A Living World
A Living World
A world with an ever-changing climate.
Life here has learned to adapt to the harsh environments, the wildlife developing its own ecosystem,
and the humans developing their own culture within it.

Changing Environments
Experience two distinct seasons in the massive, ever-changing environments found in the game.
Fallow, a period where hungry predators roam the land for food, is followed by an ecology-altering Inclemency, leading to a rich period of Plenty.

The same locale may look completely different between depending on the two seasons.

Each environment is inhabited by its own apex predator, which will appear during the area's Inclemency.

Discover how the people and monsters have adapted to the wild changes of the land.

Each area contains settlements established by peoples that have called that environment home for generations.

Experience how each community has grown and adapted to their environment, and how their culture and daily lives have been shaped by this adaption.

In the Forbidden Lands, you'll encounter not only herds of small monsters—some of the large monsters of the region may also form packs.

Each group has its own place in the ecosystem, with its own unique movements and behaviors.

The Windward Plains are a diverse region filled with sandy deserts, swaying grasslands, twisting rock formations, and other natural features. As a member of the Research Expedition charged with investigating the Forbidden Lands, the Windward Plains is the first new hunting locale you'll visit. This land experiences an Inclemency known as the Sandtide, a great sandstorm roiling with thunder.

Most reviews make it sound like the game is just too easy which I find frustrating. The game was never hard it just required you to play to the monsters weaknesses and be cognizant of what they're strong against

Take away the early gear grind for this reason and you got a really shitty product IMO.

The charm of MH is that the grind itself is fun and satisfying because typically endgame is not fun. Endgame turns into coop missions where people get 1 shotted and you lose any progress to actually killing a boss unless solo.

Makes no sense to make the base game easier when the end game is punishing to a fault but oh well.

I mean… the games have gotten steadily easier. The palico partners have always been a massive boost, and demystifying the armor skills allowed a lot more players to lean into good mid-level and endgame builds without consulting wikis. The environmental traps, the ability to mount, the free health bugs found in levels, the glowing guide bugs, the full-blown grappling freedom in Rise, all of this makes the game much easier.

I wonder if we've reached the point — similar to the Dark Souls genre — where veterans are just too good to feel the same challenge anymore.

I'm assuming all the expansions will have the challenging content. This is Capcom best selling franchise I get why they don't want to alienate normies.

Its been accepted for a while that Expansions with G Rank are when Monster Hunter Titles fully hit their stride.

Rise for example released without an ending before patching and Sunbreak. Hoping thats not the case with Wilds lol.

Ok so for someone who never played an MH game.... I like Souls games, I like exploration, I like a tactical approach to combat.

But my time is valuable, I hate bloat and repetition.

Go, pitch me the game! Or should I avoid it?

The meat of the game is getting better with your weapon class and learning the monster behavior. It has a decent bit of simulation-y stuff (at least for an action game). It's all about the hunts, really. Exploration is a part of it, in the sense that you're gradually finding shortcuts, secret rooms, and extra gathering points as you explore the map and hunt down the monster.

It can be repetitive when playing solo but a lot of folks just play through the whole game in multiplayer.

Monster Hunter does not have the stress of soul games I find, unless going up against a powerful monster on a time limit say, an optional investigation but even the time limits can be generous. In Worlds and Rise at least you have expeditions with no time limit and downtime gathering material for potions, traps, materials to help make armor/weapons through major monsters do eventually leave. You can stumble across hidden areas with native tribes to ally with or set up a new hunting camp/outpost. I find that relaxing wondering around and gathering, mining, even fishing.

Atmosphere is the opposite of Soul-Likes horrific dead and dying nightmare worlds. Civilization in Monster Hunter is post apocalypse but exists and has rebuilt in ways, flourishes even, there are villages, towns, even a city I think in Rises Sunbreak expansion though have never gotten that far. Technology with settlments at least 1700s with large sailing ships able to mount full expedtions to the New World, and mass use of cannon for defense.

Hunting Gear is more Naruto schizotech. Blowgun can ramp up to a hand held M-60 Machine Gun held by the Captain America/even stronger tier superhumans who are Guild qualified Hunters.

Not to say Monster Hunter does not have its own share of pretty dark shit but it's usually way more in the background. There is lore and implied lore too, not as direct or as much a focus as Souls at least earlier in the games. Fallen destroyed Kingdoms are a thing, usually ones that were unfortunete enough to draw the attention and ire of one of the several Super Kaiju. The series can be over the top in a lot of ways. I hear one of the Elder Dragons in Generations is a fond meme for having fucking jet engines built into its flesh and the ensuing fight with it.

