With all the talk about MS buying Sega, MS dropping out of the console business and Sega returning, I thought it'd be fun to take it at face value and imagine that Sega indeed announced a new home console. The question is simple: Would you be excited and if so, what would you expect from that console?

For me, it'd be this:

- I'd absolutely like it, because Sega being a console competitor is too nostalgic to not like it.
- hardware that can be sold for at least 100 dollars cheaper than PS5's cheapest model. Maybe even going after Nintendo's hybrid-market would be a good idea.
- games-wise, they'd absolutely need to announce the following 3 games for launch window:

  • Soul Calibur Revolution (series-reboot that focuses on the orginal cast of characters and adds the best yet story-mode. Gorgeous graphics, ofc. Taki's nipples have never been bigger/fleshier)
  • Space Channel 6 (Ulala's return in a great rhythm game perfect for pick up and play-gameplay)
  • Skies of Arcadia 2 (but it will be called "Skies of Arcadia: Moonfall", high-quality jrpg, uses the first game's battle system, but faster. Full of homages to the first game, but can be enjoyed by itself. If successful, Sega promises full-remake of the original game)
  • Seaman 2 (making full use of the controller's motion controls, microphone, etc.. Super weird game with online-features)

No stupid subtitle for a Skies of Arcadia sequel. Just call it Skies of Arcadia II so it's clear we're playing a new mainline entry and not a spin-off, prequel or whatever. It should be like the Valkyria Chronicles or Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest series in that they were numbered sequels too.

20 years between two games, calling it "2" - best way to have it mega bomb.

Skies of Arcadia, despite being the greatest JRPG of all time, never sold well enough. Giving the sequel a subtitle named after a bad Roland Emmerich movie isn't doing it any favors.

"Skies of Arcadia" exists, "2" would kill it. It needs a subtitle. Stop being a lobotomized idiot. If you don't like my subtitle, just imagine one you like. But a subtitle is the way to go.

Sega really doesn't make anything I even like nowadays.

They could start by making sports titles again. NFL football please.

They gave a subtitle "Legends" for the enhanced re-release and it didn't sell any better than the original.

Sadly, Skies of Arcadia is not a household name like The Legend of Zelda or Sonic the Hedgehog. I also just prefer numbered sequels. Especially for RPGs.

I'd be excited for it but not sure How it'd do it would have to be contrarian to everything we already see right now meaning more Arcady stuff their Known for producing like vf.

Regardless I absolutely believe arcade like games can still sell. I think that's what people would actually want. They got the money to do it.

Bitch I lived through the nightmare of Sega consoles after the Genesis, I'm not willing to go through that shit again. Sega showed its immense ineptitude when it came to hardware then, then they barely manage to get by on software for the past two decades. It wouldn't exactly fill me with buyers confidence to hear they've got a new console coming out.

Edit - yeah that includes the Dreamcast. Sure it had some good games but settle down fanboys, one of the most overrated consoles of all time. Fight me.

  • Focus on arcade like games...see Rodea the Sky Soldier
  • Catchy soundtracks
  • A unified management that would avoid the pitfalls that led to their initial demise in the hardware realm
Other than these...I'm not sure what to answer...I'm pretty sure Sega fans more invested than me would answer about a certain X factor/s that I'm forgetting about that would make a Sega console distinct with a unique identity

I'd get it just so we had more competition in the console market, but I would do so not expecting anything and knowing it would be a waste of funds. Still, Sega has a lot of franchises/IPs (let's not forget what Atlus would bring to the table as well). If they had a bunch of studios working on the amount of IPs they own, they could easily support a console based on the strength of their library like Nintendo does.

I don't think there'd be much else to ask for they'd already stand out well enough

In a random coincidence. Project Jupiter is the code name for the next Call of Duty.

Switch PS4 Pro tier Successor
PS5 Pro
Xbox Series/Pro Equivalent
Steam Deck/Likely Improvements

Don't see a Sega console doing well here. Especially not attempting to compete with the Nintendo Switch with a tablet that won't even have a fraction of Nintendo's library.

Now if Sega Remasters Skies of Arcadia, greenlights a sequel, ports Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 and greenlights a Valkyria Chronicles 5 I'll at least believe they are actually serious about expanding into the fantasy RPG market while Yakuza continues to be their RPG mainstay.

Would not mind a new Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed and a remaster of the first. Damn fun game, and something that should be their Mario Kart equivalent.

Also get teams to make a Diablo ARPG game for Warhammer Fantasy. Not low tier shit like Chaosbane either. A Dragon Age Origins like RPG set in Warhammer Fantasy would also be nice.

Fun fantasy true. But in the end, this is not the Sega it was back in the late 90ies.
There is literally nothing left of that magic.

Still, I'd love to MS buy the brand, and release their consoles under the Sega moniker. Just for nostalgy.
