Awesome to see. Yoshiaki Kawajiri's best work (alongside Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust) deserves all the exposure it gets. Especially among new anime fans who've probably never seen this. I just hope this will get enough people hyped so Kawajiri can finally make his long awaited sequel.

The anime that got me into anime. I had no idea they were doing a sequel.
Sadly no. That little trailer I posted was just a video proposal Kawajiri did in 2012. The project has been in limbo since then because they first film wasn't a big hit in Japan like it was in the West.

I tried to watch it when I was about 12 and it seemed a bit too rapey. Also, I was quite traumatised by that severed arm blood drinking bit.

Might actually check this out if finding a location/time isn't a pain. Pretty fun one with some good sequences even though they seem to start running into budget issues during the second half.

Also one of those rare ones where I'm ok with the dub due to it being so fun and corny, even though it maligns the seriousness of the story.

I do need to rewatch this one. According to my Plex server, the last time I watched it was 2021. I can still remember the first fight and how it ends...but the battles are kind of mixed up in my head with the ones in Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

Back in High School, this was one of the big full length animes me and my buddies would watch/talk about (along with Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Spriggan and Vampire Hunter D). Back when being a bit of a weeb was fun.. and not cool at all.

The dub is horrible, especially the guy who plays Jubei. Dude couldn't act serious and brooding to save his life.

I'm not against dubbed anime mind you. But rarely do you see English dubbing that equals the original Japanese track. On that note, I thought Media Blasters dub for Berserk was excellent.

It certainly is easier now to be a weeb with the internet. And you don't even need to have a streaming service to get your anime fix. Recently I've watched a number of anime for free on Youtube channels like Muse Asia and Ani-One.

Now that I'm older though, I find a lot of the so-called 'classics' of anime to be overrated. You mentioned Akira, which I find to be kind of mid as far as anime movies go. Especially compared to the vastly superior manga it's based on. Also, I was perplexed as to why the Ghost in the Shell movie was so celebrated. I much preferred the original manga and the tv series Stand Alone Complex. Never watched Spriggan though.

First, watch Spriggan. It's very underrated.

As for Akira. I think it was a top of the class animation when it released and was overall a fun ride. When I first watched it in the mid 1990's I loved it! But there is a major catch with Akira imo… you have to watch the Anime before you read the Manga. If you don't the anime comes off as a mess of stitched together events. But if you watch the anime first it comes off as simply "wild".

I LOVE the Akira Manga. Probably one of my favorite manga.

Oh I don't disagree. Jubei is a serious character but the dub gives him all this hammy dialogue and the VA plays into it further. But again I enjoyed it due to it being so corny but I am well aware it's wiping it's ass with a lot of the material and is not a proper way to view the intended experience.

Though I am very much not a fan of dubbing. Usually if I watch them it's because it's a somewhat inept anime where a bad dub makes it more fun in that old kung-fu movie way or just pure nostalgia for stuff that was only available in dubbed format during the VHS era(Basically almost every Streamline release). The pool of English VAs has always been so incredibly low-rent they bring down most productions and reading subs is so easy I find myself apathetic toward people who can't follow them.

+1 for Spriggan. Yeah the story goes off the deep end into silliness but it's a fun action movie, has great direction and the animation is wonderful.