Is there a story worth mentioning? Oh and I saw a hot chick, that's positive.

Take it with a grain of salt, but the IGN reviewer publicly commented that the difficulty was noticeably lower and that someone who "beat Elden Ring will not find this particularly challenging."

I played Demon's Souls back in the day because it was recommended by people I knew online from playing MHFU. They are not really the same, but they offer their own unique challenges. A lot of the fun from MH is incrementally improving your gear and your actual player skill. Until around 4th gen games MH's stories were basically entirely vibes based with no 'real' narrative. For example in MHFU the story is basically that you are sent to replace a wounded old hunter in a remote village and are nearly killed on the trip there by some unknown and particularly ornery monster. Which you then kill after you build your strength back up. Most of the story is only vaguely implied and is you taking on work form locals, travelers, and organizations that have interests in monster hunting. Eventually they have you fighting living natural disasters.

The entire draw of the series is getting hooked to the grind. I really don't think you'd like it at all based on that 2nd sentence.

You learn weapon(s), enemy timings, how to become more efficient at killing monsters based on each weapon's intricacies and how those timings interact with the enemy moves/timings. Then, you kill them over and over and over to get parts to make new higher level gear to go and fight higher level monsters.

Sometimes they have a different color. And you hunt them over and over with the new color because you want the new gear. Then you get to the post game where they are infected or tempered or whatever that game is doing because you want that new gear. There are special event type mixes where you hunt them again over and over to get skins and stickers and shit. There are special bosses that you fight over and over because you want that new gear. And that's the hook :ROFLMAO:

While I agree with that sentiment - I also don't enjoy grinding in games. Monster Hunter is one of the few exceptions.

I tend to view the grind as the gateway to the gameplay is some respects. I want to fight the harder monsters, thus I must make new equipment. Then I coast on it as long as I can, until the cycle repeats. Or I'll fight monsters so I can make a weapon or set I'm interested in exploring. It becomes a means to an end in a sense. I just really enjoy the gameplay enough to offset hunting 25 Azure Rathalos in a row. Plus it feels good when you master a monster's moveset so well you can practically beat them with your eyes closed.

All that to say, the repetition in MH isn't that bad if you're in the right mindset.

The feeling of improvement is incredible. Went from running away from Anjanath, to having it flee from me in my flame armor and my water hammer.

Another example-

Got one-shot by a tobi using another weapon. Tobi are right bastards.

Redid quest, and climbed onto his back, and drove my hammer down onto his skull and finished him.

I love every second of the repetition in MH, so I totally agree. I don't mind grinding most games that give me a grind loop that is satisfying to me, and there are very few games/series that are as satisfying to me as MH.

It's kinda in a league of its own, but it definitely isn't for everyone. And someone who says they hate bloat and repetition could use a fair warning that that's literally what this series is at its core. Those of us who know how satisfying it actually is also probably remember the learning curve to get to that satisfaction (though it has gotten easier than it has ever been).

Oh yeah, when a you can finally get "revenge" on a monster for all the hardship... it's really nice. Especially when you get a real clean fight where they're just on the backfoot the entire time scrambling and you're serene through the entire thing.

Me and my buddies were hunting Rathians for something back in World. We had the poor girl down to a science by the end of it. I have a very vivid memory of knocking her out of the air, and me and one of them alternating hammer blows to her head like workers on a railroad spike. Good times...

Prior to the last 2 entries MH Rise/MH World the MH series was extremely routine and rigid. You had to prepare all your items/food prior to the mission where if you didn't prepare correctly it would be a total mission fail.

Capcom has really boosted the QoL features since to make this game consumable for all both in a casual and hardcore sense.

You can totally do some casual hunting/exploring at your own leisure or you can follow specific missions for rewards/materials to improve gear

HOWEVER
Make no mistake about MH games. They are grinding games. You can likely get to the endgame of the story without any real grinding but the endgame is 100% an extreme grind and almost nothing more.

Endgame will eventually boil down into no matter how strong you are facing monsters that do instant kill shots you have to avoid with only 3 retries available. Couple coop end game with 3 retries and 4 people possible of dying on every attack and you really find yourself dependent on being good and also having party members who are both good and have good network connections. I found myself more often than not doing all endgame In solo because dying is just too damn easy with the hardest monsters.

Hearing terrible things about the PC version beyond the absurdly high requirements. Loads of crashes, failure to boot on modern systems, insane swings in frame rate. Steam reviews are "mixed" with only 47% positive.. Anyone got any first hand experience?
