Straight to the chase: I'm tired of certain people at certain places always acting as if video game developers are some of the poorest people with the harshest work conditions that we MUST fight for and protect. Fuck that. For my pov, game developers are extremely privileged, well-earning people with a comfy sitting-in-a-char job and many benefits that enjoy the additional benefit of being able to later say "I worked on that game!". While there may occur issues within that work space that are less than ideal, I really hate how some people make it their agenda to protect and support these well-off people when so many jobs are so much worse and nobody gives a shit.

So, to make a start, the first three jobs that spring to mind that are significantly worse than developing video games:

- working at retail (always on your feet, dealing with nasty people, nobody respects you, low paying)
- mail man (low wage, outside no matter the weather, somewhat dangerous)
- baker (non-existent social life due to shit work hours, hard work, low pay, little respect)
- cook (similar to baker; even if you're a star cook, it's repetitive work with shit hours)
- etc

Feel free to add jobs to this list. :>

Let's feel sorry for literally anyone BUT game developers. Thank you.

It seems like being a developer is ground zero for SJW politics, though. Imagine being stuck in a cubicle next to "Janet" who used to be John with purple half-shaved hair and a 5 o'clock shadow who never has good ideas and complains about being constantly misgendered and you have to pretend to be an ally all day while working twice as hard as "Janet" on a shitty current day game you hate.

Damn I'd rather do sheisse porn than having to sit next to some danger haired pseudo victim harpy.

Game 'journalists' who love to cry about the plight of poor video game developers have obviously never tried farming. Now that is seriously back breaking work with very low pay and little to no recognition from society at large (especially where I live). Where the fuck is the outrage for the poor working conditions farmers have to work under?

At least game developers get to work in an air conditioned office. Screw anyone who says they've got it worse than others.

I dare say Crunch sucks ass, but it's a well-paying profession relatively so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
A lot of jobs have "crunch" and oftentimes it's much worse than what is seen in the videogame industry. They generally know when their target release date is and can at least plan for the crunch period. I'd even argue that in most cases, with proper project management crunch can be eliminated while still hitting your release date target.

I know people who work in other industries who routinely have weekends and sometimes even vacations ruined because a client will drop a "rush" project in their lap and expect it to be done right away. To me, that would suck a lot more than a crunch period that I know is coming and can plan for.

I worked for firms where crunch would be a regular thing with project deadlines. The differential is that the projects were for months rather than years, so the crunch was generally in the last week or so or during milestone periods. Still sucked ass though. I had a week leave cancelled on me once on the day before I was about to take it which was kind of BS. Still, there are good firms and bad firms at the end of the day.

Being a game dev is definitely not the worst job by any stretch. It just has some major down sides depending who you work for. I honestly loved working for Electronic Arts other companies who wont mention... not so much. The real downside is that most of the big game companies have taken the blue pill and woke as fuck. "White" heterosexual men are basically working on borrowed time these days. My company sends AT LEAST five diversity emails out each week (we are more diverse than the census results). Every townhall (which are monthly) we hear from a Diversity eNet before our CEO talks. They ask that white men take a step back and allow BIPOC/LGB/Women to speak. This basically means you have to give up promos just to save your job. It fucking sucks! Hell I am not even entirely European and I have had to confront claims of Sexism, Racism and homophobia (with HR!) Each time I destroyed the accusers with facts as I am the most laissez-faire dev manager in the company but I keep extensive records and running profiles on all my staff. So at a moments notice I can speak to their performance, comp, professionalism and so on. But its known that I am big hunter/fisher and firearm enthusiasts, so they just assume I am some ass backwards redneck who hates minorities. Its funny when I bust out pictures of my family holiday get togethers and see all the non-white folk or mention how my best man (and one of my best friends) is an openly homosexual man who is married to a Vietnamese man.

