Nintendo has just dropped a bombshell during today's Direct presentation - that N64 James Bond classic GoldenEye 007 will launch for the service with online multiplayer.

Original developer Rare has simultaneously confirmed an updated version for Xbox consoles, which will launch on Xbox Game Pass.

The Xbox version will include achievements, 4K resolution and a smoother framerate.

UPDATE 5.17pm: It's been confirmed that GoldenEye 007's beloved multiplayer modes will only support online play in the upcoming Switch re-release - with Xbox missing out.

That's according to the official James Bond website, which wrote, "Exclusive to the new Switch version of the 1997 title will be online play, allowing 007 fans across the world to take part in the popular four person multiplayer mode together."

Other N64 games to have gained official online multiplayer support via Nintendo's Switch Online emulation include Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, and Sin and Punishment.

With the online part could it just be misinterpreted wording? Like Switch version onwards will have online exclusive to this port (which will also release on XBOX).

If not its maybe a bone that was thrown to Nintendo to allow this release at all.

A game created by a studio owned by Microsoft is not shipping with online play for Microsoft?

It's just embarrassment after embarrassment.

And people Are so sure that Microsoft will make their TES games exclusive? At this rate TES 6 will have a VR mode exclusive to PlayStation.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised, even if just as a console exclusive, given how well Skyrim VR did. Xbox buying up studios to get the worst versions of their games would be hilarious.

There's an argument to be made where Microsoft reap the rewards of revenue, but ignoring VR this late in the game is stupid. They've handed VR exclusivity to Sony and any versions that come with VR are automatically exclusive to Sony.

And yeah I'm just waiting for Skyrim VR to his PSVR2 for ultimate lulz

According to Era the only reason the Switch version has online is that online support is baked in the emulator for all multiplayer releases. Sounds like this is just a bare minimum release.

I'm gonna guess this is down to how Nintendo created the emulator for switch to have online play. The game was probably never made with online in mind but they are able to simply because of the layer they already created.

Sounds like Switch is getting a shitty N64 rom while Xbox will have remastered version from XBLA.

It looks like its just the N64 version for now

What an absolute fuck up at every possible opportunity. From the outside it appears to be so much mismanagement its almost comical.

"Lets hold onto the extensive remake we made, release the rom but oh yeah make multiplayer exclusive and PC players can go get fucked"

Wankers.

Goldeneye deserves better than this bare bones release.

I wonder if MS has a remaster up its sleeve.

To me this more seems like a Nintendo project and MS is just getting thrown a bone and they can't be arsed to do anything with it. They got Activision mergers and COD to worry about. Some 30 year old game is old news, just throw it on Rare replay and whatever bro.

I mean, PC players already have the remake sans-multiplayer.

But yeah, even Graslu isn't excited.
