Sold my disc PS5 to a buddy who's been looking for one because I hadn't really touched it since I beat Miles Morales. I didn't scalp him or anything but I came out of it pretty nicely. Was out and about with the family the other day and noticed a Target nearby had a Series S in stock available that day soooo what the hell.

Been playing with it a lot the last couple days. It's small, quiet, and fast, I dig it. Internal storage does suck but the external HDD I use on my XBox One hooked right up and everything there was ready to go. Moved my Hitman 3 and Master Chief Collection installs to the internal memory and downloaded the Series S/X upgrades for those and they are just lovely. The upgrade for Hitman 3 is a literal game changer; yes it looks a bit nicer and runs a bit smoother but the load times oh baby. I'm much more willing to try some stupid shit now that it doesn't take two minutes to reload an old save when I screw up.

The projector in my game room is only 1080p and I'm not upgrading that anytime soon, so I'm not missing out on 4K. I'm holding on to my old XBOneS to finish up the last few disc games I've got on that. Gamepass is a must-have with this thing and I've already paid for a developer account and side loaded some emulators so that's fun too.

Really couldn't be happier with this. The relatively cheap cost does help and by the time I'm really able/willing to upgrade my AV situation in the game room it'll be mid-gen hardware refresh time anyway so I can get the bigger box then.

If you're not an absolute technophile and you see one available in your area I would consider it.

(Digital is a no-go for me) however I don't see what PS5 is offering other than good PS4 b.c. so... why bother? The all in one nature of XsX (emulation, better b.c., game pass, etc) seems like a winner but if you have any interest in vR later in the gen I think Xbox will be a slouch compared to that PS5 you sold.

Nothing stopping you from getting a PS5 later, though, and personally I've never understood sticking "loyally" to one console for the whole gen.

Four replies and nobody's called me a retard, wtf d-pad is truly the gentleman's gaming discussion forum

If you're only playing at 1080p I get it. I could never see myself parting with my PS5 though, I thought about selling it for a while, but it's just such a nice console.

It is indeed nice, and I'm sure I'll pick one up again a few years from now after a refresh/price drop when there's more stuff available. I've owned every console from the big 3 starting with the PS2/GCN/XBox generation and I'm sure this one will be no different, but young kids and old man life stuff has me a little slow out of the gate this gen. BC and emulators are a big plus for me too as I still play a ton of older games.

Yeah I can't say I like the entirely digital aspect of it, because I do like reselling most of my games when I'm done playing them. The upside to that though is that I currently have a relatively small collection of disc-based games that I lose the ability to play (which I'm hanging onto my One S for right now), so ah well. More and more I'm waiting on sales these days, too, and for, say $20 a year from now the difference between physical and digital Resident Evil 8 isn't gonna bug me much.

That said I will definitely be getting the one with a disc drive when mid gen refresh time rolls around.

I'm not super big on VR but it is something to consider. Gonna wait and see what else that RE4 VR gets ported to. It's supposedly Oculus exclusive right now, but...it's RE4 lol.

Hey man, if your output is 1080p and you are fine with that set up, then any other decision would be the weaker choice all things considered! Sounds to me like you made the perfect call for your needs. Hope you are having a blast :)

I've had my Series S a month and been loving it. I bought it on a whim after finding one cheap and being tired of pissing about getting the gaming PC set up with a controller and changing settings to display on the TV. My PC is packing a 2nd gen Ryzen 5 and an RX580, so it's more than capable but by no means a powerhouse. The Series S is about at or just above the level of PC performance I'd get on One X and 360 games, but leagues ahead when an optimised for S / X game is played. I just signed up today to Game Pass for a year with a code from CDKeys and after that year, I'll decide whether to upgrade to an X, keep the S or jump out of the ecosystem. I guess it all depends on what MS do to keep Game Pass interesting and what sort of games I can play, what sort of value I get out of it compared to deep sales on Steam and my major Ninty franchises and indies on Switch.

First month has been good. Maybe only the honeymoon period, but I've managed to finish Tetris Effect, Streets of Rage 4 a few times (after beating it on Switch), Banjo-Kazooie and Blast Corps, both of which I've been dying to replay for years. The Touryst, which I didn't bother buying on Switch because of the price. This weekend I 1000G'd Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair and beat The Medium. All of those games were 'free' on Game Pass, all of them offered something I was interested in, or was replaying for nostalgia's sake. The Medium was the biggest surprise, I though I'd just "give it a go" and ended up loving it. Not much of a "game" but a fun 7-8 hour ride with heavy influence from the PS1 survival horror era. I liked it a lot. When I sit down and think I've paid £1 for all those games (first month discount), I don't feel bad about subbing for £8.54 or whatever it is a month for my 12-month Ultimate pass.