I think the problem is part just a reflection of the current culture war (which is fucked). And equal parts that most game devs (in the US) come from (upper) middle-class families and they themselves have lived sheltered lives. Thats why they say they have to "represent" BIPOC folks.... cuz they never knew any growing up and feel guilty and are ignorant to the facts. I tried explaining to a colleague a few years ago that in poor communities, no one gives a shit about race/ethnicity. And that white/Hispanic/Asian folks say the n-word all the time within their "in group" (aka friends) and that the black friends in that circle are cool with it as they know its just a familiar term like dog, bro, bitch, fucker, etc. Their brain almost burst.... they they tried to argue that I was wrong. LOL!!!! Before landing my first break I was poor as fuck working at fast food restaurants hanging with these people so I speak from first hand experience. This fucker came at me with movie shit as if thats real life. Honestly its these fuckers who drove me off social media. They were scouring people's posts looking for anything to run cry shitwolf with.

But all that said.... being a telemarketer has to be the worst job ever. No one is ever happy to you called. And I would hazard that the only success these people has is when they can take advantage of an elderly person. Talk about having a fucked conscious. My heart goes out to the people who have to do that to make a living.

Being a LEO has to suck too. Life on the line everyday. Half the people hate you and just looking to take you down. And for pretty shitty pay all things considered.

Deli Clerk all the same problems as retail and treated like shit by customers and corporate! All for minimum wage.

But yea I will rather be homeless and live in my car than work telemarketing.

Bro, you're making minimum wage for customer-facing retail food service? Down here in Florida Publix's starting wage for baggers (which they catch a tax break for employing (clinically) retarded people) is 1.5 times minimum wage. The deli people (I was one for 5 years) started, and made much more.

Brochacho, where did you make minimum wage working customer-facing food service in a deli, so the forum knows who not to work for.

I don't work there anymore I moved on to better things, but B&R stores in Nebraska they are a big local grocery chain in that state.

I worked minimum wage when I was a temp after HS for the month it took my 1st gig to hire the Rent-A-Drunk on full time. That was 18 years ago that I was a young dumbass out of HS that thought $200 was a lot of money.

If you don't know the skills to get more than $20 per hour, get the skills.

Fuck. Now I really want a Publix sub!!!

Good, if the industry in your home-town is insufficient (owned by Chinese interests) it's on you to do what you need to do. The local grocery chains still only offered federal minimum wage though?
Fuck. Now I really want a Publix sub!!!
As a shareholder I will always encourage this.
Or work on your gag reflex.
Bro, you already get a free Publix logo tattooed on your asscheek after 5 years at the warehouse, what more do you want?

I'm wary to say driving a truck is worse, because even though I work 12 hour days on average most of that time is spent consuming audio media.

My Audible license list is measured in months, I can blow through an average audiobook in 2 days. I love my job as much as it sucks.
Are you a hog hauler by chance?

Great post.

I have worked a couple of shit jobs in my life, but being a software dev is the best thing ever.
Sitting in a warm room, listening to your stuff on headphones, coffee, chatting with colleagues, etc.

Try working for UPS for a while, if you don't like the stuff mentioned above.

I really miss the days when games dev was a couple of (yeah, mostly white as far as I know) nerds sitting in their bed rooms coding stuff in assembler.

Your post is insightful and I'm really surprised that tech companies have bought into this diversity and inclusion bullshit. Finding a job is hard enough but to keep it you're expected to follow some woke playbook? Fuck that shit, I'm quitting and looking for an employer who pays me for my work and not adhere to some purity test.

I'm just thankful that none of this woke mindvirus has really gained ground in my country. Here in the Philippines, where a majority of the population is at the poverty level, no one fucking cares about social justice issues and most are just concerned at making a living. Like you said, it's really sheltered rich kids into this woke crap.

3 jobs I would never do;

Cleaner at a shopping centre. People are pigs and have no self respect.

Telemarketer. Seriously man, who gives a shit what you're ringing for.

And truck driver. Too much traffic and most of it has no clue how to share a road with a prime mover.

Within software development generally not so much. Too many people want to do it, too few places available, so pay is relatively low. On the other hand those of us who do less glamorous code make cash.

It's kinda like data entry jobs. Sure, it's a deadend path, but you can make really good money depending on where you work. Lots of medium sized companies who can't afford a full department of entry people will hire a small team for an upfront fee. I know a guy who works for a state office and makes a nice living just typing away the day. They pay more if you're been there longer than two years, scaling up every year, since people tend to use the job as a spring board for other departments.
