 to 1 if manufacturing can't keep up. Otherwise yeah I'd agree, the PS5 would easily outsell the Xbox.

I don't think MS give a shit tbh. They're not interested in unit sales, they're interested in Gamepass growth. I expect them to promote the S as the affordable gateway model to build out Gamepass in the long term.
