Thread: PS5 has generated more profit than PS1-4 combined

Looks like GAAS is here to stay :( RIP the Playstation I knew and loved

Good news is, there's still alot of good games out there from 3rd parties and Nintendo, bad news is, Sony's amazing first party catalogue will go untouched, and the best we will get for single player are remakes and naughty dog trash.

I'm def a Sony fan, but not this current version of Sony who has more in common with EA than anything else

This. Considering the insanity that happened with currency globally since the PS5 launched, this is pretty much meaningless.

I'd have that opinion if it was just an uptick, but all of the previous generations combined? Its even more amazing if this is post acquisition of Bungie.

This just shows that the "exclusives sell!" simply isnt true.
Brand loyalty is.

I'd say brand loyalty was paved with by exclusives initially though. But yeah it's a different era now.

Brand Loyalty is a factor (both emotionally and physically i.e digital libraries tied to accounts). I also believe price and convenience to be as big, if not bigger though than loyalty or exclusives of old.

Yeah it doesn't state this is inflation adjusted, just that they have applied the average exchange rate for each period, so you can't really make an apples to apples comparison between periods.

This. Considering the insanity that happened with currency globally since the PS5 launched, this is pretty much meaningless.

It's almost like the industry is bigger than it was 10/20/30 years ago. Like comparing big movies from the 90s to today, where only Titanic compares to the revenue of what's considered a hit movie today.

yep it's just investor propaganda to damage control their recent failings

looking at that chart I can tell you why the "old" PlayStation is never coming back: the PS3/PSP lost billions yet that was PEAK Sony first party output. Three Killzones, three Uncharteds, three Resistance shooters, White Knight Chronicles, Folklore, several Ratchet and Clanks, four or five Motorstorm games, two God of Wars, two LittleBigPlanets, two infamous games, plus a bunch on PSP with tons of third party exclusives like MGS4, Siren, Monster Hunter, Peace Walker, Crisis Core, etc

PS3 + PSP is the best SONY first party generation in PlayStation history.

Brutal.

Curious how much of that stems from PS+ subscriptions and whatever Sony's cut is from PSN purchases.

Until I see otherwise, I refuse to believe that Sony is making that much money off 1st party games alone.

Crazy... feels like it's been such an uneventful generation.

I guess the numbers speak for themselves.

Would love to know how much this influences the desire to make games like Concord and Marathon.

How much revenue are they making from in-game purchases on FIFA and Fortnite etc?

Keep in mind that the PS3 generation is removing $4B from the potential total of PS1-4 profits. If you remove PS3, the PS1+PS2+PS4 is $14B. So the 3 PS consoles that didn't lose money combine to more than today's total PS5 profits.

It would still be impressive to say that the PS5 has almost matched the total profits of those systems, but of course it makes it a more exciting stat if you include the PS3's massive loss.

This. Gotta be something misleading here. PS5 era Sony has been garbage.

They've shut down multiple studios. Concord flopped and cost them who knows how much, but most estimates are around $300 million (and that's a very conservative guess). They just pushed Marathon back, that probably won't end well either. Their internals leaked the other year and said the majority of first party titles were underperforming and not meeting sales expectations.

This does not paint a picture of a company turning record profits. There's definitely some spin in here somewhere, like 40 million AC Shadows players.

Not saying Sony is doomed, they definitely have infinite money to be retarded with. But their words (we're profiting) and their actions (closing down studios, canceling games etc...) do not match.

Makes sense tbh. PlayStation 5 is honestly the best console ever made. It does everything extremely well, has great hardware and plays the best version of console games. Huge congratulations to Sony, now hopefully they'll stop trying to do stupid shit like Concord.

I miss when PlayStation was manly with games like MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and Killzone 2.

It's a shame that subscription services replaced genuine console exclusives.

And they did it with no games. Impressive
Both Nintendo and Sony have mastered the art of making people think old games are new games, and have roped in the gaming media to help them.

Nintendo:

Twilight Princess! Only on the Wii!

Me:

What the hell is this thing?

Every time a new game came out on PS4/PS5, every gaming website covered the PS5 version and pretended like the PS4 version didn't exist.

PS4 did a lot of heavy lifting here. Reminder that almost half of all Playstation users are still on PS4.

That's actually a really good point.

And we also know the people still playing on PS4 are mostly playing older games like Fortnite, that are generating the enormous amount of revenue that makes every publisher want it's own mega live service game.

Damn, now I want a breakdown of exactly what is the PS4 and what is the PS5 on these record profits.

Went back with this in mind to read the follow up posts, and this is interesting…

Because this year is the first year more people are playing on PS5 than PS4. And that little stat they have there for 'lifetime to date' spending is comparing the first 5 years of sales, so pre pandemic and pre Fortnite, not actually like for like stats while both have been on the market concurrently, and not adjusted for inflation or the price increases for games, peripherals and PS+.

Also confirms PS4 players are still mostly playing live service games, the ones that generate all the money…

Yeah, I genuinely think most of that record profit has been the PS4, and they're trying to spin it as a success purely driven by the PS5.

Ok that makes more sense because outside of higher prices and inflation I don't understand how PS5 can make more money than all other gens.
I think either way it shows that Sony can put forth minimal effort and still laugh their way to the bank.
Ps6 1000$ price point with last of us and death stranding remaster as the only Sony games for the first 5 years of the systems life

ps5 is by far the worst sony console for gamers.........some would argue it was the ps3...at least the ps3 had original and new games regardless of how crap the launch was and its price
being profitable has done nothing for gamers
In retrospect, the PS3 was a good console in at least one respect. It has a good library. It also tried going without the annoying achievement system of the 360 for a while before eventually caving and introducing trophies.

Unfortunately, the PS3 and 360 started to standardize a lot of things that are now modern gaming staples (like DLC and an over reliance on the internet to name a few). Also, some of the PS 3 library had annoying save copy protection, something which both the Switch and PS5 would end up standardizing. How dare you try and back up your save data! We don't care if you lose the 40+ hours you put into that Final Fantasy game. Fuck you!

Ps3 gen was probably peak Sony. Kill zone resistance uncharted. Ps2 had the Socoms and Jaxs but the HD era brought it to another level. Game wise way better than PS4 and online was free.
After the price debacle the PS3 itself was a very good console and probably the last real generational leap we saw.

I think some of the negativity towards the PS3 was due to Digital Foundry doing comparisons of every third party title with the 360 version usually winning out through very minor differences in graphics and performance. This fanned the flame of the tribalist war between Sony and Microsoft fanboys. Very similar to how PC gamers like to shit on console games because of little differences in resolution, fps, etc.

Ironically, the PS3 was a far more powerful console, but this made it harder for developers to work with as the hardware was apparently rather complicated.
