Odyssey is out today.

I loved it for about 100 hours when it got released, but I waited too long for things like atmospheric planets and space legs to come to fruition and I gave up a few years ago. Hard to believe it was released 7 years ago.

Is anyone (still) playing?

I really wish this Odyssey thing wasn't so expensive, it's the price of the game, even more than I had paid for it.

I know how these guys do auto generation after putting so many hours into it, it doesn't look worth the money.

I love playing it, but this is a solid wait for a sale for me.

Hell I'm so sadistic I put most of my hours in on PS4 and even started playing it again on Xbox Series X.

The lazy bastards won't even put custom UI colors into the game, people defend it and say that it'll "break everything" FFS it's just a COLOR change, PC modders have had custom colors FOREVER. I'm just not a fan anymore of the "burn your eyes out orange" that they stuck with, at least give us 2 other colors, it's 2021.

whoa. Didn’t know the expansion released so quickly. I’ve only recently got back into it. I’m hoping the ground missions aren’t super repetitive

I bought Elite Dangerous very early, spent the £100 to get lifetime upgrades etc. Honestly it blew me away at first, a gorgeous-looking game and a brilliant UI. Then I started to realise how shallow the game is, in part due to its MMO ambitions. An inch deep and a mile wide is the oft-used description. That said, when I got VR it blew me away again. Docking is incredible. I should probably dive back in at some point though I have my retro stuff, Snowrunner and AoE2 in my queue, plus my Switch demanding my time. It's a hard life.

Yeah, exactly the same for me. First and last time I paid so much for a game, but I was just coming out of a relationship at that point and wanted a cheer up.
It was a wonderful experience, but the repetitiveness, shallowness and quite frankly the bad development process of features the following two years made me sort of give up on it. I even bought a Thrustmaster Warthog for it :(

Saitek X-52 here - sitting gathering dust.

I want to like this game on PS4 so much, but I just couldn’t get into it. Trying to get into that game felt like trying to break into a reenforced vault with a tooth pick.

It is a SUPER SLOW slog, I think where you start is random, if you start in a system devoid of good jobs you're fucked for a long time and need to crawl through the game. The combat is tough at first, the trading is slow.

You have to really want to play the game.

The landings get way easier when you bind a key to 0% throttle, such a stupid omission.

It's non-glamorous space trucking the game.

Yeah. I think I would like it a lot if I could ever get into it, but I don’t think that’s a hill that I’ll ever be able to climb.

Agreed, it's space trucking, but the funny thing is I'd rather play Euro Truck Simulator!

I haven't played Elite: Dangerous in a while - it's one of those games I've been meaning to go back to, but it takes a lot of time to make progress in it, not to mention getting your bearings again if you haven't played for a while.

I'd thought about jumping back in once the new update came out since I'd also splurged on the lifetime pass when the game first came out - it doesn't seem to be going down that well though. At time of writing, it's reviewed as Mostly Negative on Steam.

It doesn't support VR when walking around yet either - Elite: Dangerous is one of those games that I just don't want to play without VR at the moment as it's so much better with it. It's still one of the killer VR apps out there. I think I might wait a bit longer until it's been refined a bit.

Yeah this is a big issue tbh trying to get back into the game after years of not touching it. I tried a few months ago, got blown up in a few seconds, and did not try again. The sheer number of control mappings is ... too much tbh.

I feel very disappointed with what they did with the game. This stupid insistence to make it online only and mmo-like ruined the game in my view.

Yeah, there is a bit of that too. I used to take great joy in the old Elite games in starting trouble at the stations, then seeing how many police Vipers I could blow up before they got me.

If you try that now, you're looking at hours of graft to replace your ship and repair your reputation instead of just being able to reload a save.

Too bad it's reviewing so poorly. I thought for sure this would be the expansion that drew me back in. Also, it not being fully vr capable? Bummer.

So, any updates from anyone? I see they've released a fair few patches in recent months. Anyone know if the $40 price tag on Odyssey is worth it now? Is it VR yet?

Think they're still trying to get it fixed - I'd given up looking at the updates because it seemed like it had such a long way to go before being playable.

Had a look out of curiosity though just now:
  • Steam reviews are still "mostly negative", though the discussion board looks fairly civil.
  • A new update just came out which "improves performance" - apparently VR performance was badly hit on Odyssey, but it's getting closer to "pre-Odyssey levels" according to some random on Reddit.
  • Odyssey content is still 2D in VR.

So it looks like things are gradually heading in the right direction, but it still has a long way to go before it's ready for your $40.

So, basically...

Good:
  • They're still banging away at it
Bad
  • They still have a ways to go
Man, that $40 price tag, tho. What were they smoking.

  • This tbh
