Thread: Japanese anime/game music plagiarizing other composers

I never noticed until now how similar to The NeverEnding Story multiple songs in the Final Fantasy series are. So I looked it up and found that other people were pointing out the same thing.

I posted about this on GAF and got a response showing other examples of either heavy inspiration of plagiarism. Here is Yoko Kanno and Craig Armstrong:

(starts 1:10)

More Yoko Anno:

And of course the main MGS theme and a classic Russian composer, I remember being really disappointed when finding out. Kojima seemed pretty surprised when this was brought up, I guess the original MGS theme was never meant to be in the actual games, it was originally just in the preview trailer for MGS in 1997 and never plays in the actual games until Harry Gregson William's version of it in MGS2 (correct me if I'm wrong)

And comparison of Final Fantasy and NeverEnding Story:

Dancing Mad in FFVI and The Turks theme from FFVII share similarities with a couple NeverEnding Story songs:

(starts around 13:30)

(sounds more similar as the song goes on in latter half)

Don't forget Record Of Lodoss War's composer just wholesale stealing tracks from Leviathan.

And the original...

Further proof that Final Fantasy sucks.

Yuzo Koshiro ripped off a lot of stuff in his early years from what I recall. But since then he hasn't been accused of plagiarism, at least that I know of.

The thing with plagiarising music is we only know of the examples that were actually recorded. It's harder now since everyone has a recorder on their phone, but back then there was nothing stopping a guy from going to a bar/club, hearing something from a small unknown act and then stealing it with no proof.

Here's a couple
Virtua Cop stage 2 song sounds suspiciously like Walk the Dinosaur

For anime, some Bubblegum Crisis (And Crash) with the shameless rip offs

OVA 5's intro theme was a rip off of Jeanne Mas' "Johnny Johnny"

Crash's intro is a copy of a Joey Albert song.

And there's half a dozen others from that show too.

Weirdly enough there is one that appears to go the other way around where a song copied music from a game? Or could just be a coincidence but these are eerily similar.

Alejandro Fernández - Como Quien Pierde Una Estrella

And then look at the much earlier Wicked Child from Castlevania

not a anime song but still a plagarization. Sepiroths theme did this with some classical song but I can't remember what the name of the song was. Summer something is all I can remember
