Thread: It Takes Two’s narrative is garbage

I have been going through the game "It Takes Two" with my daughter and I cannot stand the story to the point that I am regretting the purchase.
The players in the game are playing as a husband and wife who are about to get divorced. This is causing their young daughter to be sad and through voodoo she turns them into dolls. Only the daughter doesn't know she turned them into dolls. Anyway, the man and woman want to get back into their bodies so the thrust of the game is working out how to get back to normal.
As I have played the game, I've learned that the husband is a huge coward. He doesn't have a job. He is always whining and cannot figure out how to leave a place when the door is right in front of him. It's the wife who is always, ALWAYS the level headed one. She's an engineer and is always calming her man down as he panics over ever little thing.
The only part I've played so far where the man shows any confidence is we they are going through a castle he built with the daughter. And even then he's a fuck-up.
This game takes the "dumb dad" troupe and turns the dial up to 20. I hate the guy.
I will grant that the game itself is a fun time. It's the story that I find annoying beyond anything I've ever played.
@Mista gave the recommendation on which I made the purchase. Should have warned me, bud.

Sounds like a typical modern game.
At one point the husband is crying saying the wife is never home because she's always working. She has to explain to him that if she didn't work, they would lose the house. I think my jaw was on the floor at that point.
This may be typical, but I have never seen anything so obvious and pandering in a game before. It is shocking to me.

Trying to get Wifey into gaming and she told me about this, didnt know anything about it other then 2 player co op, man and woman. I knew there would be dumb weak man, strong empowered woman tropes before I heard anything else. But that bs divorce, lazy unemployed 'cause of problems' angle really pissed me off. If she gets it I'm telling her we aint playing unless I can skip all of that bs

And the reason of their divorce is not because he's unemployed and "weak" The game isn't like that

You have to hear the bullshit while you're playing too. They talk to each other throughout the game, not just cutscenes.
Guy is constantly whining.

It totally is like that. You tell me when the book talks to them about clones and time that the man starts whining that his wife is always working? She has to tell him about how household finances work.
He's a househusband. He doesn't work! I thought maybe he was an artist or something that means he works from home. Nope. Maybe he's handy or something? Nope. He nags his wife because she didn't fix the vacuum cleaner that HE broke because he's incompetent.
They are going through a portal and the wife is saying "Wheee!" The husband barfs. It's chock full of that crap.

He's a gardener and he's very into it. You see here's the thing when people talk about knowing it all by just playing a bit

Drop it then and go play another game

Where does it say he's a gardener? Near the end? What does that mean. He plants flowers in the backyard? So does my wife.

FFS, cant these fuckers not leave anything alone. Husband and Wife co op, cool. Reasonable strenghts and weaknesses, cool.

Forced wokeism not reflective on reality, fuck off. Just let me play a video game and ignore politics and social commentary (if the story doesnt require it) PLEASE!

I really don't think I'm overreacting. The guy started annoying me almost from the beginning. They are standing in front of a door and he says, "How are we going to get out of here?"
The door is right in front of them. I started fuming and my kid is laughing because I'm so pissed.

Sounds like a good game to cut the dialogue volume to, and skip all the cutscenes.

It sounds like they tried to reverse gender stereotypes, and pass it off as progressivism. Instead of, you know, creating a married couple that would be lovable and believable.

Regardless of the modern situation, nobody wants to play as a loser, or have one whining over the entirety of the game.

To be fair, the playing of the game is fun. There are different mechanics and gameplay always changes. But the story is pure poo poo. I have a bet going with my kid that the parents, despite the premise, are still going to get divorced and all of the togetherness will be for the sake of the daughter. I put my odds at about 50/50 at this point.

Yes! He's a loser. There are times when the two must compete in little mini games. I feel so defeated that I think I've only won two. And those were because my daughter was feeling sorry for me.

From your description I actually don't mind the story. I know a few couples like that, and to be honest with today's era of men, that are literally pimping out their wives on onlyfans, is it that foreign a concept? Except you know, the women likely aren't engineers. But there's an entire generation of useless men out there, whoring out their wives so they can stay at home and chill.

Since when do people attach the game's story when they do a recommendation? Sorry 🤷🏻‍♂️
When it's a part of the game. Are you gonna tell people to suffer through TLOU2's story just because of muh gameplay?

Its a fucking fun game from start to finish for fuck sake

Its not "shit"
Ill give it a run. Its always fun for me above all else and it looked that way. Dumb story stuff can annoy me but a gamey co op game like this isnt my go to for story.

Never in my entire life I have seen someone explain a story of a game when recommending it. Part of the game right? Why spoil it then?! What an idiot lol

Ah yes you meant it like that. That's fair

Still, this game's story is nothing crazy in my opinion. I've played games with more cringe story. So to me this whole reaction in this thread is exaggerated. If OP relates then that's something else but if it's just a reaction, then surely it's exaggerated.

Is it reversing gender stereotypes when that's been the norm in mass media for a solid two decades now, though? I can't remember the last sitcom I watched where the dad wasn't some kind of fat retard.

Oh. The dad's a gardener. Not in a landscaping business owner sense. He has lost his passion for his hobby because his wife doesn't encourage him enough...to play in his backyard garden....making no money for the household.
Just got to that part. So there's that. The book also admonished the wife for her not thanking her husband enough for cleaning the house. I am not making this up. Every time a fighting section comes up the wife always has the sword or weapon. The man can turn into a flower....

While I don't appreciate it, it's really not that far fetched of a narrative. Like I said, I've actually met couples like this. Society has been breeding beta males for generations now.

I am not denying your lived experience, my friend. I am just not used to this and am having a hard time with it. The couple are going up a mountain on a lift. The wife comments saying,"This is where I bought your Christmas presents."
"I thought you brought them with you," the man replies.
"Oh, I was going to, but I forgot them and bought more presents at the store. I didn't want you to be disappointed on Christmas."

Now, at this point, I will tell you a story. Every year since we have been married when my wife asks me what I want, I always tell her that her love is the best present I could have. If she got me nothing but a big hug, I would be satisfied. I am not eight. I say that every single year. But, what does our man in the game say. "I could have just waited for my gifts."

It's like aliens made this game but mixed up men and women.
