So I have done a clean Windows 11 install. Run the memory diagnostic to ensure my RAM is okay, no problems there. Used the command line to run SFC /scannow and fix registry issues. But just have a nagging feeling there's more to come.

Going to leave it running and see whether I encounter more issues and we'll work from there.

Update/roll back motherboard bios?

I have my PC sey up in a way the boot drive can easily be formated and the rest of the PC such as documents/steam folders etc will be in tact.

Pretty uncommon for an NVMe to be faulty right? I'm almost certain that's what has happened here.

After my clean windows install to the same drive the boot volume couldn't be found again. So I've removed it and reformatted my other NVMe to now be primary partition (more ballache than it was worth given I had to go into the command prompt and reformat to GPT)

Not getting any beep codes from mobo so don't think it's any other hardware, a bit gutted to lose a TB of space but as long as we can have this working again I'll be happy.

As for BIOS updates and stuff @Hostile_18 i don't think I ever had to update my BIOS, so I am not sure whether rolling back would be wise in this case.

I only mention it because MSI had one that caused me random crashes last year. But it does look like you've found your problem. To be honest that's probably the best component it could be, in terms of cost. Just keep it aside for a few weeks just in case.

Yeah, I am not certain of what the issue is. Worried it is something more, as previously stated. Hopefully this is the end of it!

After I saw how quiet and decently fast new 20tb drives are I decided to swap out the ssds for 5×20tb drives in my NAS. Keeping 1 4tb SSD as a cache drives.

Quite a long process. So I'm going to delay the start of the game competition for a week. Want to give each thing the attention it deserves.

Wtf u puttin on a 124tb server 🧐🧐🧐🧐

Well remember those UHD's you like? Well that's 2000 movies with the image lifted directly from disc. A good encode at half size with no perceptual loss, 4000 films. At decent encode with a very small perceptual loss 8000 UHD films.

I tend to stick to 1080p disc or 4k Web downloads so thousands of movies and tv show episodes :D

My old offer/threat still stands...

Seems the new 4K/240hz OLED displays are already showing signs of faint burn in after three months of heavy usage under real world use cases (productivity/browsing, not just gaming or media consumption). Not noticeable unless you go looking for it, but not good that it's starting to appear this soon either. Can skip to the 7:25 mark if you want to cut to the chase and see what Tim from Hardware Unboxed found after his testing:

Oh man, I was afraid of this. I've been casually looking at monitors the last couple of weeks. My ACER Predator is now 5 years old, so I was curious what I would replace it with if it dies or develops artifacts.

It seems there aren't many IPS monitors nowadays. I read about the possibility of burn-in in the new OLED ones amd I'm not too keen on that.

Maybe the Samsung Odyssey G5, which is VS but apparently as good as IPS. Will see when I need to replace mine, for now sticking with what I have.

For those that have them, ITX cases/motherboards; stupid to be aiming at for a more casual user, or worth it for the size and looks if you don't plan on high end gaming with it anyway?

Basically I keep looking at this and all the downsides are being drowned out by how beautiful it is.

Really just depends on what your goal is. Its never a bad idea unless you are going for a build that simply wont work in an ITX case. I rocked a high end ITX build and while temps were higher they never were anywhere close to scary territory.

Not a fan of small cases, but cor blimey doesn't this one look nice (proper tower).

The North is nice, but it doesn't come in green. It is easier and likely cheaper to look at such MATX cases though. I want it small, but there's a point where you're just paying through the nose for less functionality or future upgrades.

Saying that, there is the Era 2 that comes in blue with a wooden top similar to the North, that is also very sexy. Plus blue is the missus' favourite colour…

Never forget

Ha, funny coincidence! I've been thinking this week about what software can I use to backup a cd to another cd. I still have a Blue Ray that also writes, on my second PC.

One of my cds failed recently (I have over 1,500 cds - music albums, that is - and love my collection) and started thinking about preservation. A lot of them are 30+ years old now.

Finally got around to Usenet and Sonarr rather than Public Trackers and Debrid and my god is it good, once calibrated!

It is upgrading my collection to Blu Ray Remuxes without any involvement from me, straight onto my server. When new episodes of tv shows like House of the Dragon come on, it adds them automatically.

