While Warner's game is free-to-play, MultiVersus led monthly sales because of the popularity of its Founder's Pack bundles, which cost between $40 and $100, the market research firm said.

Elden Ring slipped to No.2 on July's software chart, while Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga also dropped one place to No.3.

The only other new entries in the top 20 were Xenoblade Chronicles 3 at No.4 (although it could have been higher if NPD tracked Switch digital sales in its ranked reporting), and Digimon Survive at No.8.

On the hardware front, PS5 generated the highest dollar sales of all consoles in both July and 2022 year to date, while Switch led both time periods based on unit sales.

NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said total consumer spending on game hardware, content and accessories in July dropped 9% compared to the same period last year, to $4.18 billion.

Year to date spending totalled $30.5 billion, representing a 10% decline compared to the same period in 2021, with subscription content remaining the only major spending category to experience growth.

What I don't understand is if multiversus is number one because they're counting the microtransaction type stuff how come we never see fortnite chart? As far as I knew it has the most daily players of any game and it's full of micro transactions.

Also does anyone else find it weird that they bother to tell us which system sells more units as well as which system earns more revenue but they don't give us similar data for the games just the revenue?

I'm just lead to believe their just lying about how much all these games are selling and they want it to look like everyone is playing this game.

I mean I think that would be absolutely insane lying about stuff like that is a big deal because of investors and such and I'm not sure what stake NPD has in doing so. All I can think is maybe there's a difference between smaller micro transactions and a bigger ones like do they consider it DLC or a small micro transaction but still Grand theft Auto V would often chart years after and from what I understood it was because of revenue generated from the online. I guess a big part of it would be that it's more stretched out the purchases whereas this game just came out so the whales spending a lot of money would all be doing it around the same time whereas people playing fortnite annually aren't necessarily dropping all their money at the same time on the cosmetics.

That said it's still is weird to me that we don't get a top 10 games based on units sold we only get revenue but we get told which console sold more units as well as revenue if I was going to give you a theory on that... It would be that I do think you are sort of right I don't think that they lie but I do think they want to push the idea of success for certain people and companies that they approve of and what I have gathered from the people at NPD is they really like Nintendo, lol, so telling you the unit sold is a way to let you know the switch is still doing amazing and with video games you don't want to emphasize the difference between units and revenue because switch games don't drop in price and other games do I mean sometimes switch games get a deal but it's very rare it's much more likely to happen with anything non-Nintendo, so while a cheaper console can sell more units a game that never drops in price is more likely to be more of a revenue generator though of course they have games that have sold tons of units like Mario kart 8 and breath of the wild so it could just be me spitballing because I get so annoyed by Nintendo fandom (I was all about Nintendo until the Wii personally)

A friend was just talking about this one. They said its actually a good alternative to SSB. I was shocked as it looked like a basic cash grab. But my buddy is as hardcore a gamer as there ever was and they are really liking it. I am not big SSB fan these days, so it does nothing for me. But there are a lot of folks who love the sub-genre.

Not a single exclusive title from MS or Sony. And worse for Sony, once MS completes its ActiBlizzard acquisition, this chart would leave Sony being the only major player with nothing in the top 20.

The chart starts off well enough and then gets pretty concerning. Multiverse is perhaps controversial but at least it's something new to play, so I get that. Elden Ring still holding at second and that's great. They're followed by (another) Lego Star Wars game, and while I totally miss the appeal of playing through another Star Wars Lego game where two thirds of the content is based on the tepid last six films, I get why people dig the Traveller's Tales Lego games. Then there's Xenoblade 3, which is good and that's where the list devolves into basically a bunch of shitty CoD shooters, ancient Nintendo games, and even more ancient Minecraft. This is not a very healthy list in general and it's especially concerning if you're a Sony fan.

If I released a free 2 play game but got Gates and Musk to buy the DLC for 1 Billion each would I have the highest selling game of all time?

Horizon Forbidden West is still the fourth best-selling game of the year to date I would only be concerned about them not charting in a particular month with an exclusive if they just released one personally.

I think Grand theft Auto V has surpassed 2 billion but I could be wrong it's at least surpassed 1 billion in revenue
