Halo developer 343 reportedly loses engine lead

Just days after founder Bonnie Ross departs.

343 Industries, the developer behind Xbox's blockbuster Halo series, has reportedly lost another high-profile figure.

David Berger, who served as lead developer on Infinite's ambitious Slipspace Engine technology, will leave the studio - according to reports by Windows Central and Lords of Gaming.

News of the departure comes just days after 343's boss Bonnie Ross announced her own exit from the company after 15 years, to attend to a family medical issue.

There's no word yet on why Berger is leaving. Eurogamer has contacted Microsoft for more.

In the wake of Ross' departure, Windows Central has reported on something of a reshuffle at 343, with production lead Pierre Hinze becoming studio head.

Additionally, two new leadership related roles have been created: general manager of franchise, which will be filled by Bryan Koski, and head of business and operations, announced as Elizabeth Van Wyck.

Halo Infinite live service remains in production despite various delays, with former Destiny developer Joeseph Staten still serving as its creative director.

Not a good situation for a flagship series developer... I wonder where he will end up.

It's disappointing that it had to come of this. I thought Infinite had a very strong foundation to build upon.

I agree. They nailed the gameplay so I was willing to be patient with the lack of content on launch but fast forward 10 months and only 2 seasons, canceled split screen, and delayed season 3.

I put it down after maxing out the first battle pass.

Who cares. Shut them down, they're fuckin garbage. They had plenty of chances to make things right. But they're just incompetent af and should choose a new career.
Another imbecile and utterly juvenile statement, by someone who would happily see an entire industry crash and burn, with the inevitable wreckage of massive unemployment, bankruptcy and forestaling of game development, just so his petty vindictive thesis would be proven right.

Keep the pathetic comments coming.

Seconded. Unreal seems to be a jack of all trades engine and very customizable.

Also, give Halo to ID.

I'm completely against consolidation and tired of everyone relying on the same engines - everything winds up feeling way too similar - so I'm not fond of either idea. I can criticize 343i for a lot of things, but developing their own engine isn't one of them. I wish more studios took that into their own hands.

They pretty much 6 years to release an incomplete game with little maps, no coop, and no forge. Besides the gameplay, there's nothing else to praise.

But keep the insults going. Literally offered nothing to the discussion but dumbass insults.

I agree with your point of view, if said engine wasn't a turd. Since 343 is incompetent maybe using a proven engine could be good for them.

Should have used unreal. I think they could have captured movement with passionate people leading the charge.
