I keep trying to explain personal servers to some friends and family to let them know I'd like to share my media with them for movies, music, etc. Most of the time they look at me like I'm crazy and have no idea what I'm remotely referring to.

They're like, don't worry I sub to Disney, Netflix, Amazon, YouTube tv, Max, Paramount, Hulu, peacock, and Apple TV. I'm good. I don't feel like making some plex account just to watch movies.

Ffs.

Adverts for basic Netflix tiers, 720p streams for "unauthorised" hardware configurations and selling of your data to third parties.

I've changed the thread title slightly to better reflect the media angle, and also added this into the OP;

What is the advantage of hosting my own data?
In nearly all cases content can be acquired that either matches or exceeds what can be bought from official sources. Also content can be obtained that matches your personal needs better i.e languages, file sizes and is not limited by artificial geographical barriers. Owning your own data no longer puts you at the mercy of companies who will sell your data, make amendments for modern sensibilities or remove your media completely when licences expire. Digital media is not susceptible to bit rot or scratches either (though should always be backed up as best practice).
