Japan Studio has been officially removed from Sony’s list of studios

The PlayStation website has a page that lists each of Sony’s studios, including the likes of Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog and Guerrilla.

Japan Studio is no longer present. In its place is Team Asobi, the studio behind the pre-installed PS5 game Astro’s Playroom.

Legit do not understand WTF Sony are up to here with this stuff. Japanese company...no Japanese development Studios? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Asobi is Japanese, is it not? Asobi and Japan Studios are my two favourite Sony studios, so either way, this is very sad.

When a Japanese system starts to forget what made it so cool to begin with. Super depressing. I think Japan has somewhat done this to itself by being so insular in many ways, but good product is good product, and this studio made great games.

Wonder if it was a rare situation where the studio is the studio in name only at this point?

And people are right, Sony having amazing Japanese and American presence made the PSX so amazing...

It’s a shame that all too often in this hobby, money talks, and quality walks.

I 100% see the reason behind Sony chasing western blockbusters that sell ten million, and promote the entire platform as must-play entertainment, but... to lose part of the soul of what they are, part what brought them to the dance, while it may not impact the sales charts overnight, eats away at a company from the inside.

I think this single-minded focus is a mistake. There’s no reason Sony can’t have their cake and eat it too, as well as their fans. Aside from just this studio, Japanese creators have often given Sony a sense of identity, and classics (even if with more down-to-earth sales results) that persist, and lift up their systems with positive word-of-mouth.

I think about my old PSP, and the thing that makes me smile the most, is not some western game that used every graphical feature, but games like Patapon (most memorable music ever) that were as Japanese as it gets, and so unique, wonderful, and fun for it. It doesn’t seem like there’s going to be a lot of room or priority for that kind of game on PlayStation platforms in the future.