Should of done this a lot sooner. Saving me all the many hours I was doing it manually, and of course access to all the private tracker uploads that make there way to Usenet.

I weened myself off Usenet about 10 years ago. It was truly a digital Aladdin's cave. I found myself dealing more with managing my digital files than actually running them.

I find Plex + Radarr / Sonarr and public trackers suit me very well and all the filing is handled automatically.
It's frankly absurd how good Radarr and Sonarr (and some other 'rr's) are at what they do.

It's like magic isn't it. I love it, but I need more hard drives at this point. I'd love to set up a NAS at some point.

Yeah good to have a second box just for media. You can make it really low power, and it's doing all it's business constantly, without interrupting your main PC.

Once it's all done, I'll use Radarr next for Films.

Yeah I had no idea how much of the work they actually take off your hands. It was a bit intimidating at first glance, but soon got it all working together. I use Usenet at the moment because it tends to have more Remux files than public trackers. Still both very good, and more than enough options.

Storage does become an issue, and you can only daisy chain so many external USB drives until it gets messy.

I don't need a full NAS setup, so invested in a nice 5-bay JBOD and have got drives in 3 of the bays.
Autism says that I should go with the same capacities for when I buy further drives - but won't need to worry about that for a little while.

I have a mini-PC which runs my Radarr / Sonarr setup, very modest specs and no moving parts.
I recently decided to use Prowlarr as a centralised way to manage my indexers for Radarr and Sonarr.
Bit of a faff initially, but it's all humming along nicely now.

I'm at the point where upkeep is frictionless.
I can remote-access into the mini-pc if I need to do anything serious. Otherwise everything else on it can be done via web-interface on my phone.
I think the only way I could add more to it would be:
  • See if I can hook it up to my Alexa so I can just "Alexa, add Tango & Cash to Radarr"
  • Add a request system to Plex so those I share my library with can ask for anything it lacks.
I already have Tautulli sitting on top of Plex. This is fun to review user behaviour. And it also allows me to automatically send out weekly emails to library users with nicely formatted "What's been added to the Plex library this week" newsletter.

It's been fun getting everything in place. I'm rather sad there's nothing left to do.

---

And all of this kicked off after being a very good cinema patron for decades (visiting every week) and finally having enough of price-gouging, lowering quality and shittier service.

Would anyone be interested in a Home Server thread, to discuss all aspects of NAS units, Radarr, Sonarr, associated software, code discussion etc?

Please do. I was about ready to jump in here with questions on Usenet, Radarr, and Sonarr but having a dedicated thread would be tits. Also gives me a reason to do some nerd-out posts about my current home server.

Glad there's intrest. It won't be a super detailed OP as I am still learning myself, but will be great to help each other out.

Not being at.the mercy of the Internet or Thirs Party companies is so much better honestly and you get so much flexibility with owning your own NAS.

Some solid advice from Tim at Hardware Unboxed: "DON'T Upgrade Your GPU, Upgrade Your Monitor Instead"

Might ruffle some feathers here in the first 3-4 mins with statements like 4K providing a significant improvement over 1440p at 32" and those claiming '60fps is sufficient for gaming are wrong,' but I agree 100% with everything he said in the video.

Around the 9:30 mark he brings up typical systems at the entry, mid-range and enthusiast level from 5 years ago and compares the GPU vs monitor upgrade path today when staying within the same budget.

Some of his closing words:

The reason I'm making this video is there are too many gamers out there that have neglected their gaming monitors as part of their PC gaming setup.

The display, the thing you spend all that time looking at while gaming is one of the most important components. They should be talked about with the same level of importance as GPUs, CPUs and other internal PC components, but unfortunately some gamers get tunnel vision and focus too heavily on upgrading the stuff that renders games rather than crucial bit of hardware that displays them.

There's few things more heartbreaking in the gamer world right now than GPU prices, but second to that is the heartbreak of seeing someone with a powerful rig playing games on a crappy $200 monitor from 7 years ago. If you're rightfully disgusted by the cost of graphics cards, the monitor market is the healthiest and best it's ever been. Don't neglect your display, you might be surprised how much better the modern monitor really is.
