Is this a sign that the supply shortages are getting better or is it just that Nintendo was due for a slump prior to a new SKU release? A bit of both?

The top games put me to sleep but they do seem to corroborate the victory.

Damn strong performance by the Switch so far. Let's see how much the current gen consoles will be able to sell once the supply situation has normalized.

I hope this is due to increased production/availability. If so, I see this as the start of trend that will last through much of 2022. So many games (supposedly) coming next year that sales should reach new records (again). Since MS has genuinely embraced PC I think they will sell lots of games/subs/MTX, but not that many Xboxes. Of course Sony could always follow suit, but doesnt look like they want to just yet. Depending what Nintendo has in store for 2022 they can easily hop back on top. BUt I think by EOY 2022 the Switch will lose a lot of steam. Which is fine cuz we should be anticipating a new Nintendo platform in 2023.

Ya most likely a combo of ps5s finally getting into the wild and new Switch model which makes me sad cause its such a minimal upgrade.

Sony had been massively investing in greater production capacity in their Japanese manufacturing centres, with some very neat new automation tech, so it's certainly possible, and more rhan desirable given China cutting manufacturing capability by 70% due to power supply problems.

Xbox is kind of in this limbo state between third party and platform holder. They seem to be doing everything they can to make people not have to buy an xbox, then also investing massively in first party studios, only to focus all their marketing efforts on gamepass. I think you're probably right in their hardware numbers being way down on last gen, but profits are up thanks to getting more steady revenue from the customers they've retained, but I fear there will be an inevitable tipping point, where the numerous of customers they lose due to not locking them into their hardware echosystem will not be outweighed by the increased spending of their diehard fans, and there will be little they will be able to do to reverse that trend.

Switch will likely get a bump with the OLED next moth, like we saw in Great Britain, but yeah, broadly that console is done apart from a BOTW2 bump. Hopefully Nintendo still have enough in the pipeline to prevent a total momentum collapse before they enter the current gen with the Switch 2.

I thought this was a curious nugget in the report: "US NPD ACCESSORIES - September 2021 spending on video game accessories fell 12% when compared to a year ago, to $171 million."

What might explain that? We just transitioned into new generation of consoles, supposedly breaking sales records in the PS5's case, and Switch sales remained high. I wouldn't think much of it if it was a single digit percentage change, but in the double digits it makes me wonder about the bigger picture.

What percentage of PS5 sales are happening online? How many of those are sold direct from Sony?

I've become more skeptical than ever, keeping a close eye on Sony's TV division and associated marketing this year probably not helping matters.

100% have been sold via online retailers up to this point. Jim Ryan said as much recently. The breakdown between online retailers vs Sony Direct, I have no clue.
