Thread: PS5 sold in 7.8 million units as of March 31, 2021
Sales
1: People were ready for next-gen
2: The PS4/PS5 comeback from the early PS3 days is incredible. Sony kind of recaptured PS1/PS2 mania
3: These systems cost near $1000 on average due to current market conditions

As I said earlier for Xbox, two manufacturers running away with every kind of record, and a third really improving their fortunes, is a big vote of confidence in gaming right now. A vote of confidence for traditional gaming, traditional controllers (and not phone touch screens), all of it.

Kind of crazy considering the semiconductor shortage that's plaguing the world... though not to poke any fun at it, I do wonder how many units scalpers were able to get.

Honestly, the shortages are probably helping sales as much as everyone being stuck at home.

Nothing like an already hot item being hard to find, to drive sales through the old fear of missing out.

It's interesting how the PS4 sold a significantly lower number of units than the PS2, but has already sold more software. It goes to show that the measure of success has changed when it comes to unit sales. You can make way more money off of less units than in the past.

Services, digital sales, way less used games, less piracy.

It's a gold mine.

It seems archaic to think back on the days when the only revenue source was from selling copies of discs.

Sony and others would put a piece of hardware out there that costs them money when you buy it and then hope you bought enough discs for it that they profited in the long run. Fucking crazy shit! lol

Now it's just profit at every turn.

PS5 with a solid number despite the shortages. Wasn't expecting otherwise honestly

47.6 million PS+ hostages, up from 41.5 million at this time last year.
If it wasn't mandatory to play online games, I'm sure those numbers would've been less.

Yeah I get it for like $29 from cdkeys when I need to re-up, and even then, I hate paying for it. I don't even play online that often. I get some use out of some of the "free" games luckily, but if the online gaming portion of these services weren't part of the deal, I'd never pay for any of them.
