Thread: PlayStation site hints that PC ports may need a PSN account in the future

A new FAQ on Sony's website hints that PC ports of PlayStation games may require a PSN account at some point in the future.

A section on the official PlayStation website dedicated to PC games contains information for players looking to buy PlayStation Studios titles on Steam or the Epic Games Store.

While some answers on the site FAQ are definitive, such as one regarding trophy support for PC games ("they will not sync with your trophies list on your PSN profile"), others include the word "currently", implying that the situation has the potential to change in the future.

Under a question about requiring a PSN account to play PlayStation games on PC, the site states: "No, you currently do not need a PSN account to enjoy PlayStation Studios games on PC."

The site also says it is "currently" not possible to transfer save data from the PS4 or PS5 version of a PlayStation Studios game to the PC version.

PlayStation Studios games on PC – such as God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone and this week's latest release Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered – can be played without the need to sign up for a PSN account.

This isn't necessarily the case with Xbox Game Studios titles, which requires an Xbox Live account for some games on Steam.

While some titles (such as Minecraft Dungeons, Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Psychonauts 2) don't need players to create an Xbox Live account, other notable Xbox Game Studios titles do.

The likes of Forza Horizon 5, Sea of Thieves, Halo: The Master Chief Collection and As Dusk Falls state on their Steam pages: "Requires third party account: Xbox Live."

However, this comes with the benefit of shared Achievements and shared save progress.

Intentionally vague language cleared by a legal team in order to minimise liability shouldn't be grounds for an article, but here we are.

To address the possibility, accounts should not be mandatory, we already have too many accounts forced on us. Optional cross-platform stuff? Great, good work.

I've been saying since they first started releasing games on PC that I didn't understand why they didn't have their own PS launcher where you could use your PSN account and where they wouldn't need to give Valve a share of their profits. My guess is that they were cozying up to Valve to get Half-Life Alyx on PSVR2.

Its coming. My understanding is they are redoing their PS+/Now PC app (again) to become the new platform for all PS stuff on PC.

Probably means crossplay for future multiplayer titles.
Dont be silly......sony would never be that organised

They need to figure out how to fix their shitty save system first .....not a couple of days go by without me having to remember which save to not overwrite when i turn on my playstation and for some reason the cloud save upload has fucked up

I feel like the first thread I saw about one of the new Playstation games going to PC was filled with people complaining about not being able to log into their PSN account for saves, trophies, multiplayer, etc.

It seems like a no-brainer that when they start pushing their PS games onto PC way more quickly that they'd want people to be able to log in from either platform and access their wallets to buy pink hats or whatever the fuck you retards are doing with online games these days.

That literally makes no sense. Both them doing their own launcher (no one will use it), or thinking cozying up to Valve will have any impact on them porting alyx to psvr.
