Thread: Microsoft has discontinued all Xbox One consoles

Microsoft has stopped manufacturing all Xbox One consoles. The software giant originally discontinued the Xbox One X and digital Xbox One S ahead of the Xbox Series X launch, then quietly stopped manufacturing the Xbox One S at the end of 2020, leaving retailers to sell out their remaining stock.

"To focus on production of Xbox Series X / S, we stopped production for all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020," says Cindy Walker, senior director of Xbox console product marketing, in a statement to The Verge.

Microsoft's confirmation comes just as a Bloomberg report suggested Sony had planned to end PS4 production at the end of 2021, but that the company will now manufacture around a million PS4 consoles in 2022. Sony has confirmed PS4 production is still ongoing, amid struggles by both Microsoft and Sony to meet demand for their latest Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles.
Microsoft seems able to meet demand for the $299 Xbox Series S, though. At the time of publishing, the Xbox Series S is in stock at both Amazon in the UK and Best Buy in the US. Speaking just after the launch of the Xbox Series X / S in 2020, Xbox chief Phil Spencer told The Verge that the company had built more Xbox Series X consoles than Series S, but that ultimately the lower price point of the Series S would win out.

"We can actually build more of the Series S [chips] in the same [chip] die space as we can the Series X," said Spencer. That's a key reason for why we're seeing steady Xbox Series S stock, alongside Microsoft's decision to quietly discontinue the Xbox One S in favor of its next-gen consoles.

They don't care for higher sales numbers I guess. It's crazy to me that the PlayStation 2 was still being sold just a year or two before the PlayStation 4 came out.

I'm sure it's a big matchmatical equation that will make sense. From fabrication costs, software support etc plus the series S having a lower price point anyways. Also the new naming frankly sucks as long as there also selling such similar alternate skus to confuse the customer base. Narrowing the offering strengthens the key lines.

Just wait for the Series U
You joke, but If there is mid gen upgrades this go around I can see MS keeping the "Series" moniker and adding something like "Extreme" or whatever the 202? buzz word for that is.

Interesting given Sony are ramping PS4 production back up to try and take some pressure off the demand for PS5's. At least this might mean a PS4 price cut is more likely now, I they're the only ones buying these chips.
The Series S seems to be moving a lot of units and it's cheap, it's also essentially a new gen Xbox One, I think this is the right move.
It's less that its moving a LOT of units, and more that there's been a larger number of them made compared to the XSX's, so is the better selling of the two. We have no idea if it's actually selling well.

Supply of the XSS has already exceeded demand, as they're basically in stock everywhere all the time, so there's no way of knowing whether it would be selling as many units if the XSX was actually available to buy more often.

I prefer Series Fluid so the player can define what series they identify as when gaming.
Imagine those calls to Gamestop asking if a new game is coming out on Xbox Attack Chopper and getting mad if the employee deadnames you with the old name you used to have for your Xbox model before you realized you were a two-spirit.

I'm honestly not sure what MS are going to do in this regard. Theres already rumours of Sony preparing the PS5Pro, and there's been speculation on some of the design and patents on the PS5 that look a lot like they're built to make such an upgrade super easy to implement.

The XSS and XSX launching in unison though really makes any new series mid gen upgrade a bit of a pickle, both from the perspective of how they'd market it and what it could really accomplish that the XSX doesn't already.

The PS5Pro at least would be an upgrade to true 4K, and would be a huge benefit for VR. An XSX-X could maybe shoot for 8K, but basically no one has an 8K TV, and it definitely wouldn't be actually hitting that in any games that matter.

But then again, are they really going to want to concede the console power crown to Sony? Would they push out an XSX-X just to one up their competitor? Could they actually make enough of them if they wanted too? They're already struggling to meet demand for the XSX, and Sony definitely have more purchasing power to get first dibs on console chips from what we know of sale numbers.

At the start of the Gen I'd have been interested in an Xbox handheld, but with Steam Deck I've basically already got that, especially if MS follow through with the rumoured Gamepass on Steam hints.

It just feels that by going high and low power from day one, they've painted themselves into a corner.

Makes sense. Series S for cheap asses is enough, no need for One consoles anymore. Would be interested in the BoM of the One consoles compared to the Series S. Sometimes, there are issues with parts of old consoles because they get more rare and prices can actually go up, making it not worth it to keep producing them. Especially during times with supply chain issues, all resources are being shifted to the new products.
