So I saw a videogame documentary named Highscore on Netflix and started watching.

It started okay at first, had some cringe animations but it was tolerable.

Than they had a trans person come on to express how videogames allowed them to be their proper gender, was fucking stupid and obviously shoehorned in.

Than it was okay again for a bit, but suddenly they have this black family on talking about how their dad/grandpa was a big black man, and without and evidence kept talking about how it must of been hard for a big black man to work with all those white people, stopped watching at this point.

Read some spoilers for future episodes where they talk about gay RPG characters and that lesbian walking simulator and lost any interest in any future episode

So what are some good Videogame documentaries to get this shitty taste out of my mouth?

Xbox ET one is good.

I don't like DOTA but the one Valve did about Dota was interesting.

Indie game the movie

Double Fine adventure is a good insight into game making

No Clip on YouTube is good, I liked them better before COVID though, when they went on location.

Just wanted to pop back in and say, Highscore on Netflix sucks ass. It's random asides about gay people and other stuff that are only tangentially related to a game or genre they're covering is fucking annoying.

I tried to watch it. Turned off after about ten minutes.

All these game documentaries have one thing in common that bothers me, I hate how they show old game as if they were running on emulators with a clean image, makes them look way worse than they actually are.

Geoff "Dorito Pope" Keighley's Portal 2 Final Hours was pretty good:

I also enjoyed Indie Game: The Movie even if Phil Fish was insufferable about Fez 2.

Yeah i shouted fuck off at the TV watching that shit, absolute propaganda masquerading as a documentary about videogames.

Second what people have said about 'king of kong' being a great documentary , also i remember 'video games the movie' being watchable and also indie games movie mentioned too.

Check out Atari game over, chasing ghosts beyond the arcade and 100 yen.

Another doc i watched recently that although not games related was totally ace was 'the pez outlaw' - fascinating story

I'll add more as my old brain remembers them

Karl Jobst makes great documentaries about drama, speedrunning and gaming in general. You can find him on youtube. I watched almost all of his videos and they are top notch and give great insight into individual communities that the videos talk about (Minecraft, Zelda, DOOM etc.)

These console launch videos are pretty damn good (the link is for a playlist but starts with the first one):

And I really enjoyed this one recently:

Albeit Youtube and Danny O'dwyer who often being a bit of a tool on Twitter. I definitely do recommend the No Clip Gaming Documentaries which are really well done and getting into the weeds of game development

Well worth a sub.
