I absolutely hate it. You don't have a "partner" because human relationships have meaningfully different categories. If you have a wife, say a wife, etc.
It's also 100% dishonest. Anecdotally, I hear "partner" from straight couples in my professional work regularly, but do you know who actually says "wife"? The lesbian coworker. She says wife to refer to her partner, and the ones with actual wives say "partner."
It's quite a lot like the use of "woman" now, where actual female organizations and functions have to say things like "birthing person" or "menstruating person" because they can't say woman, but do you know who is always allowed to say woman? Men who identify as women.
A concept is only acceptable now if it is somehow inverted against a norm. Absolutely embarrassing culture.
