Thread: How Come There Are No Classic Christmas Games?

Rock And Roll

Game Over?

Alright, American Thanksgiving is over and the Christmas season has begun. I actually had this thought back in the summer but wanted to wait until the start of the holidays to make it.

It's a simple question. When you think about it, there are countless classic Christmas forms of entertainment/media. Classic movies, classic songs/albums, classic books. Home consoles have been a major part of our lives for close to 40 years now, and there hasn't been a Christmas centered game that we all revisit each year like our favorite movies. Why has no one seriously capitalized on this? Movies/songs make an insane amount of royalties each year, in some cases it has set singers up for life with a single song. A classic Christmas game could do the same for a developer, with sales every year and being re-released every generation on new consoles. From a purely business perspective, it seems like a no brainer, especially considering there is no competition and the first game to obtain classic status would be guaranteed remain that way as it would forever be "the first".

Now, as for the game itself, I think about 3rd/4th Gen titles as an example. You could create a game that could be challenging enough on the first play through that your average player would get a few hours of enjoyment out of it. But the game itself could be completed in an hour or so with proficiency. This would be the same length as a classic Christmas movie. It could be something that players came back to every year, that the family could gather around the TV and enjoy together. Kids growing up playing this game could introduce it to their children, the way many of our parents enjoyed rewatching Christmas classics with us, as it brought them back to remembering how much they loved these movies as children.

A quick search on the eshop shows no real Christmas game, except for some puzzle games and gimmicky stupidity like Cthulhu Christmas or Santa with a gun. The closest thing to a Christmas game for me is Christmas NiGHTS, which is just the first level of NiGHTS Into Dreams reskined as a Christmas level. That's less than 10 minutes of playtime total.

So how come we haven't seen a Christmas game yet? It's been decades, games aren't going to go away, they are a form of entertainment that has become apart of our lives. It seems like it's such an obvious thing that should have happened a long time ago yet it is still a glaring omission in gaming.

Not exactly answering the question, here, but for me, games and Christmas bring back one very specific memory.

Playing Platoon on my ZX Spectum+ whilst waiting for Xmas dinner.

Since then, I can't help but relate the two (games and xmas) to that Platoon game on my speccy!

There are some outstanding Christmas themed levels in games, like Freezeezy Peak in Banjo-Kazooie, a classic. And although it wasn't intentional, the second level in Majora's Mask has a strong winter season aura to it despite all the devastation in the Mountains. Snow in games is great, but it gets old quickly I'd imagine. Good for a level then change of scenery

I'm not so sure about it getting old. I mean there are tons of games that take place in roughly the same area/environment, I don't think a game based around winter themed levels would be different.

I think the problem is we relate snow/ice level to a change in mechanics. When those show up in games, it always make the platforming or character movement slippery, so that would get old. But the game wouldn't necessarily have to be designed around that.

I have a similar story for both Mario 64 and Legend of Zelda OoT. Playing each one on Christmas day. I remember just reaching Hyrule Field as my Christmas Dinner was ready. The N64 was such a brilliant console, coming from a Megadrive 2. Gave me a disdain for 2d shite, @regawdless still hates me for today.

Yup. I had a couple games that remind me of Christmas big time. Madden 94 on the Genesis and Super Star Wars on the SNES. Played them all Xmas day.

Isn't there a Batman game set at Christmas? I've got it in my back log.

Yes Batman Returns, which I almost included in the OP. I got that game for Christmas as a kid. But beating the shit out of people as Batman doesn't really put me in the holiday spirit, although I do think it's one of the finer beat em up's that never gets mentioned from the 16 bit era. Great combat and sound effects.

Really the only thing that comes to mind is Christmas Nights Into Dreams. It's super light on content, but I would play this for hours on my Saturn.

Other than that, I just have fond memories of games I got for Christmas.

Just looked it up, it was Batman Arkham Origins I was thinking about;

The Arkham Story Begins: Batman: Arkham Origins features a pivotal tale set on Christmas Eve where Batman is hunted by eight of the deadliest assassins from the DC Comics Universe. Players become an early-career Batman as he encounters for the first time many of the characters that shape his future.

It is a really underutilized theme / environment. You'd think with the *endless* lava, ice, forest, etc. levels peppering so many games, more developers would implement settings that aren't so redundant, simply for the sake of variety and originality.

The N64 was incredible and I don't even like 2D games much. Rarely play 2D games tbh.

Maybe im mixing up indie games with 2d lol. I liked them well enough back in the day, but 3D even on a 2D plane adds alot. Civ games, Baldur's Gate and possibly Streets of Rage are the old 2d games I can still appreicate and enjoy, just as much today.

How would you sustain an entire game on a Christmas theme? There's only so much you can do in terms of story and environment. Plenty of games have Christmas themed levels, just not the whole game.

The same way most games/platformers have levels, just Christmas it up.

A forest becomes a wintery forest.
A park becomes a wintery park.
A mall becomes a decorated mall.
For a ice level, you could have a frozen lake/river.
Have a mine cart level on a toy train.
Have a racing level on Santa's sleigh

I would have loved to have a Christmas themed Ren & Stimpy game on the Sega Genesis back in the day. That could have been a classic. Idk why but they seem like the perfect protagonists to be included in that kind of game even though they're both idiots lol

You want a FULL game centered around christmas? That would overstay it's welcome. Christmas albums are less than an hour long. Christmas movies are 90min-2hours long. Video games are much longer than that. It wouldn't work. Those segments and levels other users have already mentioned are more than enough.

Shenmue [the first game] comes the closest for me. It'd be my go-to if I wanted to play a "Christmas game".

It takes place over the winter months (December to February), though depending on how long you take to progress you can stretch it into Spring. You get wintery weather in the game – it even snows. The game marks Christmas. Merry Christmas street signs go up. Shops get decorations. The in-game music changes to reflect the festive period. A Santa figure walks through the town's shopping area. Worth checking out if you haven't.

I'd be down for like a 4 hour campaign where you are a hitman who is hired to kill Santa. Basically the plot to this movie. But for the game it could be made so you make your way through his huge North Pole compound. Incorporate some MGS elements to it where you sneak around the compound and discover information as it all progresses. Make it to the toy factory and there's some boss fight. It writes itself.
