Damn that's a big one. I could flip a coin, but I'll go with Stardew Valley.

(unless it becomes funny to change the vote later to piss someone off)

The fact that I played stardew a bunch around release and then played a bunch more co-op with family recently
Vs
I do really like crpg's but at time of DA release was most likely trying to push people to go play fallout2 instead. Also the DLC crap in the campground was the start of that garbage

I'll go with DA:O . Had a lot of fun with that game at the time. Always heard good things about Starview, but it's just never appealed to me on the whole.

Dragon Age Origins was amazing, still holds up now. A entire slightly Warhammer Fantasy/Song of Ice and Fire derived universe with a cool 2000s edgy yet at times romantic rpg spin. 2000s Era Bioware knew how to work with world building and lore/codex's, just like Mass Effect 1 going for retro 70s sci-fi asthetics and story in vein of Star Trek the Original Series, with elements of Babylon 5 and a bit of Battlestar Galactica/Homeworld for the Qurians.

An absolute shame the sequels were increasing magnitudes of garbage.

A faithful Remake of Origins would be a dream game for me unfortunately I will never trust the things wearing Biowares skin since EA bought them out to do it right.

DAO did not click with me, and I bought it at release. Stardew Valley by comparison really hooked me. Stardew is the kind of game that is just layers upon layers of secrets and random happenings that truly make the game feel alive and breathing. You can trigger stuff to happen without having any idea you had anything to do with it or without having any idea why it happened -- maybe it just happened. And that thing might never happen again. All of the NPCs are fairly deep and worth getting to know.

Of course, the gameplay loop has to be your cup of tea in order to really love Stardew Valley, and for some, myself included, the farming is just sort of something that can stress you out or make things feel incredibly repetitive. You need to farm in order to live though. There's only so many hours in a day. Days feel fleetingly short, and there's so much for you to do and to explore. What will you prioritize? Decision fatigue is real.

I've never understood the appeal of dragons being the center of a game. I'm playing one right now, a game that has an evil dragon clan as the main set of aggressors for everything that has gone wrong in the land. It's just so generic and played out imo. Large winged creature, fire breathing, greedy, powerful, evil. Dragons seem to be a placeholder for incompetent storytellers in the gaming industry more times than not

Developer: Everything is good so far sir, everything except the story. It turned out we had to scrap the entire story, unfortunately. What do you suppose is our next step?

Executive: That's unacceptable, but what's done is done. What we're going to do is we're going to throw a fucking dragon in there bro, it's fool proof trust me. We'll get this project back on track

Like seriously man, are dragons just the industry standard plan B for when developers fuck up and fail to create a compelling story? I can't even imagine actually telling myself the goal is to sit my ass down and start writing a story about a dragon. It's like a writer's version of counting fucking sand bro...

Dragons are great for a boss or maybe even two, but there's something about using dragons to drive an entire story that irks me. Am I the only one who thinks dragon games are the ultimate cliche? There's hardly any appeal to them imo, outside of them being a singular mighty foe every time. A man or even a crew versus a dragon will always be a very serious and grave battle. But still, the use of a dragon as the main villain in a video game seems like such a poor choice. It basically screams at the player that the game will have a limited amount of original content, if hardly any. The adventure itself with how the humans respond can be epic and completely original but at the end it'll always be a this is it guys, let's go slay this fucking dragon this massive powerful enchanted beast that's just there and in our way of peace

....It's just a massive magical flying slab of meat that kills morale and disrupts peace. Every time bro

Giving players at least one or two dragons to slay was already a staple in Black Isle/Bioware RPGs, and in most other D&D style RPGs

I tried Stardew Valley but it feels like a mobile game. Nothing really caught my interest. Harvestella is the same concept but that plays like a real game.

For some reason, I always assumed that DQ was named in honor of Dragon Ball but never had anything to do with dragons. I'm hoping they don't use a Dragon as the main villain for more than two games tbh. Either way, I hear nothing but great things about DQ but it will be disappointing to learn that the series centers around different dragon villains each time there's a new game

Stardew Valley will still have a chance to come back though. Next week there will be a last chance thread, where the top 20 losers from Round 2 will have a chance to come back. The Top 7 will join the winners of this round. Then we'll move on to Round 3 and eventually a final winner.
