The game opens with a prologue during the summer of 2049 in a snowstorm. In a modern, broken-down grocery store, the main character fends off attacks from ethereal monsters to protect the sick Yonah — his younger sister. After defeating the monsters, he checks on Yonah, who has begun to cough badly. The game then cuts to 1,312 years later, where the main character and Yonah are now living in a village built upon the ruins of an old town. The low-technology village is one of several, and is surrounded by more modern ruins such as the remnants of train tracks and industrial machinery. The areas between towns are filled with monsters known as Shades that attack travelers.

As Yonah's illness, the Black Scrawl, is terminal, the main character sets out to look for a cure. He finds a talking book, Grimoire Weiss, which suggests that the two team up to use Weiss' magic and to find a cure for Yonah's disease. In their search, they encounter Kainé, a hot-tempered and foul-mouthed swordswoman; and Emil, a blindfolded boy whose eyes petrify anyone they see. After journeying for a time, the village is attacked by a giant shade; the battle culminates in Yonah being carried away by a master Shade that suddenly appears—the Shadowlord—who carries his own book, Grimoire Noir. Nier and his companions must then away in pursuit of this new foe...

Welcome, @Komatsu !

Other than some strange technical issues with the PC version, I've really been enjoying this. Just about 3 hours in, but it's got a really intriguing atmosphere and the music is awesome.

I wish it autosaved a bit more, though...

Welcome @Komatsu !! Good to see you here.

I normally don't game more then an hour or two in any single day. I've sunk 25 into this since Friday. I have all the weapons and wrapped up ending B. On to C+D.

Oh and one more thing. The game's OST is one of the all time greatest in gaming history

Playing this all over again made me remember

I'm about 8 or 9 hours in at the minute, just at the end of the intro description in the OP. Never played it first time round but loved Automata and went into this completely blind. Loving it so far and intrigued as to where it is headed. Fantastic music, as I expected.

I wish there were a way to rebind light/strong attacks to the right shoulder buttons and move spells to the face buttons. I'm still not quite used to the controls since I've been playing a lot of Souls and Assassin's Creed games lately.

Oh shit good luck with that 😂 I feel your pain though

Have tried the different controls presets? Check them

Yeah, there are a ton of options, but none of them seem to allow for both attacks to be moved to the shoulder buttons and for spells to be moved to the face buttons. Oh well! I'll get used to it eventually. I keep fucking up and attacking instead of dodging.

Wrapped up all the endings in about 30 hours. Ending E has some crazy stuff and is worth sticking around for!

I hope they do a PS5 patch eventually to increase the resolution and make the load times near instant. My only gripe is that there's a ton of running back and forth and the areas are small, so there's a lot of loading screens. They are pretty quick on PS5, but wouldn't be so bad if they could utilize the hard drive more. The design is a relic from the PS3 roots so I understand why it is is like that though.

I remember from the Xbox 360 days that half the game were loading screen XD

Just finished the desert dungeon. I really enjoy the setting/story and the combat, but everything else about this game is kind of bad and janky, isn't it?

Not sure if I'm going to make it to the finish line on this one.

It is still a lower budget PS3 game at heart.

Yeah, it took me like a year to get past the first ending. Then it all starts to fall into place so the story is more engaging and the subsequent playthroughs are very short.
I think you need to max out all weapons for the final two endings, which doesn't take all that long.

You don't have to fully upgrade all weapons for the endings in the new one. You just have to collect them all. They can still be lv1 to get ending c+d.

Yeah, maybe it was like that in the old version too, I can't remember.