I doubt I'll have many more months where I get this much traction out of Game Pass, but it has been a pleasant surprise so far. I've also been working my way through Forza Horizon 4, Halo MCC, Wolfenstein Old Blood and GOW remastered in the background, with the odd dash of multiplayer. Plus the F2P games like Rocket League and Fortnite... It's been a busy month! Keen to dive in to Sea of Thieves, Monster hunter World and Apex Legends, but just biding my time for now. Incredible value to be honest, and there's a lot to be said for just having a neat little box under the TV that just works as it should without needing to fiddle with settings.

Because it's nobody's business what you do with your stuff. You did it for a reason that makes sense to you and that alone is enough.

This is true. Really, what it is was that I saw a similar topic on GAF recently about someone buying a Series S and the poor dude was met almost immediately with derision so I was expecting the worst.

the S is for small pp

How dare you attack me with these harsh truths

Through some finagling during a Target sale on Game Pass cards last year I was able to get a year for $60 (three 3 month cards for $15 each, plus Microsoft was giving one free month with activation if you turned auto-renew on...so redeem a card, turn on auto renew, turn off auto renew, repeat). For that price it made sense, since I could think of at least one full price retail game I would buy within a year. I'll likely renew if I can find a similar deal when the time comes

I did download Medium to check out too but only putzed around in the first area for a while because it was late and I sleepy. If it's only 7 or 8 hours I'll probably bump it up in my queue so I can clear the storage space.

The one thing I wish the S had was a disc drive to play older Xbox games.

Well DESTROYA why not just buy a XsX ?

Because I do a majority of gaming on PC and my Switch I feel the XsX would be a waste og money to just play older Xbox games . So far I'm sitting this gen out and have zero regrets.
Glad to hear the S is a great system in itself.

It's a smart choice for you.

It's not like the market is being flooded with crazy looking pure next gen games. So the weaker hardware isn't that big of a factor right now. Emulation and great BC do their part. It's a very neat little console and a very good value proposition, especially with game pass.

Personally, I think that the Series S will struggle more and more with next gen games. Giving players the option for a 60fps mode will be a rough task for the devs on that console. I predict that the Series S will increasingly be stuck at 30fps.

Which of course, depending on the individual sensitivity to stuff like fps, image quality etc. will still be acceptable to some and not for others.

Are there any noteworthy XBox exclusives that are NOT available on PC? Because I've always felt like there's no point for me to get an Xbox when I already have a gaming PC.

Why not a series X instead? Even I think sometimes to trade my PS5 for a series X since is the only one which supports 1440p.

There's uhhhhhhhhhhh

Just a matter of availability really. If there was a series x available as well I probably would've picked that up instead (though the increased cost would've made it a harder sell for the wife).

Lol.. What.. Is it a stupid question?
I legit have zero knowledge about xBox. Even the console names confuse me. Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Xbox One series X, Xbox One Series S? ¯\(°_o)/¯

lol no I really have no idea. I'm pretty sure Halo 5 isn't on PC yet but that game is six years old and also shitty.

I'm sure there are some maybe but i couldn't tell you off the top of my head.

Xbox hasn't really found it's way out of the woods yet on exclusives, lol.

There's a grand total of 1 meaningful exclusive for next-gen Xbox, The Medium, a pretty cool but not earth shattering horror game in the classic Silent Hill style. There's also some upgrades to last-gen exclusives, with Gears 5 and Forza Horizon being two gorgeous examples.

But. Slim pickings, as much as I really enjoy the system and GamePass.

Oh, and PC will get every Xbox exclusive. Didn't see that part. Personally, I see that as a plus. Play how you like.

It seems the S makes a VERY good box for emulating older consoles for a very good price.
I might get one for that.

You know what game looked awesome to me is Scorn. I haven't really kept up on it but I thought it was supposed to be an early new gen exclusive? I could be wrong.

Yeah I don't have too much experience with retroarch in general so I'm still reading up on that, but it's great so far.

Yeah, agreed. I don't know what's going on with it, having not followed it, but I guess it's coming a little later?

Here is the thing tho. I have a good PC and can gamepass w/out a console making the PS5 the only thing I need for exclusives... Microsoft fucked up there. Not having any "console" exclusives.

Did they though? They'd still get your money for gamepass, and that's money for games you probably would have passed on completely if they stayed console-bound. Profit margins on hardware are slim to nil historically.

The Series X/S can handle PS2 emulation. Not 100% reliably at the moment but it's pretty damn impressive.
The last time I tried Onimusha on it and it worked well enough but other games had a few bugs. Does retroarch get updates or is it the same version for months now?
