Nah they were advertising this direct Nintendo store invitation bullshit since the day of the direct. This isn't new. And it's some crap where you'll only get an invitation if you're a Nintendo online subscriber for at least a year and have X amount of hours logged it some shit. I get it they're trying to combat scalpers but this is kind of silly.

Yeah, but was the date always May 8? I was under the impression they were beginning preorders on April 9 along with everyone else, at least originally

Fair enough but since we know that Nintendo doesn't sell it's hardware as a loss leader, it begs the question how much it really costs to manufacture.

Unless they are losing money on every Switch 2 sold in Japan (which they famously do NOT do), they are making a killing with the markup for the rest of the world.

The source for the $334 Switch 2 news stated Nintendo subsidizes the console in Japan. That implies that they take a loss.

Been following UK thread on Gaf. They indicating the recent open up preorders are basically sold out at Smyths, Argos and Amazon. Amazon is restricting/cancelling orders from US. 🤔

Nintendo Switch 2 is now delayed in China

Nintendo has decided to postpone the release of its new game console, the Nintendo Switch 2, in mainland China for the time being. The current Nintendo Switch was released in China in 2019, but sales have been sluggish due to government regulations that limit the number of games available. The company is expected to wait and see what demand there is.

Nintendo will release the Switch 2 on June 5 in Japan, Europe, and other regions, but not in mainland China. In China, Tencent Holdings, a major internet service provider, has been selling the current Switch and its software. When asked if Tencent was in talks with Nintendo about selling the Switch 2, the company declined to respond. Tencent announced in November 2024 that it would end online-related services, such as online sales of current Switch software, in 2026. It appears that the priority of related businesses is declining.

The background to this is the unique regulations and market structure. The release of game consoles and software must go through inspection by the authorities, and restrictions are imposed that reflect the authorities' intentions. Another factor is the popularity of mobile games, which can be easily played on a smartphone without the need for an initial investment in a game console.
According to Chinese research firm Gamma Data, the Chinese game market is one of the largest in the world, reaching 325.8 billion yuan (approximately 6.4 trillion yen) in 2024, but it is highly saturated. The government is encouraging domestic games to go overseas, and the release of the Switch 2 will spur intensifying domestic competition.
Wang Xu, chief analyst at Gamma Data, said of the Switch 2, "The hurdles to success in China remain high. They need to improve the consumer experience while complying with government policies, and there is also the issue of whether they will be able to introduce major international software."

However, there are many Chinese consumers who are very interested in the Switch 2. Some e-commerce sites and brick-and-mortar stores are accepting pre-orders for the Hong Kong version of the Switch 2. The current Switch was released in China about two years after its release in Japan, so there is still a possibility that the Switch 2 will be released in China as well.

That's not just a postponement, it's a "no plans to release for now" announcement.

Can't blame them. The government there approves barely any games, especially from foreign companies, so they got completely screwed with the first Switch.

Nintendo will need to find new partner for China(required by commies). Tencent is ending their agreement with Nintendo.

if they even want to. China is a loss unless you are a live service game. And Nintendo (even on Switch 2) does not have the patch submission process to support real live service games.

Only ones that can handle slow and infrequent patches.

Then announce a new Wind Waker release. Actions, not words.

Honestly it'll probably be years and years and years before we see TWW/TP HD for NS2, if at all. It might even be reserved for the last stretch of the console's life or the next console up of we have TWW on NSO. Fans want the HD Zelda games to release but Nintendo probably hasn't paid those two games much attention at all. I think those games would only be sold if Nintendo had nothing else for a particular season. Best to assume that they're not coming as I think fans hyped themselves up over this one. Since 2019 we've been hoping for those two to be announced for the NS
