Thread: Original WipEout Source Code Released by Archival Group

Ensuring Transparency

A copy of WipEout's original source code released by video game archival team Forest of Illusion includes the original, uncompiled code for both the PlayStation and Windows versions of the game. At the moment it is unconfirmed whether the sources can be built into working executables and played, though some developers are already expressing interest in fixing the files so that they can be built and run. A source code release is a relatively uncommon occurrence for preservation, and considering the incredible mods created for Super Mario 64 after it was successfully reverse-engineered, the source code of WipEout could be an interesting playground for mod developers.

While it is important for preservation, the release of WipEout's source code is also unsanctioned by Sony or Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool. This could cause legal problems, as game companies can be incredibly restrictive about archival, with Nintendo's recent takedown of an old Super Mario 64 strategy guide being an especially egregious example. Hopefully Sony is more lenient, especially since the WipEout series has been mostly dormant for so many years.

That's really cool, especially with a Windows port already existing. People will undoubtedly:
  • Clean up the libraries to make it compatible with modern systems
  • Run the textures through an upscaler
  • Make the game run at modern resolutions and refresh rates
I've seen singular people do at least one part to games, so the communities that will exist for this will get this done with no trouble

I only really played the 1st a bit back in the day and I didn't get fully into it until HD so this will be cool to try on modern PC.

never played this one I've only played f-zero is it abandonware or something?
It's a Sony brand, originally developed by Psygnosis, that didn't get a lot of attention recently. Sony certainly isn't happy about this leak.

In case you want to try out the series, I suggest checking 2097/XL for PS1. It's the second entry in the series that is a lot easier to get into than the first one. Furthermore it's one of the games that shaped the early/mid era of the PS1.

Always hated Wipeout. It was the game the journos talked about a lot in the magazine days because it had euro trash dance music, I never understood why this was considered a top tier racing game, I hated the physics model and it just felt like lifeless corporate contests in the future

What set it apart was that it was the product of Designers Republic. They were responsible for the aesthetics and music choices. It is a place in time with some talented developers making a hovercraft jet racing engine. I enjoyed it, the game did a great job of showcasing speed in a way that hasn't been approached since VR. I enjoyed the branding because each team had its own look and feel. As far as a racing game, compared to today it is lacking in quite a bit but at the time, the music, aesthetic and futuristic racing cannot be denied that it elevated the genre.

I only played the one on the PS3 and the visuals have been Clean as hell.
I was aiming for the platinum trophy but some of the trophies were so crazy hard I eventually lost interest. One of them was called "beat zico" (he was one of the developers afaik) if I'm not mistaken and you have to drive a phenomenal time on a track without any mistakes and some clever shit I can't really remember.. jumping on a platform and boost with a spin or shit like that.
The other one was I think you have to get to a certain level of a zone in zone mode. And shits getting faster and faster. Never couldn't get those two trophies. Even though I was closer to beating Zico (think my best time was less than a second to this guy) than to the zone one.

What I wanted to say ps3 game was awesome.
