Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the fastest-selling game in the decades-old franchise to date.

Activision has announced that worldwide sell-through for the first three days passed $800 million – more than the previous record holder, 2011's Modern Warfare 3, managed in five days.

It's the biggest opening weekend in the series' history, and even surpassed two of the year's most successful films. Citing figures from Box Office Mojo, Activision claimed that Modern Warfare 2 outperformed the opening weekends of both Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness combined.

Other new records set include the biggest three-day digital sales for the series, and the highest number of unique players and hours played in the first three days of a premium Call of Duty release.

Modern Warfare 2 – a sequel to the 2019 reboot, rather than a remake of the 2009 original – released on October 28 to strong reviews, although some critics were uncomfortable with elements of its campaign.

The game's success is no doubt a relief for Activision Blizzard, which saw disappointing sales from last year's entry, Call of Duty: Vanguard. The title's underperformance was cited as a key factor in overall declines at the company earlier this year.

I'm finding myself kinda wanting it, but I just know it'll go on sale soon as hell. You've got the black Friday sales these always get on top of warzone 2 launching soon

Hype from the title alone, the positive reception of the reboot, pent up demand from those of us who skipped last year, hype from the return to Steam.

But these numbers are also helped from the $70 price hike.

It's a pretty good game but I think Treyarch is still the top team in the rotation.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to be the fastest-selling entry in the long-running shooter series, according to publisher Activision.

Having topped $800 million in sales in its first three days of availability, the game crossed the $1 billion mark in 10 days.

In doing so it surpassed the record previously held by 2012's Black Ops 2, which took 15 days to reach $1 billion in sales.

Activision said over 200 million hours were spent playing over one billion Modern Warfare 2 matches across PlayStation, Xbox and PC platforms in the game's first 10 days.

"The incredible momentum driving Modern Warfare 2 is a direct reflection of the energy and passion of the Call of Duty community," said Call of Duty general manager Johanna Faries.

"As we look ahead to an unprecedented level of support for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0's launch next week, we are motivated to deliver again for the best player community in the world."

While not officially confirmed, it's been claimed that Activision doesn't intend to release a new mainline Call of Duty game in 2023, essentially skipping a year for the first time in two decades.

The company stated in August that Call of Duty will receive "new premium content" in 2023, and it's been claimed that this will come in the form of a Modern Warfare 2 campaign expansion and a 'greatest hits' pack containing multiplayer maps from a variety of classic Call of Duty games.

Modern Warfare 2's first season of live content will launch on November 16 alongside the free-to-play Warzone 2.0.

Well damn. We knew it was going to do well... but new record for the franchise? Some people are going to get HUGE bonuses!

It's so odd how things work out for them. The game has modes and features missing that were just taken for granted in previous entries and it's not like the maps even look that cool or anything. I don't quite get it.

It doesn't seem to be doing anything special to make it such a big deal and then you have the new (completely free) Warzone coming soon.

It's a good game, I've been enjoying my time with it, but so far it doesn't seem as good as MW2019.

I miss the bigger team death match modes that were 12v12. I like the bigger maps.

And This game needs more maps.
