Thread: Phil Spencer says the anus is on business leaders to ensure players receive joy instead of experiencing more negativity

Ensuring Transparency
Phil Spencer has used an awards speech to state his opinion that game companies have a responsibility to ensure players and developers aren't divided, and are instead united.

Spencer was speaking at the 12th annual New York Game Awards on Tuesday, where he was accepting the Andrew Yoon Memorial Legend Award.

Stressing the need for video games to bring joy at a time when "there is more despair in the world," Spencer stated that the onus is on business leaders to ensure players receive this joy instead of experiencing more negativity.

"Today, as creators, as leaders, as world builders, our greatest responsibility is to inspire and invite joy," Spencer said. "Each one of the hundreds of titles that players have at their fingertips today and tomorrow is a calling card for joy.

"Halo, God of War, Vampire Survivors, Peppa Pig – big games, small games, mobile games indie games – each one is designed to deliver an infusion of joy in the midst of our lives, to give us so much joy people want to talk about it, to share it.

"We, all of us here today, all of our teams around the globe, we're all part of creating this echo effect of joy.

"Our creators who bravely and intentionally release their visions to the world, particularly in the current culture of criticism and cancellation. Our players who bravely and intentionally carve out time for our games to invite, rest and rejuvenate their lives.

"And business leaders – we're called upon to have the courage to protect and nurture this collective joy. We're called on to incubate these experiences, create them and grow them.

"To seek and surround ourselves with a multitude of perspectives. To honour our differences across experiences and geographies, and to practice empathy when intentionally listening to others.

"We turn away from dividing players and creators, and instead towards each other, as we advance and amplify joy together. This is the echo effect of gaming joy."

No, Pete, these are exactly the kinds of things that basically make modern video gaming a minefield. Brave creators intentionally injecting their political visions into games they didn't originally create but are damn sure going to use as a pedestal of activism. No, we don't want to seek and surround ourselves with a multitude of perspectives we're not going to agree with. If we can't agree on right and wrong, then it's best to keep politics out of video games if you truly want to protect and nurture the joy of gaming.

No.

Let's learn and accept that people are different. Let's understand that we're not all going to agree on things. Let's face facts and realise douchebags and edgelords and trolls will always exist and it doesn't matter how many times we say that unicorns are real it simply ain't so.

Let's learn to be resilient again. To accept harsh realities and prepare for them so we are fitter and stronger for the next harsh reality we have to face in our lives. Let's burn down the worthless safe spaces, trigger warnings, cotton wool, therapy and #bekind hashtags that have turned Gen Z into simpering puddles of doom-scrolling drool and doing dance videos glorifying their mental disorders.

Let's stop reading scripts written in rainbow crayon, full of trite platitudes whilst privileged clowns throw fists at each other on self-congratulatory award shows.

Let's stop constantly lying to ourselves and those around us.

But first, Phil, how about you shut the fuck up and ship some GODDAMN product?

What is also funny if how much of a hypocrite he is. Between Sony, Nintendo and Xbox, Xbox is by far the company that most engages in console war and has clear connections to their most toxic warriors on social media. Dude was never held accountable for anything and the sorry state of Xbox game studios is 100% on him.

It's pretty weird how he never gets called out by the gaming media for all his bullshit.
