Howdy, fellow hunters and fishers of D-pad! I like to consider myself an avid hunter and fisherman, and I noticed (ok, so I only did minor digging, so if someone else made an OT on this I can just cry) that there has not been an official thread to discuss these things. So, here I am! I won't say a whole lot since this is pretty self-explanatory, but this is for all my based outdoorsmen. If you do neither of those things but would like to try it out sometime, or you are just curious, this thread is still for you! The conversations can vary from the best guns/rods to use when hunting or fishing, your latest hunts, or even posting cool hunting videos you've found online.

Now, I don't like making ground rules because we are all adults here, but I DO want to make a couple of things clear:

No talks of any illegal or unethical (poaching, purposefully taking bad shots, etc.) hunting/fishing you do. You CAN, however, discuss other people you have seen do those things.

Gun talk will certainly happen here, but please, don't make it a political thing, there are other threads for that.

You can post your kills and catches but, if possible, try to hide the gore just so we don't get in trouble.

Alright, with all that out of the way, we can get to talkin'. My preferred weapon of choice when deer hunting is the classic .308. I'm not too big on shotguns or bows just because my accuracy is better with rifles, though I would like to go out of my comfort zone at some point. I mostly just hunt deer, but I am hoping to win the bear or elk raffle this year because that would definitely give me some bragging rights if I bagged either of them. I can only hope. 😩

Regardless, though, I'm curious to see all our preferences and cool hunting and fishing stories! I will post some of mine later on.

Have you gone ice fishing? I thought I might get into it because apparently it's easy to catch fish.

Despite being up north for almost 4 years now I still haven't ice fished! I was supposed to go this weekend but we're dealing with a warm spell where it's been in the high 40s (in burger numbers) So the ice has almost completely melted :/. My husband and his family have done it a lot, though, and they said it can be pretty hit-or-miss on if the fish will bite or not, but it is certainly not difficult. The biggest thing is making sure you have a shack OR a ton of layers on for it to not be a completely miserable experience.

Deer Season in Texas opens on Saturday!! I have my kit all set for a drive to South Texas to bag me a white tail. I try to get one buck a year, which provides my household with enough venison to last the year.

I cut out the backstraps and do jerky (would chicken fry them, but the wife likes the jerky), cut out the tenderloins and eat them as steaks. The rest I have ground up with 10% beef fat and we use it for tacos, enchiladas and what ever we would other wise use beef for. However its not the best for meatloaf IMO.

Bagged a 150lbs 9 point white tail buck on day 2 of the hunt! Dropped the SOB cold with a neck shot...but damn did he not want to die. He had lost what had to be a gallon of blood and was still kicking and fighting. I was about to take a shot at a nice 6 point buck that was probably ~110lbs, when this big boy came walking out.

Now I will have more than enough venison for the year and plenty to share with friends!
