I liked TLOU, it did a lot of very good stuff. A bit too long and not perfect, but very good.

I didn't play DQ VIII.

TLOU is great the first time, but I'll never replay it since Naughty Dog's shooting mechanics are bog average and the series went stupid ever since. DQ8 is the easy pick for me since it has a great cast, plus the story and art style still hold up well without needing to be remastered and remade (needlessly).

TLOU was pretty good for what it was at the time. It's just a pity that Druckmann managed to squander it all on his indulgent meandering mess of a sequel.

I enjoyed TLOU, i bounced off DQ8. I've never really been one for turn based JRPGs, personally.

DQ8 did not grab my attention for more than a few hours. The Last of Us was an incredible adventure, especially at the time of its release.

DQ8 was such a return to form after the 7th game that was too long for its own good. Also was ugly as hell compared to 8 which was absolutely beautiful for its time and compared to previous games.

The Last Of Us is great and all but no way is it better than one of the best DQ games of all time.

I only saw the first episode and then some clips of the other episodes, but I think TLOU tv show basically replaced the game. Like, from what I've been told, the show more or less follows the game to a T, and minus the extra gay shit, I read it's pretty faithful. Now normally I'd tell anyone who says they watched a game-adaption to go play the game if they're interested, but here, I think one has simply already experienced the game through watching the show.

Yeah maybe, or maybe it could be seen the same way as having watched a movie before reading the book. That book is still gonna have way more detail, small things are different, it has room to breathe in its longer "runtime" than a movie can, etc.

Do you think TLOU 2 was even necessary? Sometimes franchises are stretched out too much, and they would have been better with just the one game.

The game was an on-rails cinematic experience with zero player agency in terms of choices you could make that could impact the outcome of the storyline, so it wasn't exactly a stretch to adapt it to Television. Albeit I'm not opposed to linear gaming narratives per se (esp if coupled with innovative gameplay), it's honestly not the best use of the medium's unique storytelling strengths compared to Books, TV or Film.

Is it as good as DQIII in some ways? Or are the two completely unique to one another?
Dragon Quest VIII is in many ways a prototype for what eventually resulted in Dragon Quest XI. Some would say XI is one of if not the best JRPG of the past decade, others say Dragon Quest VIII is still the better game.

I say VIII should be remade with XIs graphics and Qol and released on multiplatform so more people can experience it. XI, and now HD-2D Trilogy of III, then soon II and I is a good start. I expect HD-2D Trilogy of IV, V, VI and remakes of VII, VIII and XI over next 10 years.

Also a fucking reveal for XII and release. Just improve on XIs amazing foundation, add job rotations and dont make it grim dark shit please.

I completely agree. Dragon Quest Builders 1 was a great game that took inspiration from the first Dragon Quest game. DQB2 added some random good guy being villain all along trope that had nothing to do with DQ2.

Dragon Quest games don't need to be dark. Final Fantasy is dark already.
