According to new data from Toyo Keizai, an economics magazine company based in Tokyo, Japan, Nintendo is currently the richest company in the country.

As spotted by Install Base forums and X user Pierre485, Nintendo currently boasts a cash and cash equivalent value of roughly $11.44 billion when converted from Japanese yen. According to the data, Nintendo also has a debt value of... wait for it... Nothing. Zilch. Nada. No debt.

Other gaming companies in the list include the likes of Bandai Namco at number 25, Square Enix at 38, Konami at 50, SEGA at 63, GungHo at 64, Kadokawa at 81, and Capcom at 88.

It certainly demonstrates just how valuable Nintendo is at the moment, with the company enjoying monumental success with the Switch, its theme parks, and the launch of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. Not to mention, of course, all of its growing success since its inception back in 1889...

It might also be surprising that a certain company called Sony hasn't made the list at all, but this is likely due in part to the firm's own debt value, which as of September 2023, was reportedly totalled at $31.33 billion.

Seriously? I'd have thought car manufacturers like Toyota and Mitsubishi would be more profitable than Nintendo.

Yeah I thought the same thing, can someone explain how that works so a game company is richer than global automobile corporates?

It's a cash reserve ranking. Nintendo has the most cash laying around.
I know that it's about who has the most cash at a given time, but do other companies have it that bad they don't have more reserve money than Nintendo including debts? is that a normal thing? I have no knowledge in economics as you can tell.

They have been expanding at a monstrous rate to be sure. I don't recall Nintendo having all this merch in the late 90s and early 2000s. They used to sell the same Ocarina in Nintendo Power for years. Now there's Legos, plush galore of every character you can think of, they have an entire system of earning merchandise and prizes by playing their games

Super Nintendo World probably takes in a lot of dough. I would guess Pokémon has much to do with it as well

They're honestly doing a better job managing their brand than Disney is. Pretty soon more kids will be familiar with the Italian plumber than they are with Mickey Mouse.

Richest company, zero debt. And they make VIDEO GAMES. And they stay away from political bullshit. Seems so simple, really.

More power to them; the industry needs one company that proves the conventional gaming model is still not only viable, but dominant when executed properly.

Toyota, the actual biggest company in Japan, has something like 200 billion dollars in debt. Most companies have a lot of debt because (until recently) debt was dirt cheap and made a lot of financial sense.

Wow, and that's with them leaving all that money on the table not porting their exclusives to PC or other consoles!

Imagine how much richer they could be if they'd copied the same strategy as Xbox and PlayStation! They'd probably own the moon! If only they'd just done what made Xbox loose hundreds of millions and PlayStation make a third of the profit they used to, back when they took the same approach as Nintendo do now with the PS4. Then they'd be even more the most successful!

This basically signals that almost every other company in Japan could disappear in 10 years, but Nintendo isn't, and hasn't ever been, one of them. Nintendo operates on a very conservative model and doesn't take many huge risks with its cash reserves. They could take a big risk on a new product on the understanding that it would hit their cash reserves, but they'd simply try again in another 4-5 years.

Nintendo makes video games but isn't just a video game company. They could totally exit the video game space and go do something completely different and be fine. They sell other things too.

Depending on who you ask, he already is.

Though, I think Pikachu has better odds of being number one. Pokemon is already the most profitable IP in history.

Speaking of business (and not games here), I have always loved Nintendo's approach. They are so conservative fiscally (while being so creative in terms of content). Generally always looking to profit (or at the very least break even) on hardware along with their methods of maintaining brand value in terms of software. They're just incredibly wise in their decision making imho. And they always find ways to distinguish hardware outside the domain of raw power, giving their devices a unique draw that obviously sets them apart from their "competition" in the market. Of course, they've had their misses, but they have a clear vision that has brought continued (viewed from the macro perspective) success. I just find their company history and story quite remarkable.

Well deserved success. Im surprised they are more successful than Toyota or Honda though. Also surprised Sony is not on the top 100

Its a list of cash reserves minus debt. Nintendo is debt free and cash rich.
